Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

This light and airy cottage is only one block to the beach. Each of the two bedrooms has its own private bath. One bedroom has a double bed, the other a queen bed. There is also a twin trundle bed on the sun room, which provides sleeping space for two. The sun room has a half bath and a door for privacy. It also serves as a sunny dining room and a sitting room. The screen porch has a dining area, comfortable sling chairs and a relaxing hammock, with room for two. The second story sundeck offers peeks at the ocean. It is a great spot to enjoy your morning coffee, a relaxing meal, reading or sunbathing in the Adirondack chairs or evening stargazing. Because the yard is shaded by a giant ancient cedar and many live oaks, the house and yard feel very private. The private outdoor shower has both hot and cold water. The back yard is fenced to protect children and pets.

The uncrowded beach is a magnet for local surfers and is also great for boogie boarding. You can swim, sail and kayak in the ocean or go out in the creeks canoeing, kayaking, fishing and crabbing. There are several great restaurants on the island and even more in Mt. Pleasant, Sullivan's Island and Charleston. The Shops of Mount Pleasant and King's Street in Charleston offer wonderful shopping opportunities. Downtown Charleston offers Historic Houses, theater and The Gibbes Museum. There is something for everyone!

About Mary Maclachlan

Our love of nature and the coast keeps us coming back to the Isle of Palms. We enjoy watching the birds and butterflies in our yard and the shore birds on the ocean and in the creeks. Our children now return here for visits from their present homes in Austin, Texas, Sacramento, California and Bologna, Italy. Mary and Morgan Maclachlan

Mary Maclachlan purchased this house in 1981

Why Mary Maclachlan chose Charleston Area

When we moved to South Carolina in 1972 we came to the Isle of Palms as often as we could. We enjoyed the family friendly beach and the fact that it was less than 30 minutes to the beautiful, historic city of Charleston. When we had a chance to buy a cottage here in 1981 we jumped at the chance. We chose our house because it had a high lot with beautiful cedar trees. Only one ancient cedar tree survived Hurricane Hugo in 1989. The water came within a foot of our house, but the house and our newly built deck survived.

What makes this house unique

We love walking on the beach in the morning with our border collie Livvy. She can run off lead until 9:00 am and until 10:00 am in the winter months. It is amazing how much fun the dogs and their people have during this time. We like to go to the Charleston County Park, just up highway 17 and to the Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge, a little further up highway 17 in Awendaw. Most of all we just like hanging out with family and friends in this beautiful place.

Great beach cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I enjoyed five relaxing days in this comfortable cottage nestled among shady trees. We had all the comforts of home just a block from the beach where we spent much of each day walking, swimming, & wave riding. The rooms were large & airy - plenty of sitting areas inside & out - even an open air dining deck above the screened porch. Great a/c when needed & the weather was so mild we opened windows for evening breezes. The kitchen was fully equipped & we enjoyed many meals at home as well as at area restaurants. The thirty minute drive into Charleston for Spoleto events was easy to navigate. We don't have a pet but the cottage accommodates pets and we saw no evidence of insects or chemical odors. Everything was clean & well maintained. We will return & recommend this cottage to our friends.

This property is well-maintained and super close to the beach. It's also dog friendly, which we appreciate.

Great location but needs updating and deep cleaning

  • 2 of 5

The location of this property makes it ideal. It is just a 5 minute walk to the beach. It is also nice that they allow pets. The property is dated (you can see some of this in the pictures), and it is in dire need of a deep cleaning and some things being updated or thrown away. The furniture in the living room is not very comfortable to relax in (it is whicker furniture with patio cushions). The patio furniture outside is very dirty that we didn't feel comfortable sitting on it. There were used, old bars of soaps in the bathrooms (I feel these should be thrown away as you don't know who has used it where). While the owner welcomes guests to leave unexpired food behind, some of the items there are questionable and covered with dust and grime. The scrub brush left in the kitchen was very dirty that we didn't use it to clean with, and the tools to cook with are old and worn. We never cooked in the kitchen because of this. The owner invites guests to self-clean and receive a good portion of their deposit back. While this is enticing (we took advantage of it), I think the property needs to be professionally deep cleaned (it's very dirty under nightstands and behind chairs for example). You have to bring your own towels and sheets, but we are glad we did this as I am not sure when the bed covers on beds and pillows that are on the day bed were last washed. It may just be that they are old and worn, but there were some stains on some of them. We killed 5 cockroaches while there and had other bugs crawling on us. It is important to know that the owner requests payment via check by mail. You do not have the VRBO guarantee since payment is not made online through VRBO.com. The owner was pleasant in all our interactions, however.

Owner's Response: The house is mainly cleaned by a professional between guests with some exceptions. The house also is regularly treated for bugs. If you had a problem with the cleanliness or with bugs I wish you had contacted us. We would have tried to fix the problem. We are so sorry the house did not meet your expectations. We would like to add that probably 1/3 of our guests are returning for the second, third or more time. in fact one family has come every summer since 1988. Sorry the house was not a good fit for you. Beach Gem at IOP

  • 4 of 5

My husband, our two dogs, and I had a wonderful time at IOP. This little home was a short walk to the beautiful beach at IOP, where our furry friends ran their hearts out. The location of this cottage is superior. The neighborhood is perfect for riding bikes and walking the dogs. The location is also close to our two favorite restaurants, Long Island Cafe and Sea Biscuits Cafe. And the drive to Charleston is not too far. We loved enjoying our coffee and wine in the fenced in backyard with the dogs. The house appears to have been freshly painted on the outside.

The kitchen is small but adequate, the 2 1/2 bathrooms are wonderful, and the sun room is fabulous! For the price, it is a little piece of heaven. The beds could be improved.
