About the Property
House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8)
The Martin House was constructed in 2 phases by my aunt & uncle. The original portion was built in 1953 & the portion which completes the house’s “L shape” & the laundry room & the pantry were added on in 1975, just prior to my uncle retiring from teaching at Columbia University. It is located within the city of Roxboro, NC---it’s an easy 10 minute walk on Main Street to the downtown area, where there are churches, post office, realtors, sports bars, restaurants, bank, courthouse, museum, drug stores, clothing stores, etc.
It has a large groomed yard w/ big, beautiful trees & rock boulders nestled all around. Amazingly enough, you'll still see from time-to-time deer, groundhogs, foxes, cutting thru the yard. Plus, there are lots of birds always chirping away. My wife says the side yard is sorta a protective sanctuary for the birds & that's why there are so many birds around during warmer weather.
The exterior of the house is cedar. The interior has pine walls, floors, beams, ceilings, & some cedar closets. There are 4 bedrooms: 2 downstairs (king bed, queen bed, & a twin) & 2 upstairs (queen bed in one & a twin in the other); There are 3 full baths, 2 downstairs & 1 upstairs; full heat & air; 6 ceiling fans; fireplace with wood stove insert; fully furnished including full kitchen & kitchenware, microwave, refrigerator, washer & dryer, bed linens & towels, wireless hi-speed internet, cable TV, 2 color TVs, VCR/DVD player, gas grill, charcoal grill.
In addition to being walking distance to all that is downtown, you're also close to many other food & entertainment establishments: 10 minutes to 3 grocery store chains; 10 minutes to locally owned & operated Steak, Italian, Mexican, & Seafood restaurants; 5 minutes to the normal fast food chains; 15 minutes to Roxboro Country Club to play golf; 10 minutes to Palace Pointe Family Entertainment (all under one roof) including 20 bowling lanes, 8 movie theatres, 7 billiards tables, rollerskating, video arcade, & food diner; 15 minutes to Mayo Lake Park including free boat launch, outdoor amphitheatre (with bands, movies, & plays), swimming, fishing, sunning, kayak & canoe rentals, walking trails, wildlife viewing deck, & playground; 30 minutes to Durham Bulls minor league baseball game (affordable family fun); 30 minutes to DPAC--the new Durham Performing Arts Center; 30 minutes to VIR (one of the finest LeMans-type road race courses in the world, pro & amateur sports car racing, motorcycle racing, driving schools, Paul Newman loved VIR); plantation tours, museums, & antique shops all within an hour's drive; 30 minutes to Orange County Speedway & South Boston Motor Speedway; 1.5 hours to Martinsville Nascar Motor Speedway; 60 minutes to RDU airport; 50 minutes to UNC at Chapel Hill; 30 minutes to Durham to Duke University & Duke Hospital; 70 minutes to Raleigh to NC State University, Carolina Hurricanes Hockey, CASL Soccer Complex, & RBC Center; 70 minutes to Cary, NC, to USA Baseball National Training Complex & WakeMed Soccer Park/Stadium. It's an all wood, "cabiny", comfortable house, most of which is all on ground level, with a lot to do nearby---hope y'all come. Sincerely, Arch & Kathy.

About the owner: My aunt & uncle were both raised in small, rural communities in North Carolina. Even though they tended to be "intellectuals", they were as humble, as down-to-earth, as caring of others, as they could be. My uncle taught at Amherst College (where the plans for this house came from), Columbia University, & after retirement, at Wake Forest University. When they passed on, even though we were not sure we could afford it, we could not let this house get out of the family. All those memories--- the Monopoly games that went on for days, all those school projects my aunt helped me with, my aunt's chocolate cake, her coffee she let us sip, the lingering conversations around their dining room table, my aunt's hand-made Christmas decorations depicting winter scenes from their Amherst, Massachusetts’ days, on & on the memories flooded my mind. Thankfully, it has all worked out nicely for Kathy & me to become the stewards of this property. Hope you will give it a try!!!
