About Oleg De-Vreeze

We have lived in downtown Montreal for 20 years and enjoy every second of it. Our house is on a quiet, tree-lined street, and at the same time right in the middle of all that downtown living offers: easy transportation, universities, shopping, nightlife, museums - it's all at our doorstep. We keep on profiting from the immediate access to entertainment, education, and transportation. Can life get any better.

Oleg De-Vreeze purchased this apartment in 1994

Why Oleg De-Vreeze chose Montreal

We inherited a four-plex house in the downtown area and decided to convert two of the apartments into a vacation rental.

What makes this apartment unique

Everything is provided - sheets, towels, soap, shampoo, BBQ, washer-dryer, etc.- just bring your toothbrush. Private parking, cable TV and high speed internet is included.

Great place enjoyed by all.

Oleg and his family were like extended family to mine. Their place has more characteristics and charms than any places we stayed in

Great location...2 blocks from the metro! Restaurants, pubs & stores a short walk away. The unit was great...very spacious & clean. Room for 6 is nice when there are only 2 staying! Kitchen was well equipped with everything needed. All in all a great vacation! Thanks Oleg & Luda!

This was our family's second stay in the apartment on Souvenir in two years. The location is fine, and neighbourhood seems safe.

Our second - and last - stay was ruined by a series of events which the owners did not prepare for nor handle effectively. The row house immediately adjacent is undergoing a major addition - I'm talking huge. During our stay, we were: 1) awoken by construction workers smoking on our private deck. Since there are no curtains in the apartment (which is puzzling in and of itself), and the kitchen has huge windows looking on the deck, we had no privacy during our stay. If you plan on staying here during fall 2012, expect the same. 2) Blocked in the driveway by contractors' trucks on multiple occasions. There is a large crew working and they need to park in the parking lane. 3) Forced to clear furniture off the deck, which had been piled in front of the fire escape, posing a clear hazzard.

We dealt with these issues ourselves as the owners were too far faway to help right away. On the second morning, one of the owners came to our house unannounced to check if there were any other problems. Kind of not how you want to start your days while on vacation.

If you stayed here before, you may want to reconsider staying again. The neighbour's addition includes two floor to ceiling windows that look directly onto the deck (and into your kitchen).

The interior is dated but it is clean. Adding some curtains or blinds on the front bedroom windows and kitchen would add much needed privacy. I would say it's suitable as a vacation rental for students, groups of friends, or families looking for an affordable option.

Owner's Response: We sincerely regret the inconvenience to our guests. Our understanding with our neighbours was that there would be no work done on Saturdays and it is illegal to do construction work on Sundays. Unfortunately, that they decided to go ahead and work was beyond our control. On that Sunday we stopped them before 8.a.m. and have lodged a complaint with with the Permit Bureau. The construction on our side is complete and our guests can again enjoy complete privacy.

All the comforts of home

Based on pictures, reviews and proximity to lots of Montreal's highlights, we booked the 2nd floor apartment for our first trip to Montreal to visit our son, his wife and our new grandbaby. The neighborhood is quiet, and within walking distance to a huge farmer's market, public transportation, and lots of little hidden gems. It was great having a kitchen (partially stocked!). We made breakfast every morning and made dinner for the kids several times. Oleg and Luda are delightful. I would definitely recommend, and would stay here again if/when we return to Montreal.

Not as expected

  • 2 of 5

We rented this place based on the good reviews. I don't know why the reviews were that good. The place is spacious, as described by others, but it is in need of care and is not easily accessible from street level due to a steep, wooden-step entry stairway. Oleg, one of the owners, is a nice, helpful person, and we were sorry to arrive on the afternoon when Canadians celebrate their Thanksgiving. Nevertheless, there are some things that the owners could do to enhance the unit, as follows: clean and organize the basement where the washer and dryer are located; add a light under the kitchen cabinets so one can see better in the cooking area which is quite dark; add an air exhaust fan in the kitchen; trim the weeds in the very inconvenient spiral stairway that leads to the washing/drying area in the basement. The area around the unit did not seem very clean, with many ruptured plastic garbage bags strewn on the sidewalk. The dishwasher is located at an angle to the kitchen's sink, and is in the way when its door is open. Parking is available in an unpaved parking spot in the back of the unit, but one must walk around the block to get to it, or use the steep, narrow spiral stairway in the back. This is not an easy way to carry one's luggage up and down. I would not recommend this place at the present time.

The very definition of a pied-a-terre

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for four nights in late March, 2012. The managers Oleg and Luda are top-notch and very communicative. The apartment is on a quiet street that joins Ave Atwater just short of the top of the steep rise between Metro Lionel-Groulx and Metro Atwater. Five minutes' walk to both stops. Parking space in the back.

The apartment has wood floors and ample lighting in the large common area (which also includes 4-6 person dining table, sofa, two lounge chairs, and TV). One bedroom has a twin bed and dresser, the other a queen bed, dresser, and large closet. The (admittedly, not-very-well-lit) kitchen includes a large refrigerator/freezer (no ice-maker, so buy ice to get you started and use the trays), four-burner electric stove, electric oven, and microwave. A door from the kitchen opens to the back balcony, which includes a gas grill (with thin grates; use an indirect fire and watch closely if you are cooking to temperature). The kitchen is well-equipped, with plenty of glassware (including two sizes of wine glasses), plates, and silverware. Bring a sharp knife if you wish to do any serious cooking; the risk of theft is too high for rental property managers to want to stock apartments with steal-worthy knives.

And what a city to cook in! The Marche Atwater is ten minutes walk down the hill (with the 108 bus available to bring you back up if you are encumbered). The Marche includes numerous useful boucheries, with St.-Vincent the nicest (and most expensive). Pates & Terrines is the best charcuterie and does an excellent tourtiere (pork pie). Fruiterie Atwater, on the lower level, is not cheap, but has some hard-to-find-in-Montreal items, including exotic mushrooms and parsley root. Across a small side street from the Marche is an excellent supermarket and pharmacy, and one of the "Terroirs d'Ici" branches of the SAQ wine and liquor store. This SAQ has an excellent selection of ciders and other Quebecois products, and a very good selection of geeky French wines that goes well beyond Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Up the hill on Atwater (at St.-Catherine) is a mall with normal stores and an IGA supermarket that is slightly more upscale than the Super C near the Marche. Many buses (especially all-night buses) terminate here, at Atwater station, which means the apartment is well placed for returning form late nights at Dieu du Ciel or some of the other excellent brewpubs.

I would definitely stay here again. The managers, location, and facilities were all excellent.
