House, 7 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 13)

Jamestown, Rhode Island is New England's best kept secret. And what better way to discover it than with another family (or two) in our spacious, bright, Victorian home. The house sits on a high bank over a large front lawn, ideal for badminton or croquet. From the spacious covered front porch you can sit in comfort and watch the panorama of Narragansett Bay: the colorful spinnakers of regatta sailboats racing down wind, the towering sails of the 12 meter boats from bygone America’s Cup races, and ferries on their way to Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard. In front of you is the quaint Conanicut Marina, and the main street of Jamestown village is a mere block away. A mile north, the Newport Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in New England, soars over the bay, glittering lights at night, connecting Jamestown to historic Newport with its famed colonial architecture and turn-of-the-century mansions.

A short walk from the small-town charm of Jamestown’s shops, galleries, excellent restaurants (including a fantastic brick oven bakery,) children's playground, and local library, the house’s location also provides an easy drive to the public beach, a local glass blower's shop (and demonstrations), and even watercolor lessons at nearby Watson's Farm. Or you can leave your car behind and catch the ferry to historic Newport from the village.

This middle house of the historic “Three Sisters” Victorian-style homes is ideal for a two or three-family shared vacation or a family reunion. With easy access to the village, tweens and teenagers alike can be independent, leaving you to luxuriate on the front porch. And with a protected, large front lawn, the younger children can run amok while staying in view.

About Owner

I live in South Orange, New Jersey with my husband and two children. I work as a film and photo researcher. I own the home in Jamestown, RI with my two sisters and brother.

Owner purchased this House in 1960

Why Owner chose Jamestown

My parents bought this three story 'cottage' in 1960. They were visiting old family friends, had no intention of buying anything there, but fell in love with the island and found the perfect house. While the island has been discovered for its natural beauty on Narragansett Bay and close proximity to historic Newport, it still maintains a wonderful small town feel. While there are wonderful restaurants, beautiful walks, excellent shops and recreation, there is never a sense of crowding. Local residents are friendly and happy to share the island's fascinating history with all comers.

What makes this House unique

A wonderfully spacious, light, airy house that feels cozy like a home; a front porch that you may never want to leave; a 3 minute walk to shops, restaurants, and boats (and ferry to Newport.) Plus an enclosed outdoor shower for those who like to stay under the stars!

Lovely old summer house with a view to die for

                                                      Elizabeth T.Salem, Massachusetts USA

This stay was a success from beginning to end. The house was gracious -- and spacious. Well appointed with everything you would want (copious and very pretty china!). Comfortable, well placed furniture lends relaxing atmosphere; good reading light (sometimes rare in summer houses).Very clean. Large front porch with harbor views, including the graceful bridge to Newport with fairytale necklace lights at night. There were four of us on a girls' weekend, but would be great for multigenerational reunions. Owner was very pleasant, accommodating, and available for questions throughout; she answered within minutes, it seemed. All of us found it even prettier than the photos. Conanticut Island (and town of Jamestown) itself is a treasure, small enough to explore by bike, with lovely houses and great sea views.

Thanks for the unsolicited review, Elizabeth. We're delighted you loved the house and island as much as we do. Thanks for being such good guests. Come back anytime. Libby

Great location and Feels like Home

                                                      Susan P.Barnegat, NJ USA

A group of friends from college stayed for 4 nights and had a lot of fun. Hurricane Jose put somewhat of a damper on activities, like enjoying the spacious porch, but we enjoyed ourselves. The house is a great location for visiting Newport, and though the ferry wasn't running due to the storm, it and restaurants were well within walking distance. One thing we'd like to suggest for the future is to install some showers with the bathtubs, as 7 women made using the shower daily a bit difficult. Otherwise, we really loved the house.

                                                      Sublime time at Middle Sister

                                                      Anne H.Jamestown, Rhode Island

My family had a fantastic weekend at the Middle Sister- a group of cousins enjoyed staying at the Middle Sister while attending our daughter's wedding in Jamestown. Everyone loved hanging out and catching up with family while sitting on the porch overlooking the harbor, walking half a block to get the best lobster rolls, taking the ferry to Newport, checking out all the cool Jamestown shops and restaurants- and attending an awesome family and friends focused wedding- so much to fit into one weekend!!! The Middle Sister was the perfect anchor for all activities and respite for recharging!! Thanks so much!!!

                                                      Inviting House, Amazing Location

                                                      Christine D.

We rented this house for a week during the summer as a "gathering place" for my family, which is scattered up and down the East Coast. The house was PERFECT. Lots of rooms for when folks wanted their privacy, and inviting open spaces where we could all gather and hang out.

And that deck! Can't beat it!

You can walk to just about everything from the house ... cute shops, great reataurants, ice cream, even the grocery store isn't that far (take one of the bikes!).

Days can be spent hanging at the house (croquet, anyone?), walking around town (homemade bagels!), taking the ferry (which you can walk to) to Newport, exploring Beavertail (those sunsets!), or relaxing on one of the beaches a short drive away.

The kitchen is small, but very well equipped; and the washer and dryer are huge ... so you can always have clean beach towels :-).

All-in-all it is a great house and I look forward to renting it again!

                                                      Sorren V.Fajardo, Puerto Rico

This house was ideal for our family reunion. We were in town for a wedding with 11 adults and two kids! The kids had a blast playing in the front yard! Walking distance to the shops in town and all the restaurants!

                                                      Owner's Response:

Thanks Sorren, for enjoying our somewhat tattered but charming house. Jamestown is a special place for sure.

Ideal Location for our multi generational "Girls" Weekend

                                                      JEANETTE B.

A group of friends/extended family traveling to the area for the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival, found this to be an ideal location. Easy walking distance to the Jamestown-Newport Ferry. Easy walking distance to our favorite local restaurants: Jamestown FiSH and Slice of Heaven. Pictures almost capture the charm of this Victorian Mansion, but cannot really convey the joy of sitting with a cup of tea or glass of wine on the lovely porch overlooking the harbour and Pell Bridge. Sunrise & Sunset were both spectacular. Jazz music played briefly from next door added to the ambience and the neighbors were also very friendly. Although our numbers did not justify such a large house it will be very hard to not book this lovely home again next year or on other visits to Jamestown. I hope to return soon to the Middle Sister with more time to relax and enjoy the property. As well as return to spend more time on the Patio at Jamestown FiSH enjoying something bubbly by the Fire-pit or in the Dining room enjoying the fabulously prepared local seafood and produce. Thank you Libby! Thank you FiSH! Thank you Newport Mansions Preservation Society!
