Spacious Ocean View Victorian in Rhode Island

Bedrooms 7
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 7 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 13)

Jamestown, Rhode Island is New England's best kept secret. And what better way to discover it than with another family (or two) in our spacious, bright, Victorian home. The house sits on a high bank over a large front lawn, ideal for badminton or croquet. From the spacious covered front porch you can sit in comfort and watch the panorama of Narragansett Bay: the colorful spinnakers of regatta sailboats racing down wind, the towering sails of the 12 meter boats from bygone America’s Cup races, and ferries on their way to Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard. In front of you is the quaint Conanicut Marina, and the main street of Jamestown village is a mere block away. A mile north, the Newport Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in New England, soars over the bay, glittering lights at night, connecting Jamestown to historic Newport with its famed colonial architecture and turn-of-the-century mansions.

A short walk from the small-town charm of Jamestown’s shops, galleries, excellent restaurants (including a fantastic brick oven bakery,) children's playground, and local library, the house’s location also provides an easy drive to the public beach, a local glass blower's shop (and demonstrations), and even watercolor lessons at nearby Watson's Farm. Or you can leave your car behind and catch the ferry to historic Newport from the village.

This middle house of the historic “Three Sisters” Victorian-style homes is ideal for a two or three-family shared vacation or a family reunion. With easy access to the village, tweens and teenagers alike can be independent, leaving you to luxuriate on the front porch. And with a protected, large front lawn, the younger children can run amok while staying in view.

About The Owner

I live in South Orange, New Jersey with my husband and two children. I work as a film and photo researcher. I own the home in Jamestown, RI with my two sisters and brother.

The Owner purchased this house in 1960

Why The Owner chose Jamestown

My parents bought this three story 'cottage' in 1960. They were visiting old family friends, had no intention of buying anything there, but fell in love with the island and found the perfect house. While the island has been discovered for its natural beauty on Narragansett Bay and close proximity to historic Newport, it still maintains a wonderful small town feel. While there are wonderful restaurants, beautiful walks, excellent shops and recreation, there is never a sense of crowding. Local residents are friendly and happy to share the island's fascinating history with all comers.

What makes this house unique

A wonderfully spacious, light, airy house that feels cozy like a home; a front porch that you may never want to leave; a 3 minute walk to shops, restaurants, and boats (and ferry to Newport.) Plus an enclosed outdoor shower for those who like to stay under the stars!

Lovely old summer house with a view to die for

  • 5 of 5

This stay was a success from beginning to end. The house was gracious -- and spacious. Well appointed with everything you would want (copious and very pretty china!). Comfortable, well placed furniture lends relaxing atmosphere; good reading light (sometimes rare in summer houses).Very clean. Large front porch with harbor views, including the graceful bridge to Newport with fairytale necklace lights at night. There were four of us on a girls' weekend, but would be great for multigenerational reunions. Owner was very pleasant, accommodating, and available for questions throughout; she answered within minutes, it seemed. All of us found it even prettier than the photos. Conanticut Island (and town of Jamestown) itself is a treasure, small enough to explore by bike, with lovely houses and great sea views.

Beautiful Views, Close to Everything

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year staying at Middle Sister an we are already talking about renting again next year. The view from the porch can't be overstated ... it really is a lovely place for family and friends to gather, relax, unplug and just hang out together.

There are ample bedrooms to accommodate a large gathering, and the newly installed whole-house fan did a great job keeping the upper floors cool at night the week we were there. The kitchen has been expanded and is really well equipped, so you'll be able to cook to your heart's content!

And, truly, you can't beat the location. Walkable to just about everything ... restaurants, yoga, pharmacy, ice cream, the ferry to Newport ... you name it! And if you want to explore further than the few blocks surrounding the house, then take one of the bikes that that house has to offer.

All in all, it really is a great house in a great location and I can't recommend it enough.

Great porch and view!

  • 4 of 5

Location location location. This house is all about it. The view, the porch, the proximity to the town and the marina are all first rate. Our large family loved all of those. Read the description carefully and note that there is little description about the inside of the house. The beds are tired and the best shower is the one outside ( one tub doesn’t even have a shower nozzle), but if you’re more interested in the porch, the size, and the location than the inside amenities, you’ll love this place. Owner was accommodating and easy to work with.

The perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Middle Sister. 3 generations of our family were able to spend a week together. The porch with the view of the harbor and Newport Bridge provided many hours of relaxation. The home is in close proximity to town and the beach. The kids had a wonderful time playing outside in the large yard. The kitchen was well-stocked with all the essentials. Overall, we were very pleased with the accommodations.

Best view of Narragansett Bay in Jamestown!

  • 5 of 5

The porch on this charming old house is fantastic! It has a newly renovated kitchen with plenty of room to hang while others are cooking. The interior is light and airy. Plenty of bedrooms many with bay views. Right in town for easy getting around.
