About Paul Bernard Smith II
I grew up in Baldwinsville NY and graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering. Over the past 25 years, I have enjoyed supporting clients in providing technical hardware and software solution to assist my customers to design products in the Computer, Medical, Miltary and many other industries. My experience and passion to solve technical issues while exceeding my customer expectations provided me the ability to upgrade, repair and manage Pine Cove Cottage and Bald Eagle Cottage over the past 10 years. My wife and I decided to purchase a second home in the 1000 Islands as another project since we close to putting the finishing touches on Pine Cove Cottage.
Paul Bernard Smith II purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why Paul Bernard Smith II chose Alexandria Bay
My Wife and I have been looking for a vacation home for 20 years in the Islands. We found this old fishing cottage that had lots of potential with a great location with excellent views in 2008. The cottage has been a huge project but the end result has been well worth the effort.
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottage has excellent views of the surrounding Islands, sunrise, sunsets & shipping channel. The location provides private setting that is very close to the town of Alexandria Bay, NY. The private cove offers protection from rough water for our large dock and great swimming.

Best vacation ever
Pine Cove Cottage is the perfect 1000 Island getaway. Everything in the house is first class, well equipped and clean. Combine the views of THE RIVER with the excellent weather we
experienced, and our stay was perfect in every respect. The owner was professional and easy to deal with. We rented the pontoon boat and the small fishing boat and both made our stay more fun for everybody.
We would come back in a nanosecond!
Cottage was well furnished with quality furniture and lacked nothing
This was probably the nicest rental we have ever had. It lived up to our expectations then some. Gorgeous views of the river yet in a private setting. Property manager (Melody) was very attentive and fun to be around. Owner is obviously very particular and the property shows it. Would return in a heart beat.

This island cottage was the perfect place to host our vacation for our blended family of 8. The fishing, swimming and boating were great!! Plenty of room for all to spread out and yet come together for meals prepared in the well equipped kitchen and spacious dining room table. Enough hot water for our whole crew and the outdoor hot and cold running water shower was amazing! Bird watchers spotted osprey, cormorants, loons and wrens and the sightings of the Big Ships were always a real crowd pleaser. Owner Paul and caretaker Melody answered all our questions and needs. If you are looking for an island getaway with plenty of privacy, great views and comfortable accommodations, Pine Cove is for you.
Fantastic property--even better than the photos
Two families spent one week in Pine Cove Cottage in July. The property was excellent. It is even better than the photos would make you believe. The cottage is very large, has several excellent outdoor sitting and relaxing locations. The dockage is protected and plentiful. We were able to easily dock our boat and three jet skis. The kitchen is modern and very large. There are wall mounted air conditioners in the bedrooms to cool the sleeping areas on the warmer nights.
Paul's follow up was excellent. He accompanied us to the property and showed us around and was available via phone with any questions. He promptly returned our security deposit.
The views of the channel are great. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching the freighters. Sunset views were beautiful. We parked and launched our toys from Goose Bay and this worked out very well. Going to the dump was a bit of a hassle but we understand that the island is carry in and carry out.
The only negative would be the lack of drinking water in the home. The water supply is the river/bay and the water is not potable. We did not know this until a couple of weeks before our arrival. Paul left us with a case of bottled water to start us off. We brought additional water as well as a camping-style water filter that made the river water safe. It wasn't a big deal, but was not anticipated when we reserved. We were also asked to do only one load of laundry during our week there. This was a bit of a reach with eight people in the four bedroom home.
The few minor negatives did not detract from my giving this five stars. The home was comfortable, very nice and easily accessed. It is a great home base to visit the 1000 Island region. The waters around the home are filled with fish. Our children literally caught fish on 75% of their casts. Very nice and very relaxing week. We highly recommend Pine Cove Cottage.
There isn't enough time to accurately reflect how happy we were with our stay.
First, the communication between us and Paul was amazing; it was so great to have questions answered in a timely manner and work out any details during our stay. I had also forgotten 2 chargers and not only did Paul mail back one, he replaced the other they could not locate. How is that for customer service.
The home is beautiful, so beautiful I could stay forever. From the hardwood floors to the classy yet cozy decorating it was amazing. There was everything you could think of that was provided and other than food and clothing, there wasn't much else you needed. The outside was just as amazing with a nice fire pit and plenty of chairs and a small side yard (next time we will bring our corn hole boards) with a horseshoe pit - if you count the back porch, lower deck, sun/screen room and the front deck there are so many areas to relax and enjoy the shade or sun that even with a large group, you aren't on top of one another. The bedrooms are adorable! It is great that there are air conditioners in each bedroom, but I would say, we were there during a hot week and one day was extremely humid - no breeze and the downstairs was unbearably hot - an air conditioner downstairs would be nice for 'emergencies'......but still, no complaints - the rest totally made up for that hot evening! The property was well-maintained and clean. The description is exactly if not more than described! There is no shortage of things to do, from games and movies, satellite to the sirius (we enjoyed this while preparing meals), binoculars to watch for ships, a basket of things to do. No matter what the weather, you cannot be bored at this place.
The bay is beautiful and I totally enjoyed the kayaking and canoeing while the guys fished or cooked. Early morning, early evening, always great.
We brought our own boat and enjoyed many trips up and down the river sightseeing - what beautiful homes and properties. We went to Boldt Castle (a must see) and rode into Alex Bay and Clayton for shopping and lunch. We also hit the Boat Museum.
We didn't see all that we wanted to like the Singer Castle and a few lighthouses, so we hope to return.
We would definitely recommend this property to friends and relatives and we would love to come back again! Paul and his wife are gracious enough to share their piece of paradise, and they do everything to ensure you have a wonderful stay.

the perfect getaway
Our stay at the Smith Cottage was incredible. The cottage itself is beautiful & Has everything you could ever need. We went with four other amazing couples & it was so great. The cottage had all the luxuries of home & the view of a lifetime. Traveling around the river on their houseboat was an added bonus. I would reccomend this beautiful cottage to anyone. Can't wait to return.
Relax in comfort and style with a first floor that includes an open great room that overlooks the St. Lawrence River. After a day on the water, prepare your catch of the day in a beautifully appointed kitchen that includes hickory cabinets and all the modern kitchen appliances you’ll need to prepare a memorable meal. A full dinning room with views of Goose Bay is the perfect spot to enjoy dinner with family and friends. Afterwards, plan the next days’ adventure on one of the two patios or in the comfort of the living room. A half bath rounds out the first floor amenities. When it’s time to call it a night, there’s plenty of space for rest and privacy. The second floor of the cottage has 4 bedrooms and two full baths. The master bedroom has a spectacular view of Goose Bay, the main shipping channel, and the very private cove. But don’t worry if you didn’t get the master bedroom, all bedrooms have a view of the water.
