About Jim Humphrey
I built this home for my family. The kids are grown and we are ready to share it with visitors who can appreciate the seclusion and unique views of the Sonoran desert. From here we enjoy walks on the desert, Indian ruins and petroglyphs, and all a major metropolitan center has to offer with in 20 minutes or so.
Why Jim Humphrey chose New River
We were looking for a special place to build, on the edge of the desert in the Cave Creek area. We sent out 20 letters to land owners with property on the edge of the national forest and one owner responded, who had ten acres he would sell. Over the years I have enjoyed creating a desert oasis where the birds and wildlife come to feed and water. It is a unique location that any nature lover is sure to enjoy. There is a huge selection of native plants, cactus and trees surrounding the home and casita.
What makes this House unique
This is our home. We have enjoyed it every day of the last 15 years. When we have visitors, we know they are enjoying the seclusion, the views and the wildlife as well as the pleasures of the house itself (some say it is like a museum)
Pool / Spa
Sports & Adventure Activities
Fabulous in every way.
The home is far better/larger than the online pictures display. The backyard is filled with birds (hummingbird, quail, roadrunner) who snack on the many feeders nestled throughout the manicured landscaping. Wether inside the kitchen, living room or outside on the patio the views were breathtakingly peaceful, beautiful and unobstructed. The owner Jim was fabulous as well as working to make sure his property stays in excellent condition and his guests have everything they need. Our kids enjoyed the pool which can be heated and was very clean. Kitchen with oversized frig and freezer, top-line appliances and wonderfully stocked pantry made shopping simple and cooking seamless. The home is filled with Native American art, reading material, books, board games. No need to pack much the house is so well stocked - it’s a home! There are some stairs and/or small steps leading to bedrooms, sunken living room, kitchen. So can be challenging for elderly or those who are unstable when walking. Aside from that this house was exquisite! Thank you Jim for opening your beautiful home to us and others. God Bless.
Cried when we left (almost!)
Can't say enough about this place. It's comfortable, it's spacious, it's quirky. The kitchen is the best place you'll chop vegetables! We were supposed to meet a friend for dinner and I called and told her she had to come over and let me cook. The views are ridiculous! The hiking is awesome. The only little teeny thing--and this is teeny--is that the pool was cold. But whatever, the hot tub wasn't. We loved this place, but I could see it might not be for everybody. It's a hike into Phoenix, and if you forget something at the grocery store you can't just nip out. It's really quiet. Ice cream is 30 minutes away. If you are interested in bar or restaurant hopping you need to wrap your head around a long drive home. For a quiet family who wants to read, hike, and eat, though, this place is a dream come true.
Actually ice cream is 15 minutes away!
The best statement I can say about this property is, “Be still and know I am God”.
In February, 2018, we came to Arizona for the “Celebration of Life” of our beloved daughter-in-love. It was a sad time for all of us. But the property gave us a since of peace and relaxation. It is backed up to a National Forest. Birds were everywhere and could hear coyote at night. There was Memorabilia everywhere in the home. Our youngest Grandson said it was like “The night at the Museum” movie. He just hoped the buffalo didn’t come alive. The scenery and garden itself was beautiful. The hot tub so very nice. It was too cool to enjoy the infinity pool, but could tell it would be very enjoyable on a hot day overlooking the solitude of the desert. In the kitchen everything you would need was available. Thank you again, Jim, for letting extended family come out and fellowship in such a beautiful location for a day. It meant a lot to us.
A great place to stay
We very much enjoyed our 4 night stay in February. For us, the highlight was the large, open kitchen/dining room with large windows overlooking the pool and desert mountain scenery. The master is huge with fireplace and other bedrooms more than adequate. Kids enjoyed the bunkbeds. We spent a lot of time watching the Olympics in the living room which also has large sliding doors with beautiful desert views. We grilled almost every night in the outdoor eating area and enjoyed the hot tub. Only minor downside was that the kids were disappointed that the pool was too cold to use, probably due to the seasonally cold weather. The owner was responsive when we couldn't get the fireplaces lit and we thank Bianca for getting those started! We'd definitely stay again if we're in the area...
Amazing kitchen, beautiful house, amazing view
We stayed here for a week this winter with the extended family. We have stayed at many VBROs but neve one with such an amazing fully stocked kitchen, it even had spices!!! The master bedroom is HUGE, the other 3 are nice sized. Jim was very easy to work with and answered all our questions quickly. We would highly recommend this location for anyone who is looking for a place that is not in the city with an amazing view- it is about 20 minutes to a grocery store and anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour to key hiking places (there is a couple of great routes that start in the background also). Make sure to head into town (cave creek) and try out the creamery. The only issue we had was the pool was on the fritz so we were not able to use it, the hot tub was great though after a long days hike
An Arizona Experience
This house is pure Arizona with all the luxuries of home. The outdoor living space was where we spent most of our times, even the kids were enamored with the gardens. Everything we could need was available. I would highly recommend this location if you are looking for quiet, relaxation, and a desert experience.
Petroglyphs within 1 3/4-2 miles, thousands of Saguaro cacti just out side your door step, great hiking, bike and horse trails
