About The Owner

Sarah Luck Pearson and Bob Douglas have lived on beautiful Madeline Island for 7 years where she wrote and he built custom homes. Bob's parents, Lynn and Ginny, also owners, live South of the Twin Cities but love to make the trip North to spend time with family, fish, play cards, and boat. 'Northshore' is an extension of family and of their love of the magical island of Madeline.

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

Why The Owner chose Madeline Island

Madeline Island is the jewel of Lake Superior and the only place in the Midwest that has humidity-free summers. It's the Caribbean of the Northwoods! It also has one of the warmest communities we have ever experienced. Come one year, make friends, and you will be back for years to come. We also are enchanted with the nearby Big Bay Town Park that has a long white sand beach and lagoon... one of the most stunning places we've ever seen!

What makes this house unique

Wake up and can only see the woods, hear the wind. Have coffee in fresh new space decorated by young designer. Ride bikes to Big Bay, swim under bridge in lagoon out into the waves. At home, wash the lake off in outdoor shower, nap in hammock, have a drink at the Tiki Bar, grill, then around the firepit watch the sparks join the stars above. Fall into goose-down bedding and dream that your vacation never ends...

Quaint little cottage outside of town

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the cottage for the Madeline Island half marathon. There was plenty of room for the 6 of us. It was a great secluded property about 15-20mins from town. Be prepared for no phone service & I recommend arriving when you still have some daylight as the fire numbers are slightly hard to read when it's dark. The only thing we couldn't find within the cottage was a trash can in the kitchen/common area.--Aside from that, we would definitely stay again.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay was great! Phone service and high speed internet do work... they just weren't plugged in for the season yet. Sorry for that! I wished you had called me so I could have directed you where to plug them in. The garbage and recycling cans are in the kitchen pantry always. Hope you come back next year for the half marathon!

AC didn't work

  • 2 of 5

Overall experience was fine. House was clean and internet worked fine. We are ok with late checkout fee and extra cleaning fee. But we are surprised with $15 charge for garbage. We packed all recycle and garbage seperatly. But still we were charged $15 extra. And AC never worked in there. At checkout we asked the lady who was there and she told me that AC doesn't work. It's summer and it was 80 degrees outside. I would expect refund for this and we are not ok with the garbage fee since we took more time to clean all recycle and garbage ( That made us to checkout late)

Owner's Response: As posted, there is no AC offered at this rental. Guests checked out late, which is subject to fee. The house was left messy, with the guests not following the check-out guide. Also, there was excessive garbage left, which we are charged extra for as all recycling items have to be hand sorted into categories. There were 6 bags alone of recycling. No other guests have had this same issue, but check out on time (unless otherwise arranged) and leave the house clean, without undue amounts of garbage. Such guests would have the same issues with any of the homes rented on the island.

Clean place

  • 4 of 5

The house was fine, 4 bedrooms were nice to have for our group, it is a ways from town but worked for our purpose. The state park and town park is nearby. We had a wedding at the town park so it worked well for our stay. Not walking distance from town but we had cars, no big deal.

Fun time was had by all

  • 5 of 5

Six retired folks stayed there the third week of August. The place was clean and the photos on the web site were accurate. The open floor plan made it easy to visit. We were very comfortable and would recommend it to our friends and family.

If we head that way again, we would stay there!

Perfect house for large group

  • 4 of 5

This home was perfect for our group of two families with teenage kids. Very cute house with a lot of charm. The location is very close to Big Bay Town Park. It was convenient to go out for the morning to the town park or state park and return for lunch before heading back out for more adventures in the afternoon. The kitchen was well supplied with the necessities for cooking for our group. If you plan to grill, bring your own charcoal. Would definitely stay here again.
