The Taos area is abundant with seasonal activities for the whole family. The Casita is located 1 mile west of the wonderful village of Arroyo Seco, 20 minutes north of Taos, 15 minutes from Taos Ski Valley which has some of the steepest and most challenging terrain in the country and where you can access trails to the highest point in the state. The ski valley has some of the most lush and cool creek side trails in the area and only a 15 minute drive from Arroyo Seco. This adorable Casita is lovingly furnished with Asian, South American and Native American touches, original artwork, and all the amenities to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. Cathedral ceilings and traditional vigas give this house a sense of spaciousness and New Mexico character.
Stroll the apple orchard, sip a margarita, a hot cocoa or some iced tea while watching the spectacular New Mexico sunsets on the front porch, or just relax after a day of skiing or hiking. Even at this time of year you can don a fleece jacket and take your coffee or tea to the back portal where you can watch the early morning light play across the mountains as the bunnies enjoy their breakfast. This home combines high quality amenities (such as a very comfortable queen mattress with organic cotton linens and memory foam topper) with family affordability. Whether exploring the town of Taos, the nearby beautiful mountain ranges, or some of the best skiing in the world, Casita Des Montes offers you a cozy, affordable, and accessible home away from home.
Rent the Casita and the 'Green' straw bale house right next door for family gatherings or for celebrations with friends and we will give you a special rate. See # 194842 for details about this property.
The caretakers will help in any way they can, or offer advice or information on all things in the area, from where to eat or shop, to the best hiking trails.
If you visit once, you'll want to come back again and again.

Welcome to Northern New Mexico! I am a licensed massage therapist, specializing in various modalities of healing and am currently living and practicing in Portland, OR. I grew up between Taos and Oklahoma, and always felt Taos to be where my deepest roots grew. I've lived in France and traveled for many years playing music, before finally landing in the Pacific Northwest. My family and I love going back and forth between the dramatic beauty of the high desert of New Mexico and the lush, velvety landscape of Oregon.
Lorca purchased this House in 1985
Why Lorca chose El Prado
The Casita is on family property, passed down to me by my father who had started an Apple Tree Farm, and organic community supported agriculture (CSA) . We honor him and his love of the land by maintaining the property as he would have.
What makes this House unique
Taos, and especially Arroyo Seco, is like no where else on Earth. Our favorite things to do when we come to stay are to river raft, hike, and visit a most wonderful toy store in Taos called Twirl. Just relaxing and watching the marvelous sunsets is reason enough to visit as often as we can. We have made so many wonderful friends since my family discovered the Taos area in the early '70's and continue to visit and catch up with them each time we come back. And then there is that magical light on the mountains that is a source of constant wonderment and joy! Each season has its own unique and beguiling qualities. I invite you to visit us at Casita des Montes and see what we mean!

Close to everything but seems a million miles away...
We didn’t know much about Taos when we booked this gorgeous casita. We were pleasantly surprised by Arroyo Seco and its charms, as well as its proximity to wonderful food and culture, although the casita has everything you could possibly need to prepare a nice home cooked meal. We will definitely be back.
Thank you for staying at the Casita! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your time there and around Arroyo Seco and we look forward to your return.
Nicely decorated cozy home in a great location with spectacular views
This was our first time in the Taos area and we really enjoyed our stay here. The home is close to the Ski Valley and to town. Our dog enjoyed walking around the fenced in area. The night sky was incredible with the amount of stars visible.
The caretakers were very friendly, and although they have a house next door (in addition to another rental house also next door), we felt very secluded and private.
Authentic feel, close to skiing
We stayed here with our two dogs and skied Taos for a few days. Our dogs loved running around the big yard, and the casita was perfect. Right in the middle, it's close to drive to Taos to get dinner or explore the town, and close to Taos Ski Valley as well. (~15-20 mins to either).
The Casita Des Montes was a lovely property and my wife and I were quite pleased with everything the home and Taos area had to offer. The home was extremely well provisioned and immaculately clean on top of that. The cleaning crew and caretakers do a great job of maintaining it.
The bed was very comfortable...one of the best if not the best beds we've ever had in all of our vacation rentals on HomeAway going back to 2008 now. The kitchen had all the necessities including a great dish set from local artist Stephen Kilborne. The only sad part of this for us was finding out that his Taos studio was closed and not having the time to make it another 20 miles down the road to his other studio further south to buy some for ourselves. The kitchen had everything else we could ever think to need including a good variety of spices and various cooking utensils and a great cast iron pot that was one of the best seasoned cast iron pans I've ever gotten the pleasure to use.
The location was quite lovely. We will be honest and say we were a bit nervous going in knowing that there were 3 houses on the property and the caretakers lived next door but it was a complete non-issue and both Lawrence and Birgit were amazingly friendly and a pleasure to interact with. If we needed something, there were there. Otherwise, it felt incredibly private. The fenced yard was highly enjoyed by both of our dogs as well and the sunrises over the Sangre de Cristo mountains were spectacular as always. The nearness to Taos was also quite convenient...it was closer than we thought it would be at maybe 10 minutes to the northern part of Taos including several restaurants and at most 20 minutes with traffic to the downtown historic district.
We also took a day trip over to the Abiquiu area for some hiking and it was just over an hour drive with great scenery the entire way.
We would definitely rent the property again and we will certainly come back to Taos.
We are thrilled to hear that you had a lovely time. Thank you for your kind words, and we welcome you back whenever you can make it again!
This little casita is probably one of the most comfortable and well provisioned properties in which we have ever stayed. Though the bed is just a queen it is very comfortable. The living area offers two facing sofas (sleepers I think) which provide a comfortable place to sit and read. (It amazes me how many rental properties provide no place to comfortably sit and read with a table for a beverage and appropriate lighting for reading.). The kitchen is the best provisioned that I think we've ever seen with a nice size wood dining table that easily seats six. There is a TV with Direct TV service but it's smaller than my computer screen at home. This, however, is no issue for us as pretty much the only time we turn the TV on is to golf on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. There is a lovely patio to one side with table and chairs. The casita is attractively decorated and there are plenty of outlets to charge and run your electronic stuff. And having a washer and dryer is a huge bonus! The couple who manage the property for the owner live next door and are exceptionally gracious and accessible. So very pleased with this this property.
Comfortable and beautiful!
My husband, myself and our two little dogs had a wonderful time staying here. We really appreciated that it was so pet friendly! The cabin is a nicely appointed space having everything we needed. We really enjoyed being close enough to 'Seco' to be able to walk and enjoy the village's amenities like its restaurants, good coffee and a fun outdoor concert. Thank you, Lawrence and Birgit, for taking care of everything!
Thank you so much for staying with us! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit, and look forward to your return.
