This four-bedroom, three-bath home is located right on the water's edge and offers the dual delight of Puako sunsets (which you’ll share with the Honu—sea turtles—who sunbathe on the lava rocks) coupled with views of the summit of Mauna Kea. A well-loved home, where the owners raised their family, Hale Lihikai offers three options for a range of visitors: the Kona Side, the Kohala Side or the entire house, depending on your numbers and needs. Whichever you choose, you will enjoy your time spent amid unique surfing and Hawaiian décor, mature and lush landscaping lovingly planted over the years, and the shoreline of Puako Bay. If you need an additional bedroom for 5 rooms total there is a studio rental above the garage called Hale Lihikai in the Trees VRBO#624088 that can also be rented.
Enter this charming, private place via an arbor by a small pond festooned with water plants, including cabbage and heliotrope. Walk along a coral-lined path beside thick lau’ae ferns, tall bamboo, graceful palms, colorful crotons, huge bird-of-paradise plants and a giant flowering monkeypod tree. The tree is so large that the entire house is cooled by its majestic canopy, and the sea breezes and ceiling fans keep you comfortable whenever you choose to visit. The front porch offers a restful bench under trellises for viewing the plentiful gardens. This is the home’s main entrance, with a beautiful etched-glass door created by Gary Wagner.
The house is set well back from the street, with ample parking reached by passing through a porte-cochere of a separate structure that creates additional privacy from the road.
Hale Lihikai is the perfect vacation home for two families or a multi-generation extended family…with two kitchens (both with ocean views) and accommodations for eight. Rattan furniture throughout is designed for easy living and family life. This home provides quiet contemplation in the gardens, grassy yard, cozy spots for private breakfasts, sunny sand and shore, shaded hammocks, picnic tables on your personal beach …even a “lounging pool” (or wading pool for children) created by lava rocks in the shallows of the ocean!
You will be most likely to spend your time outside it! Hale Lihikai’s sandy “personal beach” is surrounded with Naupaka shrubs, on the other side of which lies the ocean with its lava-rock outcroppings—a favorite spot for Honu to sun themselves. You’ll be tempted to do the same in the natural ocean pool rimmed by rocks—with or without the kids. Your beach has a hammock and lounge chairs under tall, shady palms, picnic tables and a gas grill.

The photos do not do justice. It is even better in real life. We loved being so close to the ocean. The house was very clean on arrival.
We had a large group here: 7 adults and an infant. Plenty of room, gorgeous views, wonderful decorations. the house was very clean with all the equipment needed for making most of our own meals. The weather was hotter than normal so the evenings were a little on the hot side for sleeping but with plenty of fans and an ocean breeze, even that did not deter from the lovely time we had. I would return in a heart beat. Snorkeling is wonderful, although a bit tricky getting out. We all enjoyed the tide pools. There is a small protected pool right in front of the house, nice for my granddaughter.
We had a great time with our group of seven in this beautifully located beach house - and hope to return again. The beds were comfortable, the kitchens were well stocked, and the appliances worked just fine. We mostly ate "at home" and had everything we needed to do that. The furniture was completely fine for a beach house. It was warm during our visit- but the ceiling fans (and extra fans) kept us basically comfortable. It's Hawaii. The property managers were very attentive to our requests. It is true that the property needs some "upkeep" - there were some issues with the ceiling and the house could use a real "spring cleaning" - not just "ready for the next renters" - maybe even fresh paint to cover some of the bug stains. But we thought the house was a great value and a terrific vacation spot!
Would heartily agree that the "Kona" side is getting dated and in need of a refurb....including a window ac in the small "garden" bedroom" with a view of a fishnet draped wall and no ventilation is a needed improvement. Had to spend a night sleeping on a lawnchair where I was devoured by mosquitoes, then 2 nights on the sofa because it was too hot to sleep in the tiny airless Kona br. With the addition of bedroom acs for those hot nights in July this could be a delightful place.We offered to buy a window unit at Costco but were only offered a fan and no response from the rental agent. Ultimately we had to move into an ac hotel for the rest of our stay. The rest of the family toughed out a family reunion in the nicer and airier Kohala side. There was a wedding tent city erected in the adjacent property with some 20 vehicles, though they were not unduly loud. Overall would not return in July.
This is our second stay in the Kona side of this property. Still in love with the location, right on the water in Puako with turtles sunbathing on the rocks! It has a great 3 mile run to the surf spot & back, snorkeling if the weather allows, and a charming well-stocked general store an easy walk. Great rental company, always friendly & leave helpful info & tips. If you're concerned about privacy from the other condo, no worries - it's very thoughtfully screened & fenced so that you hardly notice that you have neighbors.
The house itself is getting pretty tired in spots, definitely deteriorated from out last visit 2 years ago. The older bathroom is a bit grimey but the shower still has great hot water & great water pressure. The beds and sheets are soft & comfy (master is a good size, but the second bedroom is pretty tight - think Europe). The living room is average - furniture is worn and not too comfortable but has a great view of the water. The kitchen was our main complaint - it is sorely in need of an appliance & supply update. The dishwasher would not turn on (front panel was also missing), the little mini-range was probably just above the level of piece-of-junk brand new and now the temperature knob spins like the wheel-of-fortune leaving you guessing. The toaster burns one corner of your bread black and leaves the other corner raw. The knives cut about as well as a spoon & the silverware is pretty rusted.
In short: if you're looking to spend very little time indoors, want to be on the water, and only care about the water pressure, the bed, and the view it's a perfect spot. If you're planning on spending any time lounging in the living room or cooking, look elsewhere.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Puako. The house is right on the beach; clean, comfortable, full of charming memorabilia and antiques. The bed in the beachfront Kohala bedroom was super comfortable, and the numerous fans kept us cool at night. The kitchen had all the equipment and gadgets needed for meal prep, and because of the warm days, we mostly cooked outside on the grill. The neighborhood General Store was well stocked with REAL food (not just snacks) and the proprietors were gracious and friendly. We had to make a supreme effort to put on shirts & shoes to leave the house and the beach tide pools and the turtles, to make a short drive south to glamorous resort shops; or North to the artsy village of Hawi; or East to the cool, misty hill town of Waimea for the Farmers' Market. Some of the best snorkeling we've enjoyed anywhere was at the end of Puako Beach Road. There was so much to do, so close the house, that we'll have to stay twice as long next visit! We had a great time at this lovely home. It had everything we needed. We were a party of 8 with two active young boys. The boogie boards, towels, and chairs made beach time easy. The porches and outdoor spaces and hammocks were just what we needed. Loved the beaches at Mauna Kea and Beach 69. Everyone is asking when we can go again. Aloha!

We will not ask you to wire money nor do we accept credit cards due to high fees.
We're small, local company so sorry, but due to high fees, we do not accept credit cards. 1/4th rent due by check within 14 days of booking. Balance due 60 days prior to arrival. Each payment, once received, is non-refundable in the event of cancellation unless we can rebook dates. Checks/money orders accept in US funds. We recommend that you purchase travel insurance. Cmas/NY due dates vary.
