You drive some two hours on the Hana Highway, one of the USA’s most renowned roads, crossing about sixty bridges as you wind along the scenic crags of Haleakala marveling at the waterfalls and looking down on the wide ocean. This spectacular journey takes you to the best place in the world, in our view. Our beaches—there are six of them, all quite different—are never crowded, our ocean and mountain views are everywhere superb, our people delightful, our rain forest is fascinating and our climate perfect. The spiritual feeling of old Hawai’i is hard to find nowadays, yet it permeates Hana, far from tourist hordes. But, if you are looking for a happy place to stay in Hana, you probably know all that already; and that a day trip is not enough. So here’s why to ring us to check out Kolea Cottage as your comfortable, competitively priced, Hana base for a few days or weeks.
Kolea, timber-built in 2003, (permit t20120005) is located a mile from Hana's tiny airport on the lower slopes of the 10,000 foot Mount Haleakala, surrounded by lawn carved out of the forest in a secluded corner of our fruit farm. Our 11-acre estate is bursting with flowers, fruit trees and tropical plants of many sorts. Guests are welcome to fruit from our trees, flowers from the garden and books from our library to read while listening to CDs of Hana musicians or the dawn and dusk bird chorus, enjoying the ocean view from the lanai.
Kolea’s principal bedroom has a queen bed, the second bedroom twin beds or king bed. Soft linen and towels are provided. Bathroom with tub. Covered lanai with seating. In total, 1,200 sq ft of comfortable home. The kitchen area, which has oven, microwave, blender, large fridge-freezer, lovely granite worktops and plenty of storage, is fully equipped with cooking and dining things. The washer and drier are in a closet off the lanai. Kolea has Time Warner cable connected to a 32” flat-screen color TV, CD/DVD player, telephone, internet and wi-fi. Any special requirements—give us a call and we will do our best.
One warning. Hana is not suitable for those who have a bug phobia. We live in a rainforest, and though it's fully screened in some bugs and geccos penetrate even the best screening.
We provide beach towels, and we can guide you on the eating possibilities, hiking and many things to do around Hana, including special local events which are often not much publicized. None are more than a short drive away.
Kolea Cottage is named for the beautiful bird that owns the cottage lawn, otherwise known as the Hawaiian golden plover. You may meet her if you are here in the right season, for this remarkable navigator puts on her best plumage and departs in the spring to fly 3,000 miles across the ocean for a summer in Alaska, where she raises a family before returning accurately to our yard in the fall.

Gecko's Rule this Roost
Stayed here March 17, 2018. House was basic but nice, roomie and setting was peaceful. However, we had at least 6 geckos roaming the house and several spiders. As I tried to figure out where they were coming from I saw most if not all screens had holes in them or were patched, had to close all the windows to stop the infestation. Wasn't the family pleaser I was hoping for for wife and kids when I booked.
Lee, I am so sorry you were unhappy with the cottage. However, those of us living in a tropical rainforest find it quite impossible to exclude all geckoes and spiders and the tiny ants. There is even an invasion of minuscule gnats one day a year, so small they get straight through any screen. One could try to do so with double doors while keep all windows shut and installing aircon, but this would be contrary to most people's idea of enjoying our excellent climate. None of these creatures are threatening in any way, so we try to make the situation clear to guests, to discourage anyone uncomfortable with the likelihood encountering one or two from staying in East Maui, and hope guests enjoy the gecko antics. The patches you saw in the screens stemmed from another recent problem, the attentions of an extraordinarily persistent mouse. He was dealt with before your arrival, but the patches of his attacks on the screens were still in place. Thank you for highlighting this, though. We are now going to replace all the screens.
The cottage and grounds are gorgeous! I would definitely stay here again. We had a very relaxing stay and only wish we would have booked it for another night or 2.
Amazing location, views and hospitality
Lovely cottage with amazing views and great location on the road to Hana. We would definitely stay here again. I highly recommend trying their home made banana chips, they are phenomenal.
Amazing little cottage tucked a few minutes drive from Hana!! We all loved it!! Thank you for letting us stay here!
House is fabulous; getting there by the Hana Road is a challenge worth the trip. We enjoyed Hana and all its beauty and restfulness. Because the house is on a working farm (coconuts, avocados, passion fruit, and chocolate plants are within yards) renters need to be prepared for expected geckos, spiders, and assorted bugs. The owners are very cordial and we enjoyed the stay and the area. The people of Hana were very friendly. Enjoy!
There is a small local airport 5 minutes away: Hana airport (HNM).
