Description

St. George House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9)

Our renovated 1870s refuge is the closest you can get to a comfortable old house in the country, but still be in New York City. The lush landscape with tree swing and play area allows you to switch off Manhattan, but it's just a 20 minute walk or four bus stops, down to the Ferry, then the greatest free ride in the world into town. You can see the Verrazano Bridge twinkling from our windows, and the sea from our street.

Indoors you will have room to spread out, cook dinner and relax after a tough day of tourism. Just bring your clothes, we provide everything else. Extended family and friend groups of 5-9 are our specialty. If your crowd is bigger, we have another apartment upstairs in the same house.

You don't need a car, shops and restaurants are a few minutes' walk away. But if you bring one, you will have no trouble parking on our street without the dreaded 'alternate side' hassles you get elsewhere in NYC.

Staying here does require climbing steps, and some spirit of adventure. You need to feel comfortable in a diverse residential neighborhood where people of many races and economic groups live close together, in harmony.

Add a romantic, adventurous twist to your stay in New York.

Despite fare increases everywhere else, the Staten Island Ferry remains the greatest FREE ride in the world, the most beautiful way to enter New York and view the Statue of Liberty and the downtown skyline. Ferries run 24/7, usually every half hour. The ferry terminal is a relaxing 15 minute walk downhill from the house. If you're feeling less energetic on the way back, cabs are available at the terminal for about $5.

Cheap Eats

Within a few minutes walk of our house, you can enjoy, Mexican, Italian, Polish, Sri Lankan and Senegalese cuisines, among others, at much lower prices than the Manhattan tourist traps. Feast on Downtown Staten Island!

About Elena or Craig

This is a genuine family business run by me, my husband and children. We live a few blocks away and love having our guests discover the pleasures of Staten Island. We are more than happy to help you plan your trip and make the most of our wonderful city.

Elena or Craig purchased this house in 2009

Why Elena or Craig chose Staten Island

Our row of eight Victorian homes stretching up a steep hill above the harbor is a unique architectural phenomenon for New York City. Trees tower above you and cool breezes blow on those hot summer nights. Many of the neighboring houses are owned by the Ganas Community, a modern commune, which gives our block a particular friendly, easygoing atmosphere.

You are in your own world, but the city is at your doorstep. And instead of riding the subway, you get to sail across the harbor, watch the skyscrapers loom out of the horizon, and the Statue of Liberty so close you could almost touch it.

About our recent stay at Vertigo villa

It suited our family group very well. Appreciated the little extras flowers, tea, coffee. My granddaughter loved the dolls house, was her seat the whole trip.

Was wonderful to spend time with our lovely family on Staten island.

The children enjoyed the rope swing and were disappointed not to see any snakes, when they went on a hunt. The weather was great warm no rain,so lucky.

Obviously an old property, but it gave us the taste of old New York economical for a large group.

Will be recommending it to family and friends.

If you want limited space and expensive prices you go to the Waldorf

A bit worned out

  • 2 of 5

We we`re a bit disapointed when we arrive, one of the bedrooms was in the basement, and it was a bit smelly, we found out why, the following day.

One of the bathrooms was leaking down the cealing in to the basemant bedroom, not very comfortable. We did take contact to the renter, and he was a a were of the problem. He`s solution was to move the bed to another lokation in the house. The cleaning could have been better, so all in all , a disapointment. Luckily we did`nt spend much time in the house, only to sleep in.

Owner's Response: This account is not exactly correct. We have had a problem with water from one of the showers leaking through the bathroom tiles, but only if water gets out of the shower cabin. The temporary solution is just to take showers more carefully. We explained this to the guest, then checked back by email later in his stay to see if his problem had been resolved. He did not answer the second email,, so we assumed everything was OK. We intend to address the problem by putting in new tiles, but need to do that during our winter break when we don't have guests coming and going all the time. As for the third bedroom, it is on a basement level. But because of the tilt of the house on our hill, it is above ground in the front with considerable light and ventilation. It makes a very popular hangout for teenagers or older children, though we admit adults may prefer to stay in the two lovely bedrooms upstairs.

Very relaxing

  • 5 of 5

There were 8 of us on this birthday weekend. We had a blast in the city. Then came back to a very comfortable home. The accommodations were spot on. Very comfortable and very relaxing. Thank you for a wonderful weekend. The hosts were amazing through out the entire process with any questions we had. Again, thank you.

Worth for cost.

  • 3 of 5

Worth for money. Free ferry to major attractions was very useful and convenient. Victorian house, therefore visitors have to expect the run down condition of the house. Surrounded neighbourhoods are impoverished. Only two good bedrooms for a family with children. However, we enjoyed the stay.

Owner's Response: We are happy you enjoyed your stay, but we do rather prefer the idea of being atmospheric to "run down." It's also more fair to call our neighborhood diverse than "impoverished." You can find many elements of New York life -- from well-to-do families in stately historic homes to struggling immigrants -- living side-by-side, and we like it that way. But guests should definitely be prepared for an authentic urban experience.

An answer to prayer...

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough good things about this house and the people who own it. We have seven kids and spent sixteen days this summer on an American history trip (Niagara Falls, Boston, Lexington & Concord, Plymouth, Cape Cod, etc). We were headed into New York, kind of on a whim and with no reservations (because that's the way we roll, lol). We prayed that God would bring us to the perfect spot for our big family, and this house popped up on my phone just as we were entering this enormous city, completely lost on a Saturday night. I called the owner, and, having had a last-minute cancellation, the house was ready and waiting for us at that very moment. We were literally just a couple miles from the tunnel to get there. LOVE how God works! Anyway, the owners were amazing. They quickly texted us the needed information to get to the house, park, and get inside, and we were unpacking our van just as the sun was going down. This house has CHARACTER! My family loved it, as there was much to explore. My little ones loved having toys and books to play with, and after having been cooped up in the van for most of the day (and after staying in a much smaller house for the previous week), all nine of us had space to spread out. Our middle-aged kids were also thrilled with the swing, the garden snails, and their own private yard to explore. The house is in great proximity to a grocery store and the ferry station, which we used frequently. It has a well-stocked kitchen, plenty of linens and towels, and pretty much everything we could have needed. If you are looking for pristine and ritzy, go stay at a fancy hotel; but if you love the character of old houses and would like a place to stretch your legs, this is the house for you. Thanks for a wonderful experience!

Great Place

  • 5 of 5

This place was great. Large enough to spend some time apart but quaint enough to hang out with everyone.

The location was easy to get to from all airports using public transit or personal vehicles.

Only mishap was we were expecting one more bed, but due to a makeover it wasn't there. We contacted Elena and Craig who explained the situation and that there was a mattress and sheets to use in replace of the bed.

Seeing as they were high school students, they didn't care what they slept on and he was just happy he didn't have to sleep on the floor!

Great place, could not recommend more!

Our neighborhood is known as either downtown Staten Island or St. George --, a lively, "up-and-coming" diverse area across New York Bay from Lower Manhattan. You can meet people from all over the planet within a few blocks, and taste their foods for a reasonable price. Then hop on the Ferry to see the sights. If you enjoy an urban setting where people of different skin colors and economic levels live close together (in harmony), you will fit right in.
