Built circa 1900, this beautiful Queen Anne house was first home to the prominent Jim Stephens and his family. Fifty five years later, it entered ours. The story goes...Ralf Carter Sr. purchased the home in a 'cash only' auction for several thousand dollars. It was here that he lived with his wife Ruth till their mid-nineties. Ralf Sr.'s hope was that his only son Ralf Jr. would retire to the Murphys home with his own wife, Evelyn. In the years following the former Carter's passing, Ralf and Evelyn lovingly restored the home to its former beauty. Until retirement day comes, the Queen Anne on 558 Main Street is now a beautiful home-away-from home for all those needing a place to stay in the charming town of Murphys, CA..
As it goes with old homes, the Queen Anne began to show its age following the elder Carter's passing. It took a year and a half to restore the home to its former beauty and no detail was overlooked. Much remains original, except for the windows. Showcasing 10' ceilings, the salon of this house was a popular place to be after the turn of the 20th century, with the parlor adjoining the living room. From the intricate woodwork details, original hardwood floors throughout, a stunning staircase, large eat-in kitchen and windows everywhere, nothings has been spared in making this house a true home. You wouldn't even know that it had no bathrooms when it was first built! The 'outhouse' has since been moved inside and made much more comfortable and modern. In fact, there are even two!

About Evelyn Carter
My family and I live in the quiet hills of Oakland. It is very tranquil living among nature. The Queen Anne House offers us similar feeling of peace and quiet. Even though Main Street is often busy with traffic, sitting in the backyard gives us the feeling of being away from it all. My family and I love Murphys. While retirement is not feasible yet, we decided to share our home to folks like us who like to stay in quiet places and relax.
Evelyn Carter purchased this House in 1955
Why Evelyn Carter chose Murphys
Less than a five-minute walk into 'downtown', the Queen Anne is perfect for private functions or family gatherings. (please inquire for more info on this) Sitting on an over-sized, completely fenced-in compound on a prime location on Main Street, it's the ideal place for hosting a large barbecue, (with added fee)sipping coffee at twilight or playing badminton on the lawn. And with flowers, fruits, and vegetables growing abundantly around the house, you'll find everything at your disposal.
What makes this House unique
Other things of interest include: * a farmer's market in the summer every Friday, just around the corner from the house. * Mercer Caverns is about a mile away. * more than twenty five wine tasting venues and vineyards dot the Murphys landscape. * Wildly popular concerts at the local Ironstone Vineyard's Amphitheater. * Outdoor live music and concerts at Murphys Park. * Lots of restaurants and shops just down the street. * Calaveras Big Trees Park is a short drive away---for hiking, biking and picnicking. * White Pine Lake in Arnolds offers good fishing and only about 20 minutes drive. Whatever you choose to do, we hope your stay provides you a well-deserved vacation-peace, quiet and plenty of fun. You are guests in our home. Enjoy!

Lots of charm
Evelyn is a one woman show and ensures everything is ready to go with ample linens and towels. The house is quaint and rustic. We have stayed several times and the location is perfect. The Karaoke setup will light up the night after a day of wine tasting.
Review such as yours makes everything worthwhile for me! I am very grateful for your patronage and for appreciating the humble accommodation I provide. The Queen Anne is not a house--it is a home. I hope I can continue to improve my service. Hope to have you again next year.
The house was very nice. The grounds outside could use a little sprucing up, watering manicuring. The location was great...just a short walk to all the shops, wineries and restaurants downtown. The only negative was the air conditioning. It is individual room air conditioners, and some work better than others. I'm guessing that is due to location of the room...a room with more direct sun exposure gets hotter and thus the air conditioner isn't as capable of cooling it. We had a very hot weekend so I'm sure that affected the result too.
Thank you so much for your constructive review on my vacation rental. I hope to address the issues you brought to my attention and hope to do better next time. Unfortunately, after spending so much money restoring the house in 2008, I could not afford centralized air conditioning. I also lost my husband halfway into the restoration. I opened my vacation rental three months later without really knowing how to run one! Reviews like yours are encouraging. It makes me want to work harder! :) You are right on the air conditioning issue where the bedroom is exposed to direct sun. Will figure out something this weekend.
The grounds do need work and I try not to use much water for watering the yard just to keep it green. I just water the trees and shrubs on weekends that I am up in Murphys. But I will work on the grounds as soon as the hot temperatures let up. I do hope you had a good time in Murphys. Thanks again.
Beautiful home, great place to stay in Murphys!
We rented the Queen Anne the weekend of our daughter's wedding, which was held at Vida Buena Farm in Vallecito. Reservations and check-in were a breeze and Evelyn (owner) has thoughtfully provided a binder and visuals throughout the home that helps guests be more comfortable. The home is well kept, spacious and centrally located; everything in Murphys was in walking distance: coffee, bakery, lunch and dinner, park, hair salon, it was all available! It was a perfect place to spend the evening before and after the wedding ceremony! We would recommend the Queen Anne to anyone looking for a special place to stay in the Murphys area.
It is with so much gratitude that I thank you for your wonderful, informative review of our home, The Queen Anne. It was a pleasure to have you and family as guests. Thank you for the recommendation.
Comfy stay at Murphys
Great location and ease of use, Evelyn is very helpful she even made sure we got our phone we left in property after checking out. Would definitely go again, had a great time staying and both roaming around Murphys and skiing at bear valley. Perfect for two families with children of various ages.
Beautiful Historic Home in Downtown Murphys
We stayed at the Queen Anne for the weekend and it was absolutely perfect! The location is fantastic, walking distance to anything you'd want to do downtown. The house was super cute and very well kept. I highly recommend the Queen Anne and look forward to staying there again soon!
Weekend in Murphys!!
I rented the Queen Ann for my sisters bachelorette party. We wanted a weekend full of wine tasting and hanging out. The Queen Ann was the perfect place for us to stay! It is a wonderful house! Plenty big enough for all of us, and had a very homey feeling. The location was just great, we were able to walk everywhere. The house was very clean and had all the nessaitites we needed for the weekend. We wouldn't have changed anything. And I would definitely stay there again.
Thank you to Eveyln for allowing us to use you home for the weekend!
It was a pleasure having you and your group at our home. To know that you all enjoyed your stay is the best compliment I could have. I thank you for your very nice comments. I work hard to ensure that the house is comfortable for the guests such as yourself. I hope to have you stay with us again in the future. Thanks again.
The Queen Anne is situated right on Main Street, a mere 5 minutes walk to downtown. Guests may come in and park their cars inside the back yard by entering through Church Street. The house is but a few meters to Val du Vino Vineyards.
