Built circa 1900, this beautiful Queen Anne house was first home to the prominent Jim Stephens and his family. Fifty five years later, it entered ours. The story goes...Ralf Carter Sr. purchased the home in a 'cash only' auction for several thousand dollars. It was here that he lived with his wife Ruth till their mid-nineties. Ralf Sr.'s hope was that his only son Ralf Jr. would retire to the Murphys home with his own wife, Evelyn. In the years following the former Carter's passing, Ralf and Evelyn lovingly restored the home to its former beauty. Until retirement day comes, the Queen Anne on 558 Main Street is now a beautiful home-away-from home for all those needing a place to stay in the charming town of Murphys, CA..
As it goes with old homes, the Queen Anne began to show its age following the elder Carter's passing. It took a year and a half to restore the home to its former beauty and no detail was overlooked. Much remains original, except for the windows. Showcasing 10' ceilings, the salon of this house was a popular place to be after the turn of the 20th century, with the parlor adjoining the living room. From the intricate woodwork details, original hardwood floors throughout, a stunning staircase, large eat-in kitchen and windows everywhere, nothings has been spared in making this house a true home. You wouldn't even know that it had no bathrooms when it was first built! The 'outhouse' has since been moved inside and made much more comfortable and modern. In fact, there are even two!
