Winters bring lots of snow but few really freezing days, and lots of sun. Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley have merged to form the largest ski area in the US, with 6,000 acres of terrain. Your ski pass is valid at both and there are frequent shuttles between them. Shuttle bus service to the Alpine Meadows Lodge stops at the front of the home. Back country and cross country ski opportunities abound as well. In addition to Alpine/Squaw, six other downhill areas (including Homewood, Northstar, Donner, Sugar Bowl, Heavenly and Incline Village) and three Nordic ski resorts are within a short drive. And when you are done with that, relax in the hot tub or sauna, then toast by the fireplace!
In summer Alpine Meadows/ Tahoe has some of the best hiking, boating and mountain biking in the world, all in close proximity to the spectacular Lake Tahoe. Some years you can ski on the 4th of July, then rent some kayaks at Sandy Beach and paddle to a private cove for an afternoon of swimming and lounging, all in one day. Or you can bike right from Alpine Meadows down the family-friendly bike path around the lake. For some lazy fun, raft down the Truckee River with family or friends. You can hike or bike the famed Tahoe Rim and Flume trails, or take off on the Pacific Crest trail and go as far as you like. Nearby jeep trails include the Rubicon Trail. For kayakers, besides Lake Tahoe, there are Donner, Stampede and Boca lakes nearby. For more sedate tastes, there are cruises on the lake, golfing, or fishing, or wine tasting and fine restaurants. And you can count on perfect weather. The nights are cool, the days are just comfortably warm; there is almost no rain and an average of over 300 days of sunshine a year.
Despite all the activity, Alpine Meadows it is completely commercial free, without the noise and congestion associated with being in a ski village. Shopping and excellent restaurants are in Tahoe City or Olympic Valley, just 8 minutes away. You have all the advantages of a world class resort, yet a tranquil environment where the loudest noise is the stream outside your bedroom.
Keywords: ski house,
We rented the house for 4 nights, for two families. The house is beautiful, very comfortbale, and just as described. It had everything we needed for a stress free time with 6 kids with us, including thermometer, condiments, and spices :) The quality of the kitchen ware was great so were the Laura Ashley and Ralph Lauren bread spreads/comforters.
It is literally a few minutes drive from Alpine Meadows skiing resort, and we were able to come back to have lunch and give the little ones naps before hitting the slopes again. We also enjoyed the sauna, which was great after a full day of skiing and playing in the snow.
We enjoyed every day of our stay and would definitely recommend the house to others. Plus Sharon was great and made the whole experience of renting from VRBO absolutely great.
We had a great time meeting up with friends. The house worked out quite well for our get-together. Well equipped for when we wanted to stay home, lots to do when we wanted an activity. Cable and internet and cell phone reception were so-so but that seems to be status quo for the area in general. Confusing light switches. Weather was wonderful, not too hot not too cold, no humidity. Lots of good restaurants in Tahoe City with outdoor seating,we enjoyed Jake's and Christy Hill. Shopping fun, heavy on sport and resort type shops.
Wonderful home as advertised. Stayed over a week and enjoyed every single day. Middle of summer in a mountain paradise. Lilting backround from rushing river makes everything seem calming. 3 floors with nooks can be seen as lots of places to play or rest away from the crowd. Only issues is going up and down stairs inside home which seems to be universal in these homes in hillsides.
We very much Enjoyed our stay. Plenty of space and near all the attractions. Grilled on the deck with the bubbling stream below,
Wonderful decks right off the bedrooms all with the stream as a backdrop.
You will not want to leave
The house is very comfortable, spacious, cozy, well decorated. It is very convenient located to the Alpine Meadow Skeeing Resort, hiking, rafting, biking, riding, very close to the boat rental. It is secluded but very close to the Tahoe city activities and shopping. Our family had a great time and I sure recommend it for your vacation, and I would love to return here in the future.
