About Barbara

Gardiner, Montana is my home. I enjoy the lifestyle of living in a small rustic 'tucked-in-the-wilderness' town. As you walk to the Post Office or grocery store, people will wave to you on the way. Surrounded by mountains, beautiful 'Big Sky' and wildlife. Some say this is 'the end of the road.' I prefer to think of it as 'the Beginning of the Road.' It is a wonderful place to experience the refreshing adventure and beauty of nature.

Barbara purchased this apartment in 2009

Why Barbara chose Yellowstone Country

It is a beautiful treasure to have Yellowstone for my home. I remember the wonder and excitement of my first trip here. The roaring geysers, the painter's palettes of radiant hues shimmering under the waters of the steamy hot springs and bubbling mud pots. Wildlife with no fear. Herds of free-roaming great bison, majestic elk, ambling grizzly and black bears. Mountainsides of rainbows of wildflowers. It will be my pleasure to share Elk River Lodge and the beauty of Yellowstone with you. I trust that the wonder will touch your life, refresh you and you will take some of the Wonder, Excitement and Beauty home with you.

It is outstanding to see the hot springs and geysers with their wonder and unique beauty, each different than the one before. Every season changes the beauty to new palates of colors and symphonies of action. The animals also change with the seasons. Bears emerging from their dens in the late winter. Wildlife babies in the spring. In summer, moving into the prime of their beauty. The majestic elk and bighorn rut in the autumn, with golden aspens & cottonwoods in the mountain valleys. Winter with the elk & wolves in their primal dance for survival in the pristine snow. Arrive in the winter during the new moon and see the Milky Way in all of its glory! During the winter, daytime snowcoach tours are available to Old Faithful from Mammoth Hot Springs, which located near Gardiner.

You will have an outstanding trip to Yellowstone!

What makes this apartment unique

Some have said that a lifetime could be spent here and not see it all. The opportunities are: Viewing wildlife in their natural environment is a premier point in visiting Yellowstone. In the fall (full rut starts approximately Sept 12), is a favorite time to come see the exciting Elk Rut, where the Majestic Elk Bulls in their Prime vie with each other for their harem for cows. Mammoth (5 miles south) is a main viewing area. Bison are easily viewed in both the Lamar and Hayden Valleys. Wolves, with Elk and Bison, are most likely to be found in the Lamar Valley. The Old Yellowstone Trail, starting 3 blocks from the home is an outstanding location to see the wildlife in the winter. All of these areas are within driving distance with beautiful Wilderness Scenery along the way. There is Incredibly More to see than I could ever possible describe in a short paragraph!! Pristine Wilderness... Wildlife... Geysers... Hot Springs... History... Fishing... Hiking... and More! A Lifetime of Adventure!! Gardiner is the headquarters for the Yellowstone Association, which holds Institute Field Classes relating to the environment, biology, geology and history of the Yellowstone area. These exciting Institute Classes take place in the field, viewing first hand what is being learned. Elk River Lodge is located 3 blocks from the Heritage Resource Center for the National Park Service of Yellowstone National Park, where resides the archives, library and museum artifacts relating to the history of Yellowstone. With appointments/library card one may explore the fascinating history and artifacts of Yellowstone.

During the winter season the rental is available at a low-season rates. Check the calendar for rates & availability. Elk River Lodge is a very convenient location to see and photograph wildlife in the Lamar Valley, or those enjoying the Adventure & Beauty of Yellowstone. Snowcoaches, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available out of Mammoth

Comfortable and convenient

  • 5 of 5

Elk River Lodge was very comfortable, we also appreciated the collection of books about Yellowstone. The small town of Gardiner was just a couple of blocks away,. We were traveling with two young grandchildren and they enjoyed playing with the owners dog in the fenced yard.

Perfect fit for us!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived on a Friday afternoon, no issues with check-in. Property is super convenient to Northern Entrance to Yellowstone and walking distance to several restuarants and shops. The house was very clean and plenty spacious for our family of 5. We hit the Gardiner Market around the corner each morning to stock up on supplies before venturing into the Park. Barbara stopped in for short chat, very pleasant and helpful! Highly recommend.

A beautiful, quiet stay!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, quiet stay at Elk River Lodge! We stayed 4 nights and went into Yellowstone National Park 3 days. Elk River Lodge is just a few minutes away from the North Entrance, and within walking distance of various restaurants and gift shops. Our 2 teenagers made themselves at home in the second bedroom, and thought the door to the back balcony/stairs was cool! While we enjoyed the Master Bedroom with its own very nice bathroom. We spent our days in Yellowstone, but each night it was nice to return "home", have a Wifi connection to catch up with family, and relax and refresh. And though it was nice to have the option of eating out, the kitchen looked very new and had all the appliances and kitchenware we needed to cook on our own too. The yard and flowers around the house are beautiful too!

Each day we went to a different part of Yellowstone. One of our favorite days was in Lamar Valley, where we were able to watch herds of bison and elk (far down in the valley) and also saw Pronghorn Antelope and a Black Bear. We also loved the Canyon area!

Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Outstanding

Wonderful stay!!! Brownies were great. The only issue was not being able to turn the air any lower than 72 it was hot during our stay. The location is great walking distance to everything in Gardiner- 5 stars but don't really want everyone to know :) rather keep it to ourselves

Great "Base Camp"

  • 5 of 5

Even after reading the previous very positive reviews of this rental unit, it exceeded the expectations of my husband and me. It is truly a “home away from home” from the spacious, nicely furnished open kitchen/dining/living room area to comfortable bedrooms with two baths to the small backyard with a barbeque. It is a great base “camp” for making long day trips into the Park (a large cooler for drinks and food is provided for the use of guests); and, for exploring the small town of Gardiner on foot. The owner, Barbara, and her dog, Derrick, live in the basement apartment, and, if you are an animal lover, you get to meet him. We did, but except for welcoming and thanks for coming visits we seldom saw either, and her brownies are the most moist, chocolatey we’ve had. For first-time Yellowstone visitors or those who want more in depth information about the area, Barbara is very knowledgeable and willing to share. Our only regret is that we didn’t find her place until our third visit to Yellowstone/Gardiner.
