About Barbara

Gardiner, Montana is my home. I enjoy the lifestyle of living in a small rustic 'tucked-in-the-wilderness' town. As you walk to the Post Office or grocery store, people will wave to you on the way. Surrounded by mountains, beautiful 'Big Sky' and wildlife. Some say this is 'the end of the road.' I prefer to think of it as 'the Beginning of the Road.' It is a wonderful place to experience the refreshing adventure and beauty of nature.

Barbara purchased this house in 2009

Why Barbara chose Yellowstone Country

It is a beautiful treasure to have Yellowstone for my home. I remember the wonder and excitement of my first trip here. The roaring geysers, the painter's palettes of radiant hues shimmering under the waters of the steamy hot springs and bubbling mud pots. Wildlife with no fear. Herds of free-roaming great bison, majestic elk, ambling grizzly and black bears. Mountainsides of rainbows of wildflowers. It will be my pleasure to share Elk River Lodge and the beauty of Yellowstone with you. I trust that the wonder will touch your life, refresh you and you will take some of the Wonder, Excitement and Beauty home with you.

It is outstanding to see the hot springs and geysers with their wonder and unique beauty, each different than the one before. Every season changes the beauty to new palates of colors and symphonies of action. The animals also change with the seasons. Bears emerging from their dens in the late winter. Wildlife babies in the spring. In summer, moving into the prime of their beauty. The majestic elk and bighorn rut in the autumn, with golden aspens & cottonwoods in the mountain valleys. Winter with the elk & wolves in their primal dance for survival in the pristine snow. Arrive in the winter during the new moon and see the Milky Way in all of its glory! During the winter, daytime snowcoach tours are available to Old Faithful from Mammoth Hot Springs, which located near Gardiner.

You will have an outstanding trip to Yellowstone!

What makes this house unique

Some have said that a lifetime could be spent here and not see it all. The opportunities are: Viewing wildlife in their natural environment is a premier point in visiting Yellowstone. In the fall (full rut starts approximately Sept 12), is a favorite time to come see the exciting Elk Rut, where the Majestic Elk Bulls in their Prime vie with each other for their harem for cows. Mammoth (5 miles south) is a main viewing area. Bison are easily viewed in both the Lamar and Hayden Valleys. Wolves, with Elk and Bison, are most likely to be found in the Lamar Valley. The Old Yellowstone Trail, starting 3 blocks from the home is an outstanding location to see the wildlife in the winter. All of these areas are within driving distance with beautiful Wilderness Scenery along the way. There is Incredibly More to see than I could ever possible describe in a short paragraph!! Pristine Wilderness... Wildlife... Geysers... Hot Springs... History... Fishing... Hiking... and More! A Lifetime of Adventure!! Gardiner is the headquarters for the Yellowstone Association, which holds Institute Field Classes relating to the environment, biology, geology and history of the Yellowstone area. These exciting Institute Classes take place in the field, viewing first hand what is being learned. Elk River Lodge is located 3 blocks from the Heritage Resource Center for the National Park Service of Yellowstone National Park, where resides the archives, library and museum artifacts relating to the history of Yellowstone. With appointments/library card one may explore the fascinating history and artifacts of Yellowstone.

During the winter season the rental is available at a low-season rates. Check the calendar for rates & availability. Elk River Lodge is a very convenient location to see and photograph wildlife in the Lamar Valley, or those enjoying the Adventure & Beauty of Yellowstone. Snowcoaches, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available out of Mammoth

Many friends go to Florida for the winter. I figured, why not go to the mountains and Yellowstone Park in October! I was not disappointed with my decision. The house is spotless, comfortable, has an open floor plan, is within blocks of the entrance to the park and the historic Roosevelt Arch. The kitchen is fully stocked, there is a washer and dryer and dishwasher - what's not to love!!. Not to be missed are the Elk hanging out on the athletic fields of the Gardiner School just blocks away. It is a beautiful time of year. The Aspens started the month being flame yellow against the pines. The weather is changeable but that means you get new scenery every day as the light changes. From cloud filled days that you can watch come through the Paradise Valley or get hung up on Electric Peak to sky blue, sunny days. It is ever changing. Photographers would have a heyday, not only here in Gardiner but, of course, in the park as well. During October the Park does start to close down facilities but there is still more than enough to do. Pack a lunch and head on through. Traffic is cut way back so you have time to slow down, relax and just gaze at the scenery.

It has been a wonderful month in a terrific home with Barbara as a terrific hostess. The welcoming brownies are becoming legend, her hospitality is un matched. Barbara is very knowledgeable about the area, it's history, geology, architecture, astronomy - you name it. A very kind and helpful host. I'll be back. Thanks again.

Clean,comfortable and convenient

  • 4 of 5

The directions to find the VRBO were good. Parking was ideal. The place was clean, comfortable and very convenient for Yellowstone. There was a welcoming plate of brownies which was a nice touch.

The apartment was well equipped and "homely". The only oddity was that the bathroom for the second bedroom was the other side of the living room/kitchen area.

The kitchen was well equipped and there was a supermarket conveniently close by.

This little house is VERY convenient to town and the North Entrance of Yellowstone. The home is cozy and comfortable. Barbara is a wonderful hostess that tends to any requests quickly. We also enjoyed playing with her sweet dog, Derek.

Nice house in kind of a dumpy town

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable, clean house. Quiet. Barbara left us some great brownies. Very convenient to Yellowstone. One bedroom had its own bath, only negative was the other bedroom, you had to pass through the living room. Perhaps our best lodging in a 2-week vacation.

Great Place to Stay - Like Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

Very impressed how clean and neat everything was. Even had a fresh batch of brownies waiting for us upon our arrival. Everything was exactly as described and more. Very convenient to shopping, eating places and the Park entrance.

Would stay here again if we are in the area and would recommend it to anyone.

Great home and perfect base for exploring Yellowstone

  • 5 of 5

Barbara's place is right in downtown Gardner, in close walking distance to restaurants and there is a small supermarket a 15 minute walk away. It's a 2 minute drive to the park entrance. Yellowstone is big so no matter where you stay outside the park you will be driving a lot if you want to see it all. That said, we found this location to work well and saw most of the park. The home is in great shape and Barbara was extremely helpful and provided extra hospitality like brownies on arrival and extra towels to swim in the Yellowstone river near some hot springs. Great stay and we'd love to visit again!
