About Karen Key Speck
We moved to Orcas Island in 1985. We rented this rental sight unseen when it was an extremely modest, one story house and lived in it for three years. When a man from Austria purchased it, he hired us to manage it as a rental. The only change he made was to change the carpeting. After about 15 years, we had the opportunity to purchase this house from him. We named it Pinecone Cabin and remodeled the downstairs and a few years later added on the second story. We decorated the house with all high quality furnishings with a pinecone theme. Folks always say the house is much larger inside than it looks. So we always smile when they and we joke about it being called a 'cabin'. We are pleased this house has come 'full circle' to us. We are very involved in the Orcas community. Here shown announcing the annual Fourth of July Eastsound Parade.

Why Karen Key Speck chose Eastsound
We have lived on Orcas Island since 1985 and always wanted to own a rental to share with other visitors.
What makes this House unique
One can enjoy a soak in the outdoor hotub. Turning off its jets, you'll hear only silence. The rental is located conveniently close to town, but is amazingly private with one immediate part-time only neighbor. The views looking north show islands, ocean, mountains and ski resort lights over 40 miles away. The weather presents an ever changing palette. Deer, eagles and raccoons are often on the property. Many have seem Orca whales and dolphins swimming by.

Beautiful waterfront property
Everything about this house was perfect. Sweeping views of the ocean, private beach, spacious bedrooms and adjoining bathrooms, beautiful furniture, laundry facilities, well-stocked. We were a party of 8 and we all loved this quiet little oasis.
A must see beautiful island and home!
The island is beautiful and the home is beautiful , what else can I say! The home is furnished with beautiful and great quality hardwood beds, bedroom sets, dining room ,living room furniture, etc. The bedding and towels are top quality. There are twice as many pillows as needed so I can't imagine anyone not finding a comfy pillow to sleep on! The place is quiet and on the waterfront facing to the north and Canada. The ocean is visible from the hot tub day or night. There's no traffic or road noise at this place! If you want it quiet you got it! There's a TV in almost every room if that's what you are in to and a closet full of DVD and Vhs movies for the family to enjoy. Acquiring this place was easy and the owner was very quick to get back to me about the reservations and arrangements. I highly recommend this place and the accommodations!
One has to be a neat picky freak to find fault about ANYTHING wrong with this property.
As owners of a cleaning company in CA serving 100s of vacation rental units, we understand the details and challenges this property manager faces before, during and after each visit. Their system is simply IMPECCABLE.
The only ways to improve the flawless presentation of this property would be asking something like:
1. Ask guests beforehand what toilet paper brand they use at home to match it.
2. Add cup holders to the wooden balcony chairs on the main level deck.
3. Keep spare 9 volt batteries for the CO monitor on the hallway.
The view from this property is FANTASTIC. The photos do not do it justice.
We'll update our review once we receive our deposit back. But so far, we will not be looking anywhere else when we plan other Orcas island visit.
Above the washer downstairs we keep extra batteries. Perhaps the spare 9volt was already applied or there? Thank you for your kind words and for visiting Orcas with us. We hope you found your time in our home rejuvenating and just they get-away you needed! Thanks for writing.

What a great house! There must be a thousand items in the pinecone motif, yet it is lovely, not kitschy. We were three generations in the house, and everyone found a spot they enjoyed. The beach is very rocky, farther and steeper than I expected, but a part of the adventure. Great views. All was as listed. The only odd part was the bunk bed room only had exits through master suite or that bathroom.
While we personally do not have a large family, it's always rewarding to hear when family comes together at our rental to enjoy an Orcas visit.
Folks seems to have fun "finding" the pinecones. It's great on a rainy day to "occupy" the little ones. LOL.
Come see us again soon. Ken and Karen Cherie L. Lindholm RE / Orcas
August on Orcas
This is a convenient location to Eastsound and Moran State Park, one of our very favorite places. There is so much to see and do on the island. The house accommodated our adult children, my wife and I very well and provided a great base. Kitchen was well appointed, the bedrooms were comfortable and the bathrooms were plenty. Spectacular views north to Sucia, Matia and Canada; we were able to see the Perseid meteor showers from the back deck. A place we would recommend highly.
Our family had a wonderful Thanksgiving at the Pinecone Cottage. We loved the location, the decor and the size of the house. It didn't hurt that we had perfect ( for late November) weather the week we were there. The views are fantastic. We could see the full moon rise and the sunset colors. Eagles flew by the windows. We loved walking down to the adjoining beach. Moran State Park is very nearby and we enjoyed several hikes there as well as seeing the cutthroat trout spawning. We also enjoyed the beach at Obstruction Pass State Park which is also close by. You are very close to downtown Eastsound which is convenient for grocery shopping and restaurants.
There were six adults and four children staying in the cottage. The bedrooms are spacious and the three older kids enjoyed having their own nook. The two year old slept in a pack n play which is provided. The kitchen is very well stocked and we cooked our Thanksgiving dinner there with just a few items we brought from home. Karen was very helpful about what was supplied in the kitchen so we knew what to bring. There are two washers and dryers, a dishwasher and three and a half bathrooms which were very convenient for 10 people. The hot tub was enjoyed by all.
My daughter recently asked my grandsons where they wanted to go for spring break and they both said they wanted to back to the Pinecone Cottage! It's a great place for all ages.
You have warmed our hearts. It is wonderful for folks to spend time with family for the holidays and even more special when that stay is on Orcas and fulfilling to all. Thank you for sharing your happy memories and do come see us again soon! K&K
Pinecone Cabin offers a game closet with many board games and puzzles for your indoor pleasure. Folks say it's fun to get away from video games, etc and interact one on one together.
