Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

From our dock, you can pontoon and fish around the legendary Manitowish chain of 10 lakes. Canoe down the Manitowish River all the way to the Turtle-Flabue Flowage. Afterward, take a swim and sit in the sun on the boathouse roof.

You can take the boat to town (Manitowish Waters), poke around the shops and get an ice cream cone. The Discovery Center has a wide range of fun and educational activities.

In the evenings, enjoy a drink on the front porch overlooking the lake. Talk with the family as you prepare dinner Later, gather round a firepit blaze, select one of the many books, take advantage of our wireless computer connection or watch television in front of the fireplace. Or, if you have any energy left, you can take the pontoon boat to the ski show or the Sunday concerts in the park.

Built by Native Americans around 1930, my grandmother purchased the house in 1937. Since then we have kept the ambiance while adding modern amenities such as electricity and running water.

Enjoy our Vilas County Up North home as my family has for over 70 years.

About Patience Rockey

I have enjoyed more than 68 summers on Rest Lake. From the woods, I gather mushrooms, blueberries, and raspberries (don't like blackberry picking because of the thorns) are among my favorite activities. Some of my favorite memories are of canoeing and camping on the local rivers - first with my parents and later with my own children.

Patience Rockey purchased this house in 1934

Why Patience Rockey chose Manitowish Waters

My grandmother purchased the property in 1934. It is has been the center of our family vacation life ever since.

What makes this house unique

It is only a short walk to the library where you can find an extensive collection of vacation reading or order a particular book. Next to the library is the Community Center host of weekly outdoor fairs and community dinners. There are tennis course and children playgrounds.

Very nice!

  • 5 of 5

We really had a great time here! We were able to bring our dog, who just loves to swim, so we ALL got what we needed. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The cabin had everything we needed and made for the perfect spot for us to decompress. Very pleased and would highly recommend to others.

Perfect house in a perfect spot!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this wonderful log home! It exceeded our expectations! The large open living area was a perfect gathering spot for the 7 adults in our group. We used the fireplace several times as well as the outdoor fire pit. Loved having a pontoon boat available......the Manitowish Waters chain was fun to explore. We boated to the Sunday night concert in the park, a short ride away. Another great feature was using the top of the boat house to relax and enjoy the lake view. Excellent sandy beach, easily the best we have ever encountered at a lake rental. So much to love about this place. It really was perfect.!

Beautiful Rustic Up North Cabin

  • 4 of 5

The only reason we rated 4 stars is a big one and we felt it's important for others to be aware that the Guest room and bunk room have only large screened windows. That made for very cold sleeping for a couple of nights and for some guests, it's just too "rustic" for their liking or comfort. Otherwise, the cabin was built with lovely vintage decor and construction and we enjoyed the boat, boathouse deck and sandy bottom lake. The water was crystal clear and the use of the boats was an amazing amenity that we took advantage of on most days. The owners are accommodating and kind and we appreciated very much having our dogs there to enjoy the swimming as well. If you are looking for an authentic "Up North" camp-like experience, this is your cabin!

Perfect for our honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5

My bride and I rented this cabin for the week following our wedding. We live in Sheboygan, WI and planned a wedding in the north woods of Wisconsin at a resort. After our time at the resort we wanted to get away from people/crowds for our honeymoon and this place was perfect. The log cabin is an original 1930s cabin but but with all necessary modern amenities. The views from the main bedroom or the porch overlooking Rest Lake are beautiful. Every morning we enjoyed coffee on the boathouse porch. We took advantage of the use of the pontoon boat to get to other lakes on this 10 lake chain of lakes. And we took the canoe out to an island for a picnic. My bride and I are also avid bicyclists and this place is perfect for a bicycling fan. There is a new blacktop bike trail that begins at the end of the road and this trail is extensive. We rode it from Manitowish Waters to Boulder Junction and then on to Sayner. Very scenic. I know the trail connects to St. Germain too, but we had reached our max at that point. The towns of Manitowish Waters and Boulder Junction are surprisingly fun. We found some great supper clubs and taverns (Little Bohemia, Blue Bayou, White Oak Grill, the Pea Patch, Aqualand Ale House, Smokeys). Aqualand has a great tap beer list and White Oak was very impressive for fine dining. There were also some great shops in Boulder Junction for keepsakes from the north woods. This place made us so comfortable and we had so many things to do that we actually went the whole week without checking our phones or e-mails. Oh, another thing that surprised me was the sandy bottom of the lake immediately in front of the cabin. Great for swimming. No seaweed. This place was great for us and I could imagine it being great for couples with kids too. The hosts were also great. They live next door to this cabin so they are available for information or help if necessary. But they also had the decency not to interrupt us during our vacation. Great people, great cabin, and great vacation.

Perfect Northwoods family vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented the 1930s log cabin for a family vacation, including our young adult children and their significant others, ages 17-30. We wanted to spend time together and have a scenic place on the water to hang out and this was a great property to do so! We truly appreciated being able to bring our little dog, too! The cabin has a great room feeling with a lot of space and charm; the 7 of us were comfortable. We used the boats every day--pontoon, fishing boat, and canoes--what a bonus! The Manitowish lake chain is gorgeous, clear water, good fishing, and not crowded! We have been to Eagle River, Minocqua and St Germain and this location is our favorite! We prepared almost all of our own meals at the cabin, used the BBQ grill, fireplace, played board games, read books, and enjoyed seeing/hearing all the wildlife including eagles and loons. We did some shopping in town, including getting ice cream, coffee shop, and went to Little Bohemia one night for dinner/fish fry. Patience and Charlie, the owners, live next door and are available if you need anything and are gracious hosts. We loved it!

Rest Lake Log Cabin - Best Kept Secret in the North Woods!

  • 5 of 5

We spent our last 2 family summer vacations at this Rest Lake Log Cabin and there is truly something for everyone: outdoor activity, complete relaxation or a combination. The log cabin (built by Indians!) is clean and homey with an updated, modern kitchen and updated comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms. There is enough space to enjoy privacy or togetherness. We stayed with another couple and our combined 4 children (ages 6-12) - everyone went home happy and refreshed. We swam, kayaked, went tubing & fishing; explored the lakes in the pontoon boat; ate lunch and shopped at the marina; enjoyed homemade ice cream in town. If you want to relax, you can read or snooze in the sun on the boathouse roof, enjoy quiet time on the porch swing, go for long walks in the shaded woods or simply drift on a float in the lake (a drink in one hand, book in the other is my favorite).

There is an assortment of activities for all ages: "Skiing Skeeters" (a truly old school skilled water skiing show), Discovery Center, flea markets, fish fries, brat food festivals. If you want "big town" amenities, a multiplex and big store shopping are just a few towns away.

In the evenings we grilled, roasted marshmallows in the outside fire pit, played board games, read and relaxed around the fireplace (there is a flat screen TV if you want it, but oddly we did not). It gets chilly at night which was refreshing coming from the humid East Coast! The adults especially enjoyed their morning coffee and evening drinks on the boathouse roof.

I recommend two local restaurants: for truly authentic Louisiana Cajun cuisine: "Blue Bayou Inn". For steak and chops: "Little Bohemia Resort" (location of the famous Dillenger gang shootout: bullet holes in the walls included!)

The log cabin owners are gracious, warm and friendly - but not intrusive. The cabin has been in their family for decades and if you are interested, they are happy to share the history of the cabin as well as the region. They were always available to offer help from operating the pontoon boat to activity recommendations.

We can't wait to return and highly recommend this property - it is the best kept secret in the North Woods!
