About The Owner

I was born and raised near Qualicum on Vancouver Island and now chose to make my home here. I enjoy skiing, hiking, canoeing, and cycling. These are activities that I can pursue here and that makes living here a paradise. I also enjoy traveling afar and meeting people that have interesting stories to tell.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 2004

Why The Owner chose Vancouver Island

I bought this cabin because it offered a peaceful, relaxing, and private escape while still being close to ammenities that make life comfortable.

What makes this cabin unique

The greatest benefit of staying here is the tranquility of the area. The beach is incredibly private and often there is not another soul to be seen - even in the summer. The wildlife viewing is also amazing. Eagles are plentiful from February until early July and I have seen up to two dozen at one time on the beach during the spring herring season. Seals enjoy playing off the shore year round and you can frequently hear their playful barking.

Also nearby are lakes and rivers, great hiking trails, and even Mt Washington Ski Resort which frequently boasts of having the greatest amount of snow of any resort in the world!

All you could wish for

In June 09 our family (2 adults and a 5 year old) spend 6 glorious days at this great cabin.

Where to begin. First the property; a very spacious and comfortable cabin with a breathtaking view from the sitting room & garden across the sound with the rockies in the back. With bald eagles crossing your view regularly. From the garden via a steep woodland trail you walk down towards the beach. Once your reach the bottom of the trail you will be greeted by harbour seals basking in the morning sun and who will get closer to take a view of you.

Bald eagles (at one time 15 in one sweeping view) fishing. And the tide pools gave us and our sun hours of exploration and fun.

It is an ideal jumping off point for, of course, the town of Qualicum which with its packed-sand beach and fun centre is a great place for a coffee, lunch or dinner. Didn't try this time but the golfcourse that runs through town looks appealing. Cathedral Grove is a short and beatiful drive. There is a swimming lake not 10km away and Tofino is a magnificent 2,5 hour not to be missed drive away. For us it was the perfect start to our Vancouver Island stay from which we went on to Telegraph Cove and the Northern part of Vancouver Island. On the way back we made sure to take a detour in to Qualicum just to have a last minute second taste of the place

I write with a bit of heartache and know I will be back. So if you are looking for seclusion and privacy, in your face beauty of nature, a very friendly owner, a comfortable cabin and a very pleasant town nearby this is it.

Nice view, but unfairly mislead.

  • 1 of 5

We were looking forward to this 'private' cottage with the impressive view, an escape from the city. The view is in fact stunning.

However, there are a few surprises that potential renters should know about that are not stated in the listing.

1. This is not private or secluded. What the pictures don't show is a fence recently constructed down the right hand side of the property to subdivide the lot. There is another smaller cottage on the lot where someone lives.

If you are looking for privacy like we were, not having to consider noise our children make or other people's privacy, this is not it.

We felt misled. We live in a big, densely populated city. We paid a lot of money for our holiday to have a proper escape.

The owners response when we raised this was 'you are welcomed to leave' and 'no one else has mentioned this' therefore these are legitimate claims. He seemed more interested in getting his money vs genuinely taking responsibility for his listing.

As it was high season there weren't any options to go elsewhere. We are a family with 3 children, we could have spent some of our holiday time trying to find something else, pack up and move on, we decided overall, it was easier to stick it out and be able to see our friends in the area vs move on. It was also a financial decision as we weren't going to get any money back from this property, we couldn't afford to pay twice.

2. The water has high iron content so it both looks yellow and has a strong unpleasant smell. Drinking water is provided. There is a washing machine and dryer at the cottage but the water will stain your clothes - this is written in a small very worn note above the dryer not readily noticeable as its a very narrow space to get into to use the washing machine and dryer. This is important enough information potential renters should know about especially if you like to have a bath before bed. Not possible.

The choice is yours. Look to recent reviews.

Based on our experience is the view does not justify the price and certainly not how our genuine concerns were treated.

Beautiful house with amazing view

  • 5 of 5

After one day our children asked if we could stay here forever. Why? Running around the house, the beach with its little crabs and seals watching you while you stroll the vast and practically private shore. The views are amazing.

Spacious, very well stocked and very friendly and courteous hosts. We drove to the Pacific Rim NP and went up to Telegraph Cove for whale, orca and dolphin viewing. There are lots of trails and swimming lakes to find and it is a perfect location for island viewing. We had a fabulous time in this house and unfortunately for our kids (and us) lasted only a week after we've moved on to Vancouver city. Highly recommended.

A Week of Tranquility and Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week here. The location of the cabin is very private but still convenient to many shops and destinations in the area so it was perfect for a week of relaxation. The cabin is great, the pictures on the listing do not do it justice as Malcolm and Maria have made several changes since the pictures were taken. The kitchen was well equipped and there is a great bbq outside. The views from the cabin are just awaking. The yard was great for the dogs to play frisbee. It was great to have a private beach area to just go down and enjoy watching the seals. What a great place!!!

Would recommend

  • 4 of 5

Our family of four stayed for a week and really enjoyed ourselves. The property was very clean and neat, had everything we needed and nothing we didn't. Malcolm was a pleasure to deal with and very helpful - he put lots of thought into how to create a welcoming space, and has succeeded! The walk down to the beach was challenging for our 3-yr old, but totally do-able and very rewarding. Bring rubber boots to really explore this magnificent treasure! The only thing we didn't love is the tap water in the cottage. Drinking water is provided, and the tap water is safe but has a high concentration of iron so carries a strong odour and colour (distracting in a bath!). If these kind of things trouble you, it's good to know about in advance. Can't be helped and no harm caused, just a good thing to know. Aside from that, all perfect and I would recommend the cabin to anyone looking for a simple getaway and a break from hustle & bustle. We will enjoy the memories for a long time!
