Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

When we began looking for a quiet getaway in the mountains of Western North Carolina, we came upon the sweet community of The Hidden McMillan Valley. We felt like we had stepped back in time with kind people and quiet, relaxed living. You will start with a scenic drive through the apple country of Edneyville and Hendersonville, drive up the mountain with views, then wind down to The Hidden McMillan Valley. 'Solitude' is nestled between two streams and has a country chapel across the way. In the summer months, it offers Sunday morning services and sometimes potluck lunches.

The screened-in porch runs the length of the house and is complete with wicker chairs, rockers, a love seat and hammock. It also has a wrought iron table and chairs for outdoor dining. As you sit out, you will hear the birds, nature, and the rushing of the water. If it is cool, or just for ambiance, you can build yourself a nice fire in the large brick fireplace. The wood is already chopped and stacked on the porch for you.

One of the perks of where we are located is that you can get to so many places in such a short time. We are a little over an hour from Spartanburg, SC. and about 2 hours from Charlotte. We are 20 minutes from downtown Hendersonville with its unique shops and restaurants. We are only 20 minutes from Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. We are also 35-40 minutes from Asheville with all its historical and cultural influence. Close by is the Blue Ridge Parkway, waterfalls and hiking, the Flat Rock Playhouse, Brevard Music Center, Pisgah National Forest, Carl Sandburg's home, The Biltmore House, and the Grove Park Inn to name a few. So, you can find plenty to do or just enjoy the solitude!

About Terri G Allsbrook

Bob and Terri Allsbrook, owners since 2008. We both grew up in N.C, went to college in the mountains of N.C, but had been living in S.C. for 22 years. We wanted a place to retreat to back in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains...'Solitude' was our answer to that dream.

Terri G Allsbrook purchased this house in 2008

Why Terri G Allsbrook chose Hendersonville

This photo is taken at 'The Edge of the World', which is one of the prettiest panoramic views of the mountains you will ever see! It is only a few minutes drive and then a short hike to get there from Solitude.

Perfect!

The location was perfect. It was a great spot to relax for a couple of days. I only wish we had had more time to do some of the hiking and exploring around the house. Thank you!

Comfortable and well stocked

  • 4 of 5

The house is comfortable and well stocked (plenty of wine glasses -- YAY). It is also conveniently located near a variety of mountain attractions. On the flip side, I was hoping for a view of the mountains which I didn't get except for driving to the house. Dinner on the porch every night was amazing. It would be nice if the house had a dishwasher.

My daughters loved the bedrooms with the Jack-and-Jill (or Jill-and-Jill) bathroom. However, I didn't realize that the master bathroom was not located in the master bedroom.

The owner was highly responsive to questions that we had regarding the gas grill and trash removal.

One more thing -- follow the owner's directions to the house. The GPS directions in and out of the house are not accurate unless your car has wings.

Depends on what you are looking for....

  • 1 of 5

So my sister’s and I rented this VRBO on May 31 to June 4, 2017. When we pulled up to the house it was late and we were greeted by a dirty dog barking at our car doors. We made our way to the back door and entered. There, sitting by the back door were two laundry baskets full of laundered or dirty clothes. We moved them to the pantry with curtains. We then noticed that none of us had cell phone service and wouldn't for our whole stay there. We found the freezer and refrigerator filled with outdated ice cream, frozen pizzas, and any and all condiments you could ever imagine. We went to bake the food we had brought and found two dirty pizza pans in the oven with food on them! Then there was a knock at the back door. Now remember, this is about 11:00 p.m. We said who's there and she said it's the neighbor! We let her in and she said that the laundry baskets of clothes were hers and still had more to get out of the dryer. OK. Strange. The place was fine but it didn’t have the view that was described to us and it was too far away from everything. They also had a large dehumidifier running in the living room yet the place was damp and humid. All the bath towels smelled of mildew. And, to top it off, we were charged $20 for a spot on one of the comforters. When they questioned us about it we explained that we didn’t even use the comforters. Too hot! Cleaning lady was wrong!

Owner's Response: We regret these renters' frustrations, but I will address each thing mentioned. First, I can hardly control someone else's dogs. Secondly, we had renters with a large group who had just left that day. My cleaning lady was working fast and furiously to try and get it all done for this next group. She unfortunately forgot she had left some baskets still there and forgot to check the stove and/or refrigerator. (Not very often that someone would leave uneaten food on a pan in your stove). Our VRBO site very clearly states that if you have AT&T, we can add your number to have cell service, but if you are with another company, you must go to the top of the hill. The site shows pictures of nearby sights but never says there is a "view". We are 20 min. from Hendersonville and 20 from Chimney Rock, which is also on our website. It is quiet and relaxing, but there is a neighborhood there. We are in the mountains; it is very rainy and humid. We had 4 inches of rain that week alone. We have a dehumidifier that runs and drains outside the house. When these renters left, there was a large stain on a comforter that wasn't there before, and I had to have it dry cleaned, hence the $20. They denied making the spot, but I had to go by what my cleaning lady said, my hands were tied. Please see ALL the other reviews with many happy renters!!

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was cozy. Terri was very helpful in answering & assisting us in all our needs. I spent my summers here as a kid (my grandparents owned a cabin here) It was bittersweet seeing my kids do the things I use to do. Thanks to Mrs Gatt for letting us revisit our old home also. My boyfriend proposed in front of the chapel where I spent many Sunday summer mornings with my grandparents. This trip was perfect & my kids say when they get older they would like to carry on this tradition.

We drove around the area to see different towns, loved Hendersonville and Chimney Rock. Convent location to dining and shopping. My first time in that area. Will definitely go back for Apple season.
