This will be our fifth time renting our property. Last year we chose to just stay home and enjoy it ourselves. We rent ONLY for the full month of August so that we can go someplace wonderful too. Each time we return home, we are taken again by its beauty. And, each July as we lounge on the deck by the pool we wonder why we are leaving.
The pool is fabulous. It is heated and surrounded by a large deck. Our property is wooded with lots of hardwood trees and rhododendron so you can find a spot of shade or sun anytime of the day on the deck. There are cushioned lounge chairs, an outdoor table with six cushioned chairs and umbrella, various other seating options, and tables to hold snacks or burgers you cooked on the gas grill.
Upstairs is the master bedroom with adjoining bath, television, and king size bed. The two other bedrooms each have queen beds and the fourth room is a study/computer roo. It is outfitted with a cable connected computer, (though we also have wifi), a fax machine, scanner, and two line phone. There is a sofa for a child or teen to sleep on and we do have a few air mattresses we use for camping that you could use.
Downstairs is the large living room with fireplace, tv, sound system (btw, speakers are on the deck too), and dining room. These rooms can be made more private by closing the French doors if the kids are playing in the family room and adults want some quiet time. The family room does have the door out to the pool. It has a 42 inch flat screen tv and comfortable seating. The kitchen is bright and sunny and fully outfitted and the dinette table opens to seat 10-12.
There are two bicycles in the shed that you can use and also some games such as horseshoes. We are only a five minute walk from the beach or Horton's Point Lighthouse and there's a lovely pond right at the corner. Our house is on a designated scenic route that is popular with bicyclists.
Because we live here all year round, we have just about anything you need here. Actually all you really need to bring are your clothes and even then we leave you some items such as beach hats, jackets if it gets chilly, umbrellas, etc. If you want, we will empty the pantry, but so far all our guests are delighted that spices, condiments, and dried goods are there. All paper products are supplied as well. A cleaning woman comes in once a week at no additional charge and the pool is also maintained.
We have lived here for 36 years and raised our two children here and just love it. You wake up to the birds and go to sleep with the sound of katy-dids. On sunny days you'll love the pool, and on balmy evenings you'll watch sunsets over LI Sound. Rainy days can be spent at wineries or strolling the shops in Greenport or Tanger Outlets. It is a wonderful magical place and you will love spending August here
Three of the five families who have rented our home have loved the area so much they bought homes within miles of us. We are nearing our 70's and we rent so that we can travel to some amazing places ourselves, but each July we wonder why we are leaving! It is a comfortable, lovely home as the photos will show. If your family is a good fit with it, you dont' have to bring anything but your clothing. Unless you ask, I leave all spices, staples, first aid things, even Excedrin in the cabinets. We supply all paper products and the woman who has worked for us for 13 years comes in once a week to clean, wash bath towels and change sheets. The pool and lawn are maintained. We are well known in our community by store owners, tradesmen, and many restaurant owners.There is not much we can't tell you about Southold. We have Roku with Netflix, wifi, fax machine, wide screen tv in family room and a cd system with speakers outside on the deck. Whether you like sun or shade, it is here. Though most of our flowers bloom in spring and early summer, there are pots of perennials on the deck which is fenced in with access through the family room. During the summer, we live on the deck and either barbecue or cook up some lobsters. Somehow we have been lucky and have few mosquitoes except right at dusk. After over forty years, I still come home and think how lucky we are to have such a perfectly lovely place. It is magical.

Children love this house especially for the pool. If you have very young children, you should know there is no way to keep a child from the pool if you are on the deck. We do not have an alarm if a child falls in. As always, you can not leave kids unattended by a pool....moreless

We ask a security deposit of $2,000 which will be returned promptly to you if no damage. We expect our home to be treated with respect but we are not petty people. If you have a dog and it does damage, you will be responsible the same way you would be if you did the damage yourself. It is just being courteous to all involved. We require 1/2 at signing, non refundable unless cancelled by May 1. The remainder is due by July 15. If the electricity is on par with normal usage, it is included; it is is exorbitant, you will have to pay difference. We fill the gas tank (550 gallons) for pool heater at start of lease. The cost of gas used will be deducted from your security deposit.

Wineries are a major attraction. North Fork Wine Countryis recognized world wide as a producer of fine wines. The wineries have many events including music, festivals, art shows and tours. The dual shores of LI Sound and Peconic Bay allow for swimming, boating, fishing and water sports and there are many inlets to explore with kayaks that are availabe for rental. Farm stands abound offering the fresh produce grown locally. Charming sea side towns have restaurants and boutique shopping. High speed ferry from Orient to casinos in Connecticut. This is a unique corner of the world. A google search of North Fork Wine Country will give you all sorts of information and photographs. The North Fork is an ideal spot to just relax, bicycle, watch sunsets, play with your kids, go out to dinner or have take out fresh seafood from Southold Fish Market! There are numerous events throughout the year including concerts, festivals, parades, and cruises. So beautiful is our town that three of the five families who have rented our house have bought homes here!

About the owner: Jay is an attorney who says he will never retire. I do mostly volunteer work for both my church and for Mission to Heal, a medical mission team group. We live quiet but busy lives and enjoy being outside most. We chose to rent our house so that we could do some amazing trips such as hiking in Switzerland, rafting in the Pacific Northwest, and exploring the national parks. We have two grown daughters who live on the west coast, one in Southern California and one completing medical residency in Seattle this summer. After living here for over 40 years, we are well known within the town. It is great to know the cashiers in the local grocery store by name, know the owners of the pharmacy since they were children, and on occassion even have a postal worker deliver to our home a special package he knew we were awaiting. Once the weather turns warm, I rarely drive but prefer to bike to town for all errands. I have a bike with two baskets so I can load up with groceries, fresh fish, fresh corn on the cob, and in necessary, drug store needs. My gym is right up the road and I remember when my personal trainer was born and when the owner was in kindergarten with my daughter. Jay served on town board many years ago as both town councilman and town attorney. We now have a little dog that we took from our daughter in California when her living circumstancess changed. He was already a rescue dog so he had had a rough life but he is loving this country living. For many years we rode horses and our girls showed extensively. There are numerous stables in the area if you are interested. So, we are nice people who are well known and we think well liked!
Why the Owner Chose Southold, NY, USA:
This house is our first home we built when my husband finished law school. We chose the property as it reminded us of where we both grew up in Wading River which was even then building up. It is just idlyllic here with the hard wood trees, ponds, beaches and quiet roads. We know it is spring when we hear the spring peepers at the pond and we know it is summer when we hear the katy dids at night. This home has fit us at all stages of our lives as it was a great place to raise a family and is now a great place to grow older. Southold is a step back in time.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Perhaps my favorite part of the day is late afternoon when I go outside for a swim by myself in the pool. I float on my back and can see the sky rimmed by trees and often I see an osprey overhead. It is so quiet. Early in the morning, I hear birds waking up and in the evening, I listen to the spring peepers from the pond right past our house.Stars are visible in the dark skies at night.I do enjoy bicycling to town for my groceries, and on weekends my husband I will sometimes bike to a winery for a picnic and to hear music. You really have to come to the North Fork to understand its magic. I am so glad it is my home and you will be very happy to make it yours for a month. Though either a short ferry ride or drive away, this is NOT the Hamptons. It is far quieter with limited night life (though plenty of restaurants and pubs) The NY Times has written this area up often and has actually tagged it 'The Un-Hamptons' for its lack of pretentiousness, traffic, and people watchers and for its quiet and unspoiled beauty, charm, and beautiful coasts. We do not mind people having guests to visit but this is definitely not a groupie house. It is our home.
