About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

The GarajMahal is a beautiful apartment above a garage (built in 2009) in Bozeman's most traditional 'Norman Rockwell' neighborhood, just one and a half blocks from Bozeman's lively Main Street. It's fully furnished with an eclectic collection from the owner's overseas adventures along with all the practical necessities. There are at least 20 restaurants within easy walking distance ranging from the classic Western Cafe (you'll see authentic ranchers having morning coffee) to the mothership of Montana's MacKenzie River Pizza 'chain' to the ever popular Montana Aleworks (restaurant, bar, pool tables) in a restored freight depot. Four blocks from the annual Sweet Pea Festival of the Arts and all the parades and music fests that happen all summer on Main Street. Four blocks to the library (free computers available) and two blocks to a small but full service super market. To remind us of our agricultural heritage, there are even two grain elevators within three blocks.

Bozeman's growing Main Street to the Mountains trail system is five blocks away, as is the city's most popular sledding hill. Walk to the city swimming pool where weekly band concerts take place in summer. Walk (or take a short drive) to the County Fairgrounds. Our free Streamline Bus Service stops two blocks away. It's an easy drive to Bridger Bowl ski area or you can take the bus. Parking is on the street, but there's room in the garage to store skis or bikes.

About Marjorie Smith

I grew up in Bozeman, graduated from high school here, attended college here, and then went away for a couple of decades, working as a journalist and a U.S. Foreign Service officer. I returned convinced that Bozeman really is the best corner of Montana which really is the Last Best Place. I'm a freelance writer and editor. Many residents have been attracted to Bozeman because it has some of the most beautiful, accessible scenery in the U.S., but we also have a a lively theatre community, a remarkable symphony orchestra, and a 38-year-old highly respected opera company! And during the school year, there are always performances in various genres happening on the campus of Montana State University.

Marjorie Smith purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Marjorie Smith chose Yellowstone Country

When the time came to rebuild my ancient, decrepit garage, I decided to include an apartment upstairs, to help pay for the construction. When I saw how bright and sunny it was going to be and how wonderful all the roof angles were I decided to share my prime downtown location with vacationers rather than turn it over to a long term renter. At least I get to go into the apartment from time to time to change the sheets!

What makes this apartment unique

Living here I get to indulge my love for cities at the same time I'm within minutes of being in my beloved mountains. I'm exactly where I want to be -- and I'm willing to share it with visitors.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What an honor to be your first guests in this wonderful space! Apart from the obvious Bozeman benefits (being with family!!) our favorite neighborhood activities: -- breakfast at the Western Cafe -- Sandwiches and beer at the Pickle Barrel/Rockin' R -- Pizza at Mackenzie River -- Dinner at Aleworks -- Shopping on Main Street (our latest discoveries: The Co-op, the fish market, and Vino per Tutti) Then there's the great running (for people and dogs) just outside the door: --Out Wallace to the trails that go around the pond --Up Pete's Hill and along the ridge --Out past Bogert Park along the rail-to-trail We look forward to many happy visits in all seasons!

Great Stay at the Garaj Mahal

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the Garaj Mahal on a visit to MSU's parent weekend. Three of us stayed, and the combo of bedroom and foldout couch worked well. It was really nice to have a place to hang out with our kids and watch a movie and celebrate a birthday--much better than a hotel room. And being able to walk downtown and even to campus was great. Marjorie was a great hostess, and nicely let us use her backyard and hose to clean off a couple of very muddy bikes (snowline was a little lower than expected...) All in all a great stay. I can imagine we'll use it again!

Bozeman Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Marjorie Smith's one bedroom garage apartment for two weeks in late August and early September. We had a wonderful time and Marjorie was the perfect host. She was available if need be and otherwise left us on our own. The apartment is only one block off Main Street and therefore an easy walk to shops and restaurants. The apartment was comfortable, nicely furnished, decorated tastefully and the full kitchen had everything we needed. Simply put, a five star experience. Dick & Becky Rogers -- Kissimmee, Florida.

the garaj Mahal was a perfect apartment for our visit to Bozeman. It is wonderfully hosted; spotlessly clean and tidy; wonderfully furnished; handy to the Main Street shops and restaurants; has parking; excellent internet and cable TV; and a fully equipped kitchen. We loved it!

Terrific place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

If you want a beautiful, place to stay in a small town atmosphere, but still close (1 to1 1/2 hours) from Yellowstone, then this is the perfect place. Marge's "garage mahal" is beautiful and peaceful. It is only 2 blocks from Main Street in Boseman. The town is so friendly and nice. Also it is real convienent to Yellowstone. Plus Marge makes you feel right at home. She is so helpful. Would love to go back.
