About Sharon Cagley
Our family considers Villa Paradise our second home and the community of Nuevo Arenal our extended family. Our children consider our friends in the area as their 'Tias', 'Tios' and 'Primas' (aunts, uncles and cousins). Our father, the late Bob Case, arrived in Nuevo Arenal with a vision to build a beautiful home that his children, grand children and great-great grandchildren could enjoy. Michelle (our friend and caretaker), Lidieth (our fabulous cook), Vilma (our wonderful housekeeper) and Alex (our stable and grounds keeper) all have worked with us for almost 20 years. We have created a lot of memories in our home and hope you and your families will do the same.
Sharon Cagley purchased this Villa in 1990
Why Sharon Cagley chose Cantón Tilarán
This property is perfect for those that want plenty of space to relax; those that enjoy magnificent sunset views over a lake; or those that enjoy horses. This property is perfectly located as it offers the close convenience to Nuevo Arenal for groceries, restaurants, ATM, etc.. but is only 45 minutes from the adventures that await you in the La Fortuna area. Additionally it is only 2 miles from one of the best restaurants in all of Costa Rica - The Gingerbread.
What makes this Villa unique
Villa Paradise is a wonderful and safe rental home that you can return from your excursions and enjoy a dip in your own private pool or hot tub, or enjoy a sunset drink overlooking Lake Arenal! Our long term connections with the community of Arenal allow us to provide you with up to date information regarding local fiestas, the best restaurants, and exciting excursions. Michelle, our caretaker, can make transportation arrangements as well as reservations for local excursions. Our home is a wonderful place to celebrate a family reunion or a vacation for multiple families. We have room enough for everyone with over 6000 sq. feet. We have had many guests comment that they really did not have to leave our property to enjoy the wildlife of numerous species of birds, butterflies, and monkeys! Most mornings the howler monkeys will serve as your alarm clock! Please come and enjoy...you will leave well rested and with the feeling that you experienced the 'true Costa Rica'...Pura Vida!!

Great Family Vacation Spot.
Our family of 8 spent five days here over New Years. What a beautiful home, with breathtaking views, comfy beds, many bathrooms, great gathering spaces, and spectacular breakfasts prepared by Gisella every morning. The fresh pineapple was the best. Michelle, a neighbor, was most helpful in identifying local markets, restaurants and points of interest. And Sharon, the owner, contributed many thoughtful suggestions which enhanced our experience. We did not ride the horses because we had local excursions planned each day. Highlights included the Mistico Hanging Bridges, Baldi Hot Springs, and Balsa River rafting (our favorite). The occasional showers every day did not dampen our spirits or our plans. The 2 mile drive to the house from the main road was one of the bumpiest this 74 year old has ever experienced, but the destination was so worth the journey. A+++
July 2016 - Family Vacation
My wife and I and four teenage children loved this property. The setting is breathtaking, with views of the volcano and lake. Very nicely landscaped, with many species of birds visiting. Viewing the sun setting over the lake from the 2nd floor veranda hammock is an ABSOLUTE MUST! Large rooms with great views provided plenty of space for everyone's needs. We could comfortably gather as a group, or retreat to one's own space. The on-site WIFI easily powered all of our devices, and kept the teens happy. Along with the pool table, awesome large swimming pool and hot tub. Great for unwinding after a day of adventure. The property is conveniently located- a short trip (5 min.) to town for shopping and eating out if you desire (although the on-property kitchen is large and well-equipped to prepare anything if you choose). A freshly made, hot breakfast was provided each day- a great treat that allowed us to be into the day's events quickly each morning. A short drive (less than an hour) to numerous destinations like canyoning, zip-lining, hot springs, volcano. Michelle was very helpful in setting us up with reservations for adventure outings and dinner- in several cases she managed to get deals better than published rates. Alex was great, and led the daily horseback rides through the countryside, pointing out the toucan nests as we went! Highly recommend for groups and families.
June 2016 Summer Vacation
We arrived at the property to find it manicured with thick grass, beautiful blooming flowers and mature trees. Once inside the home it was clean, comfortable and inviting. This was a family reunion (4 couples) and there was more than enough room for all of us to have our own space, yet still have enough large common areas to "hang out" with room to spare. Anyone who appreciates a pool will fall in love with this one! It is huge, warm and what a view. There is also a veranda off of the 2nd floor with an AMAZING view of the lake. We could see the volcano off in the distance too, while the serenade of parrots played out in the palm trees. During our stay, we went into nearby towns for fantastic family style dining at many different restaurants, all of which offered tons of food at better than U.S. pricing. Adding to other previous guest's comments, don't miss the fishing trips or ATV rides either. We try to avoid commercial hotels, always preferring to feel like it's "our home" and this was the perfect fit for us. Alex answered tons of questions (being a local) and really made the stay exceptional. Just a week was definitely not enough time for us to take it all in. We're already planning (and training) for our next trip, when we are going to hike up the volcano!
Disappoint and In serious need of updating
From the description we expected a Luxury Home. While it is a fantastic piece of property and very pretty from the outside, the details on the inside were disappointing. Because the weather was so bad - super windy and raining - we ended up staying in more than venturing out.
1) The TV’s:
a) We couldn’t find the remotes to ether DVD player in either TV room. So we had to change the music player hook up to be the DVD player so the kids could watch movies.
b) The remote in the Den for TV doesn’t work. And the remote for the DVD player is completely missing.
c) The TV’s need to be updated and hooked up to cable. With the weather being so horrible, no one wanted to go outside, and we had to pile in one room to watch the movies.
2) The linens were too small for the beds. The sheets and blankets didn’t cover 2 of us in the same bed.
4) The downstairs half bath toilet isn’t working. It takes too long to fill and doesn’t flush properly.
5) The shower heads need to be changed. We had to take them down to shower, because there wasn’t enough pressure to wash our hair. The showers were too difficult to get in and out of. My 93 year old father couldn’t bathe at all. I would suggest updating the bathrooms. The listing said there were hair dryers. We could't find one.
6) The wireless modem shuts off around 10pm. We resorted to watching movies on our laptops because the TV’s were so bad, but couldn’t even do that after 10.
7) We went down to the picturesque barn to check out the horses only to discover it is a big junk storage place. How disappointing. The stalls were all filled with crap. And while the horseback ride was lots of fun and Alex was great, the horses need to be shod.
8) The front door won’t open from the outside.
9) And you better have an SUV to get to and from the property because the roads are pretty rough. While they don't really have any control over that, it is something that should be pointed out.
In short, this place could be absolutely AMAZING with a little love. If you look at the other VRBO’s in the area, there may be a reason it was the last one available during the busiest time of the year. It’s the little details that make the biggest difference. And these may seem nitpicky, but they absolutely make a big impact on comfort.
We are pleased that you apparently agree that we have a fantastic piece of property. It is unfortunate that it rained most of the time that you were there. We are sure that we told you that we have only owned the property for about a year an a half. As a matter of fact we had owned it just about a year when you contacted us at the end of the summer for a booking around the New Year. We also told you that we are upgrading the home. We will attempt to address your concerns but wonder why you did not use the services of Alex our resident caretaker who actually lives on site with his wife and has for 18 years. He would certainly know where parts for the TVs were and how to make the front door function. You were the 3rd guest in a row over the holidays and some things might have been misplaced but he should have been able to help you find them. Regarding your numbered concerns. Item 1. We stayed in the house for over 3 months this year and did not have any issues with the TVs. We do have Sky TV which is the local equivalent of cable and there should not have been any issues that Alex could not fix. Item 2. We just replaced the beds in two of the bedrooms and there should have been ample bedding. Apparently we have some issues with training of our staff regarding making up the beds and we are starting that this week. Item 4. Again if there was a problem with the half bath toilet, Alex should have been able to resolve it. Item 5. We are not aware of any problem with the shower heads. We just replaced most of them. Again Alex should have been contacted. There were at least 2 hairdryers in the house. Item 6. The Internet does not shut off at 10 pm unless there was a weather issue. It is DSL from the phone company and usually requires only rebooting if there is a problem. Item 7. We do not understand your concern about how we use our barn. The horses have a shelter and have never been in the barn. Actually Alex and his wife have a nice apartment on the upper level of the barn. Item 8. The front door has been as it is for over 25 years and has never been an issue. Most folks use the door from the carport in to the kitchen to enter the house. Item 9. We agree that the 1.8 Kilometer government road from Arenal is sometimes rough. A planned upgrade is supposed to start this week.
Thank you for your comments. We feel certain that if it had not been raining, your experience would have been much different.
Absolutely Beautiful!! Highly recommend
My family of 5 absolutely loved this house. We spent a few days here and it was not enough time to enjoy this fantastic house. Having a breakfast ready every morning is a treat and the views are breathtaking. You could relax all day at the house or spend the day exploring and come back to enjoy the house at night, the kids loved the pool table. Alex was fantastic we went riding every morning around the house and neighboring Macadamia nut farm (Thank you Michelle!), plenty of great things to see, Toucan, birds and monkeys. A must stay. Great for families or several couples.
This was our 2nd trip to Costa Rica, but this time we brought along my mother in law (77 years old) and two boys (2 years old and 18 years old). The property was amazing with fantastically decorated rooms and unbelievable views. Candace was very helpful when working with us to plan the perfect experience for our family. Velma greeted us each morning with a fantastic breakfast and steaming hot coffee. Alex took us on horseback rides through the rainforest which included the Macadamia Nut Farm. This house was built to provide for large families or groups, but cozy enough for our party of 5. This home is the perfect vacation spot for anyone wishing to experience Costa Rica since it is so convenient to Nuevo Arenal (my most favorite town in Costa Rica!!!), zip line adventures, Arenal Hanging Bridges, Eco Termales, ect. We had a fantastic time!!! :)
Villa Paradise is perfectly situated between Nuevo Arenal (for local conveniences such as grocery stores, restaurants, and an ATM), and the La Fortuna area which one can find many adventures.
