Kolohala Studio Great Views! Short Walk to Snorkeling Beach

Bedrooms 1
Property type studio
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Kolohala Studio, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Kolohala studio is a peaceful place to enjoy your tropical vacation. Great for honeymooners! It is on a side dirt road, not on the main highway. It borders a beautiful meadow with horses and cows. You can walk to the beach in about three to five minutes, depending on how fast you walk.

The Kolohala Studio is a downstairs studio. The upstairs part of the house is not a rental, it is left empty for when the owner is visiting the island. The owner is a single man in his 70's that comes and goes for a week or two here and there throughout the year. Which is not a big deal when he is there, as he is quiet as a mouse. He respects the privacy of the guests and likes his own privacy too. The studio has it's own separate entrance.

There are maintenance people (gardeners, cleaners for upstairs, etc) that may come to do upkeep from time to time. It is a beautifully landscaped yard, with tropical plants and orchids, and other flowers. The studio has been remodeled and upgraded and is very clean and comfortable.

It has a complete kitchenette with 2 burner hotplate (no oven), microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, BBQ, and all dishes and utensils as well. There is a queen size bed, futon couch, DVD player, cable TV, wireless internet access, full bath with tub & deluxe ceiling mounted rain shower, tropical outdoor shower, and use of laundry room. There are beautiful granite counters in the bathroom and the kitchen. This house is energy efficient with 100% solar water heating.

Sleeps 2 maximum.

This is a legal vacation rental Permit # TVNR 5150. 24/7 emergency contact Angela 808 212-6468.

Kolohala Studio in June

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at the Kolohala Studio in Haena for 8 nights in June. It was always a welcoming and comfortable place to stay at the end of the our days of hiking and snorkeling on the north side of the island. We ate breakfasts, ate our dinners, and had drinks on the quiet back patio looking out onto the mountains and field of horses. Blood pressure dropped; it felt as if you had Haena all to yourself. The studio was very clean, spacious, and had all the accommodations we needed. There were times we were so comfortable we had to remind ourselves we should get up and go do something outside the property because our time (of course) was limited and we wanted to experience as much as we could. Whether we took a left at the end of Alamihi Drive to go the short distance to Tunnels Beach, Kee Beach, or the Kalalau Trail...or whether we took a right to venture into Hanalei or Kilauea, the location of Kolohala is perfect. We felt we had all of what the north side of Kauai had to offer at our disposal. Joe, the groundskeeper, was around a little bit to prune some of the vegetation. He offered some great insight on the island and pointed out a few places to check out. The building and grounds were beautifully kept by him and his wife. If you are looking for a tranquil, private place to stay on the north side, this place is for you. It is a great value for the money, and I hope it stays that way, because people like my wife and I appreciate it. We didn't want a "resort" experience, plus we simply can't afford that. We wanted to blend in, respect and understand some of the lifestyles of the locals, and get a little taste of what "old Hawaii" might be like. We got it. And we felt very sad when we had to leave. Hopefully, we will get an opportunity to come back and pick up where we left off. I would stay here again if the chance were to surface. Aloha!

Idyllic Spot on the North Shore

  • 5 of 5

This was my third time staying in Kolohala, so I already knew I could expect a quiet, comfortable place to stay. It is in my favorite part of the island, and I loved being a few minutes from Ke'e or Tunnels.

I liked going to the art/coffee shop at Hanalei Colony Resort each day for some Kona coffee. There is entertainment there, too, but we were too happy in our little studio to want to go.

For a small space, the studio has everything you will need. I could easily stay there a week or more. We had a grilled fish meal each night, and enjoyed the patio under those amazing stars The bed is so comfortable and there is a big fan that is nice for some air and for white noise. The kitchen is well equipped, and had all we needed. The only thing I'd add would be a table outside. We just used the small ones. The outdoor shower is nice, bordered in flowers and wonderful hot water.

The carport and laundry room are nice, as well as the view of the mountains and the lime tree . I highly recommend Kolohala Studio for a romantic, peaceful spot on the North Shore for a reasonable price. .

Quiet & peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at the Kolohala Studio and enjoyed our time very much. The studio has everything you need. The backyard is right up against a large field with cows and horses. It's very serene and relaxing. We had a great time and felt like we had our own home away from home on vacation.

North Shore = Best Shore

  • 5 of 5

The studio is very clean and located on a quiet, private, gated property with nice landscaping. You are only minutes from the world famous Kalalau trail, Tunnels Beach, and Hanalei Bay. We explored all other areas of the island and the north shore is by far the best. Tunnels beach has some of the clearest water you will ever see and there aren't nearly as many people on the north shore as what you will find on the south and east shores. From the studio you can make a quick day trip on the Kalalau trail to the amazing Hanakapai'ai Falls or if you're up for it, get a permit and do the entire Kalalau trail. We were unable to get a permit, so plan way ahead. We received our security deposit in full very quickly after leaving and we would definitely come back here again and we recommend it to travelers of all ages (We were 26 and 29 at the time of our trip).

My husband and I loved the studio. Sitting in the back yard watching the cute cows, horses and birds was a treat. It was very private and homey. A great base from which to go hiking, beaching, kayaking shopping ect on the North Shore. A little bit bigger coffee maker is the only item I would address...other than that it was the perfect place!

Kolohala - Wet and Unsafe Studio

  • 1 of 5

This is a very unfortunate review to have to write. All in all this has been a real nightmare from the moment we arrived. I booked this studio 6 months in advance of my best friends wedding in Hanalei. The owner insists that payment be in the form of a check and be mailed or fedex'd to them directly. This is smart, as you can not dispute any charges like you can with a credit card company. I spent a lot of time in Hawaii as a child and am well aware of the climate on the islands, but I was not prepared for what I walked in to. Upon arrival all of the surfaces were wet. The windows were open and a small fan sat in the corner, insufficient for the amount of humidity. The (2) lamp shades that flanked the bed were covered in mold from the lack of ventilation to the room. My boyfriend and I contacted the property manager and she immediately came to meet us. Within 5 minutes she met every one of our concerns with an excuse and an attitude. She said that she would replace the lamp shades the following day(which does little to resolve the underlying concern). When we asked why they didn't ventilate the space with a window air conditioner, the owner told us to "go buy one yourselves and put it in if you need to." After spending all the time and money to travel to Hanalei and set up care for our 5 year old daughter in our absence, we were unwilling to get get ready for a rehearsal dinner and wedding in a damp room with moldy fixtures. Both the property manager and the owner were unwilling to give us any of our money back, not even a portion. We did not stay in the property for more than 30 minutes and decided to go stay in a hotel further away. I think it's important for future renters to know that you should only ever book your stay with a company that allows you to pay with a credit card. We have had to take other action to resolve this issue in a fair and just manner.

Owner's Response: I have been the booking agent (not the manager) for this studio for 13 years and have only had satisfied clients. We have plenty of reviews that reflect this. The guests that stayed before these people, and the ones that have stayed following them, were all happy and satisfied with the studio. In fact the ones that stayed just prior to them wrote and told me they wished they could of stayed longer. This summer was on record as the hottest and most humid we have ever had here on Kauai. It is unusual for Vacation Rentals or Kauai residents to have A/C in their homes. We typically don't need it. For weeks prior to their arrival we had strange weather patterns with lots of unseasonal heavy rainfall, extremely humid heat and very little if any tradewinds. Everyone I know that lives here were pretty miserable due to these unusual weather conditions. Based on their comments, I feel that when they arrived, they were understandably hot, tired, hungry, the weather was awful and they wanted A/C. There are 2 fans in the studio, neither of which were on, and not all the windows had been opened yet. They had concerns about 2 small lamp shades that had some mildew stains on them, which we offered to replace immediately (they have since been replaced). When the reservation was made, she never asked if there was A/C and it is not advertised as having it. In the 40 years I have lived on Kauai, I have never felt this much humidity ever. I don't blame them for wanting A/C. The air was very moist and uncomfortably hot. They decided within minutes of arrival that they did not want to stay there and I came right over when they called me, to see what I could do for them. Short of putting in an A/C unit right at that moment, they were not willing to stay. Our rental agreement that she signed states: Should you experience inclement weather during your stay, this will not serve to void, alter, change or cancel the rental contract or rate. The rental unit was exactly as advertised, but they choose to vacate the property. Sadly they left and the weather changed the very next day back to our usual cooler temperatures and tradewinds. It is true we do not accept credit cards for payment, but there is travel insurance that is available for travelers. We do care very much for the quality experience of our guests as are reflected in the past reviews and on site guest book.
