About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + built-in sofa, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-5)

Casita Azulejos in Sayulita Mexico, is unique as one of the oldest houses in Sayulita, well known in the community as an integral part of local history.

The house has been tastefully upgraded, taking care to preserve the original Sayulita style. It still retains the rustic charm of handmade dishes and molcajete (traditional mortar and pestle) with the addition of modern amenities

Coming up the street the first thing you notice is a jungle of mango, avocado, bougainvillea and palms hanging over the garden walls.

A gateway flanked by pillars lead from the street to a winding staircase through the Garden, revealing a house with a palapa-covered veranda.

Casita Azulejos is a two-bedroom, two-bath home with an open floor plan that unites the kitchen, dining and living rooms. Traditional handmade tile floors throughout provide rustic comfort with authentic charm.

Located on a neighborhood street at the south end of Sayulita, Casita Azulejos provides a cozy sanctuary 2 blocks from the beach, and a 4-minute walk to the plaza at the center of town.

Cleaning staff and custom fridge stocking is offered for an additional fee. Please inquire.

About Belle Marko

I am a native of San Francisco, living just north in Marin County, California. I grew up hearing my mother tell tales of living in Mexico and going to art school in Guadalajara during the 50's, it always sounded so romantic and adventurous. I guess it got into my blood somehow.

Today, I am a painting contractor with a degree in fine art and interior design. I too now have that special place in Mexico that I call my home away from home. I love to surf and swim in the warm water of Sayulita or the cool rivers of California.

I enjoy doing improvements each time I visit my home in Mexico as much as enjoy my life in California, I'd say I have the best of both worlds. I am one happy person!

Belle Marko purchased this house in 2004

Why Belle Marko chose Nayarit

When I first stepped out of the jeep in the pouring rain in 2000 onto the plaza of Sayulita, It hit me - I had to have a place here, it instantly felt familiar. I later had a conversation on the beach with a man named Javier (d-2005) he explained to me that there are places on the earth that call to certain people, I knew this was one of those places for me. Never once have I had buyers remorse or any regret, Sayulita has a spirit about it that holds me, feeds me and is a place to call home. The people are special, the food is some of the best I've ever had, the sounds at night, the waves to surf, the fireflies in October, the interesting people that dare to come here all make a magic thing, I hope you feel it too.

What makes this house unique

Most of all I love how I slow down to human-speed when I'm here in Sayulita, The outdoor shower and jungle garden are a few of my favorite things about Casita Azulejos, I love reading my book in the hammock or falling asleep on the beach and not even having to get up from my towel to find lunch, the tamale lady magically appears just as I begin to get hungry, I love the early morning light as it hits the front veranda or walking down to the beach for a dawn patrol surf session. I love the man down the street cooking chicken and singing, I even love that darn gas truck with it's obnoxious tune - or the roosters any time of the day (or night), I love my neighbors and friends that I've gotten to know over the years, I love all the music and the fish. I love walking to the graveyard, I love the way the Mexican people seem to celebrate anything! I love to hear little kids running in the plaza and laughing, I love snorkeling off the Marieta Islands or riding Manuel's horses to see the sunset on the beach or taking a boat with Tigre to a hard to find surf break in a secret cove, I love the random fireworks for no apparent reason or the rogue carnival that comes to town. I love the shrimp truck, the vegi truck, the plastic broom truck, the fruit truck, the recycle truck..I love doing Yoga up on the bluff under the palapa in Shelly's class - the iguanas and geckos and birds, but most of all I love the way Casita Azulejos feels like a home.

Special Retreat with Incredible Location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in the newly renovated upstairs portion of Casita Azulejos! The open air living/kitchen concept was a unique feature and has two sofas that can be made up as additional beds, which would work well during milder months. We stayed in June and found it a bit too warm to sleep in the open air, but the air conditioned master bedroom had enough room for us to take a mattress in there for additional sleeping for our two young boys. The saltwater pool was perfect for afternoon dips after returning from the beach, and the location was close to many wonderful restaurants (...we may have ordered guacamole to-go from Antonia's on more than one night for late night snacking!). The neighborly chickens have lots to say in the wee hours, so a set of earplugs could be handy. We had our own two chickadee boys calling for attention and food at sunrise, so they weren't a problem for us :)

Belle was the ultimate host and always answered emails promptly. In fact, we booked our room while in Sayulita without a place to stay, and she went above and beyond to get us sorted as quickly as possible! The house is well appointed (excellent towels, beautiful dishes, great beds!), the decor spot-on, and Belle provides you with an incredible list of her favorite places, which easily made for some of the best experiences of our trip!

Owner's Response: I was delighted to have Courtney and her family be my first guests in the Upper Casita! I think it was a good way to kick off the new rental. Communication was easy and they were great guests. Since they were my first guests, I asked for tips on any little adjustments they thought I needed and was so grateful for the suggestions. So thank you Courtney, for making the place even more perfect! I hope to hear from you on your next trip to Sayulita! XO, Belle

Lovely house with beautiful decor

  • 3 of 5

A beautifully decorated and renovated property in a fantastic location in Sayulita. It can get incredibly hot at night without aircon and the many iguanas like to leave quite a few droppings which need constant hosing down. Very pretty rooms and spacious outdoors.

Authentic, Accessible, Awesome - Great stay in Sayulita

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect on a lot of levels. It is close to everything but far enough away from the square that it was peaceful in the mid/late evening. It had plenty of space, my wife and I stayed in this 2 BR place by ourselves but could have very easily enjoyed it had there been another couple staying with us. The house itself is beautiful and very well maintained.

We were able to really feel at home, whether we were chilling in the hammock with the friendly and random cat, cooking in-house with some locally-bought wine or walking 5 minutes to the beach.

Truly a very authentic Sayulita experience and the host could not have been easier to deal with.

We look forward to re-renting on our next visit, thank you very much once again!

Perfect Sayulita Casita!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Azueljos over the holidays and had a fantastic experience. The home is lovely and perfect. It is located in the perfect location - right off the town square and a couple blocks from the beach. Everything is walkable. We were in Sayulita over the height of tourist season and Casa Azueljos felt like a hidden retreat. You left the bustle of the town center and were in a private hideaway. Several patios, from the front patio you can nap on one of the hammocks and can slightly see people going by on the street below, but you feel hidden. You also feel like you're in a nature preserve. The gardener keeps the grounds manicured beautifully and there are large iguanas and birds in the treetops above. It was incredibly relaxing. Inside is beautiful and tidy, well kept. Comfy beds. Also a great value for the area.

Fabulous Casita

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented Bell's Casa Azulejos for 20 days last year. I have to admit we were initially frustrated with all the noise. New construction next door and behind the casita, roosters crowing, dogs barking, cats roaming about on the property. It took us a week to settle in and feel the stress of our work life back home begin to leave us. It was our first time to Sayulita and initially we both decided it was not for us because we were looking for a quiet beach vacation. As time went on we fell in love with Sayulita and the Casita Azulejos. The noise we got used to. We laughed each time the gas truck would rattle up Gringo Hill announcing over a loud speaker "Sony Gas". I even video tapped it. It was hilarious. Sayulita Mexico is a very different culture. There are stray cats and dogs who may visit your property, construction everywhere and loud music in the square. It is very dusty but it is Mexico. We loved hearing the church bell ring each night for the evening mass. The square is very traditional Mexico. Its great.

Bells Casita is absolutely beautiful. The colors and decor are very traditional. Bell has put creative touch into her home and it is clear she cares deeply for it. Some of the paintings are her own art work. We loved the outdoor shower after the beach and surfing. The wash bucket to wash and rinse bathing suits and board shorts. The clothesline out back was great. We loved to play cards and hang out on the front porch and people watch as gringos climbed the hill. It is like being in the jungle a bit. There is a rather large iguana who likes to poop on the steps leading up to the Casita. We used the hose to wash it away. It also helped with the dust. There is a small convenience store just a few steps away. Its a family owned business and they are so great. The food is fabulous and cheap. We tried several restaurants while we were there and loved the food. The walk to the beach takes just 10 minutes if you take the first left on the dirt surface road after leaving the house. You will by pass a taxi service that will get you back to the airport if you do not rent a car. (you do not need a car if you plan to stay in Sayulita). What is nice is the casita is tucked away so you do not hear the music that goes all night in the square. Bring ear plugs though, to drown out all the other noise. Casita Azulejos ROCKS!!!!!!! We truly loved Sayulita so much we are planning a month this year and we will attempt to rent Bell's lovely oasis again.

Casita Azulejos is located just outside of the central part of Sayulita, The house is one of the older homes, but has been beautifully upgraded with tasteful Mexican furnishings and artwork. I keep it simple yet comfortable, the locals that have visited Casita Azulejos love that I have not gringo-fied the house. I try to keep it authentic Mexican style.

Sayulita population is about 5000, but you'd never know it. It's a small pueblo with modern amenities such as ATM's and a cell tower. The village is sweet and laid back yet has a lively night life, there is great shopping and lots of fresh fish, beautiful tropical plant and critter life, warm waters and intoxicating balmy nights.
