Elegant Accommodation in a Blissful Rural setting

Bedrooms 2
Space 2,000 sq. ft.
Property type guest house

About the property

Farmhouse, 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath + Sleeping Porch on the Beautiful Topisaw Creek

The perfect get-away home in the country! Custom built with antique pine flooring and decorated with antiques and original artwork. You'll enjoy relaxing with morning coffee in the patio rockers or with a cocktail on the front porch swing or with a cup of tea and a good book (from our well-stocked shelves) on the world's comfiest sofa. Unwind and enjoy old-fashioned pleasures such as playing cards or board games, watching a movie, reading, having a simple family meal or just swinging or rocking and listening to the sounds of nature. Rose Gate was built as a dream cabin in the woods by my parents, and it continues to shelter and inspire families with its calming beauty. Come as a couple for a romantic getaway or with friends for a fun weekend or with your kids and/or grandkids for a week of memory-making. Whether you enjoy being in the woods with nature all around or prefer to admire it from a window (in an air-conditioned home!), Rose Gate is a perfect choice.

The spring-fed (and thus always refreshing!) Topisaw Creek is just down the path, so plan to spend time in a lounge chair on the private beach soaking up the sun or hunting for rocks and fossils (petrified wood and arrowheads have been found here). Many folks also enjoy a leisurely float down the creek in inner tubes ('tubing') or in a kayak. (Please note that after heavy rains the creek rises to epic heights and is too dangerous to navigate.) If walking is difficult, you can drive your car right to the edge of the beach!

Rose Gate Farm is centrally located for your stay in the Deep South--1.5 hours from New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Jackson and 1 hour from Natchez and Hattiesburg. We are 15 minutes from McComb MS where you'll find grocery stores, a shopping mall, a hospital and Percy Quin State Park, home of 4 star-rated Quail Hollow Golf Course. We are also a short drive from Southwest MS Junior College in Summit, MS.

Bedroom #1 has a king size 4 poster bed, a large walk-in closet and its own marble-floored bathroom with double vanities and walk-in shower.

Bedroom #2 has a queen size sleigh bed, a lovely view of the wooded front yard and its own bath with shower.

The roomy back sun porch has 2 twin beds (a day bed with pull-out trundle). Privacy curtains turn the sun porch into a cozy sleeping area.

About David Varnado

We love the serenity of life in the country! Our lives are centered here, but we also love to travel. So far, France is our favorite destination. We also have a shop/bakery/cafe, Topisaw General Store, in downtown McComb and enjoy being a part of the revitalization efforts in our historic railroad town.

David Varnado purchased this guest house in 2004

Why David Varnado chose Summit

My parents, Earl and Edith, built Rose Gate as their retirement dream. They both grew up in the country and were so happy to return here, hand-selecting every facet of the home, from its siting to the antique flooring to the roses, camellias and southern shrubs that surround the property.

What makes this guest house unique

Private, relaxing, quiet, restful...We hear these words again and again as our guests describe their stay at Rose Gate. You'll enjoy being alone in nature, watching birds from the swing and drinking your morning coffee or your evening cocktail on the front porch.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was a beautiful, peaceful place to sit back and reflect. I enjoyed the creek each and every day. Hoping to bring the family back in the near future. Loved the house, loved the nature!

Heaven on Earth

We stayed here in April earlier this year. We enjoyed it immensely. Beautiful house, beautiful grounds and surroundings. We were there when everything was blooming, including the azalea lined driveway. It was so peaceful to sit on the front porch, under the carport on the porch swing, and at the lovely creek. Be sure to buy groceries because once you get to this house, you will not want to leave. We plan on coming back every year. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. The house and grounds are more beautiful than the pictures show.

Thank you Varnado's for opening up this home for visitors. We usually stay in a hotel when we come to McComb but no more! The home was so relaxing and the creek was absolutely refreshing. Wish we could have stayed longer. My 2 1/2 year old granddaughter had a blast as did the adults. Thanks again!

Rose Gate Farm - The Definitive Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My family visited Rose Gate in July 2012 and we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was perfect for our vacation needs. As a native of the area I was familiar with Topisaw Creek and the Bogue Chitto River, having camped, fished, tubed, and kayaked in the area off and on over a lot of years. But I had no idea there was such a hidden jewel nestled way back in the woods off a road already less traveled. The house was beautifully appointed and full of unexpected amenities and little secluded nooks for reading or sipping coffee and watching a sunrise or a thunderstorm. I loved the front porch swing, the open layout of the house, and especially the enclosed sunroom that runs the length of the house on the east side and takes advantage of sunrise through the woods.

We availed ourselves to the recreational opportunities the creek affords by lounging in the cool water and on the sandbars, kayaking on a couple different stretches of stream, and small water fishing for redbellies (longear sunfish) and Kentucky or spotted bass with fly rods and ultralight tackle. After a half century of catching redbellies, I am still convinced they are the prettiest and definitely the tastiest fish in Mississippi.

But we were equally content to just hang around the house, enjoy the great sound system or watch movies, loaf on the patios, and wander the gardens and grounds. Actually, we were so content that nobody wanted to go anywhere else to visit, sightsee, or even to eat out - a remarkable condition for us. In fact, after an especially heavy thunderstorm knocked out power for miles around for a couple hours, we just lighted a few candles and enjoyed the enhanced peace and quiet even more.

It would be easy to pass along the road by Rose Gate and never even know it is there, perhaps its greatest charm, for me. But once you do visit, I'm sure that you, like my family, will look forward to going back again and again.

Restful weekend

  • 5 of 5

What a restful place to spend a few days! Thanks for sharing your place wih us. We enjoyed reading in the sunroom, napping on the couch, swinging on the back deck, playing the baby grand piano in the living room, working puzzles in the dining room, listening to jazz and Chopin on the surround sound system all over the house and gobbling down their great mocha brownies! It was a perfect respite from our busy life - two days with no TV or Internet or telephones or children. Just what we needed. Returned home relaxed! P.S. Enjoyed dinner at The Caboose and the soaps and lotion are wonderful! Thank you again!

Rose Gate Farm is Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

Rose Gate is both uniquely elegant and comfortable. The hosts are very gracious and helpful. The home is tastefully decorated and fully stocked which made our visit such a joy!! The grounds are beautifully landscaped with flowers, shrubs and statues. In addition, there is an abundance of outdoor seating to enjoy the peaceful, lovely views. Rose Gate is immaculate with many unexpected amenities. The location is country for a restful retreat and yet only a short drive from McColm and Summit for dining and shopping. Natchez, Vicksburg, Hattiesburg, St. Francesville and New Orleans are within a couple hours drive for day trips. Rose Gate’s sound system is definitely a bonus. The front and back porches are great for reading and visiting with family and friends.

Rose Gate is a must visit!! GO to Rose Gate is our recommendation. We are already discussing our next visit.
