'ARBOR HOUSE' is an 1840 Maine Farmhouse lovingly owned and maintained by the same family since 1923. There are six bedrooms, three full baths and an outdoor shower. The kitchen has an old Atlantic Clarion woodstove (unusable) and new gas stove. This charming home would be perfect for family gatherings, weddings, reunions and retreats or just quietly bask in the warmth of Down East hospitality.
'Arbor House' has a priceless ambiance reflecting years of family memories and the love of many Maine summers together; it wraps itself around you like an old quilt. All this on the edge of one of Maine's most charming villages far removed from the over development of southern Maine. Upscale restaurants, shops catering to the local gentry, beautiful waterfront at every turn and cultural events to excess, make this a perfect vacation destination. Beautiful Blue Hill, 'Arbor House', the old barn, 18 acres of lawn, fields, forest and walks await you.

Arbor House has been in our family since 1923 when our grandfather, ADM Harry Rousseau, bought it site unseen. His wife Gladys, a landscape designer, was furious. But when she saw the white picket fence and arbor she said, 'I love it'. Harry and Gladys, with their three sons, Pete, Billy and Bard lived at AH from May 1 to October 31 in their early years. ADM Rousseau died in 1930 but Gladys and her sons enjoyed many pleasurable years in Blue Hill. The family members are buried there. We, too, have fond memories of summers in Maine. We particularly remember entering the Blue Hill Flower Show, catching crabs on the beach and exercising trotters at the local fair grounds. Our memories still live at our beloved Arbor House. Alexandra (Zan) Stark, Wendy Powell, Polly Roessler and Lenie Epifano, all of which has been possible because of our dear mother, Mary Rousseau.
Alexandra Stark purchased this farmhouse in 1923
Arbor House has lovingly been in our family since 1923. Our grandfather, Harry Rousseau, bought it sight unseen AND without informing his wife, Gladys and three sons. Once Gladys arrived at Arbor House and the white arbor she said, Harry, all is forgiven, I love it!! Many family members have enjoyed AH and lovely Blue Hill.
walk to groceries/town/Blue Hill Harbor, many unique shops and restaurants.
This house set among an apple orchard with spectacular views of Blue Hill exudes charm and is steeped in family tradition. Perfect location convenient to the quaint village with all the services needed. Enjoyed cooking in the fully equipped kitchen.
We will definitely return to this lovely vacation home.
We have stayed several times at Arbor House. It has such charm and heritage to the home. The house was conveniently located to downtown with quaint little shops. Bluehill is a fantastic town to vacation with a large holistically minded/creative/ artist population. The hostess went over and above to make our stay memorable and comfortable! We will definitely return to the house!!
Our annual "family reunion" at Arbor House couldn't have been better! A large farmhouse where everyone was able to spread out; the early birds could gather in the morning while those who wanted to sleep in were able to. Beautifully decorated with lots of antiques making you feel as though you stepped back in time. Kitchen is very well equipped to include 2 lobster pots. Short drive to the village of Blue Hill. We would definately recommend this property.
