About Dena

This is an image of our kids in Yosemite last of the many reasons why we chose our house. There is so much to do. My husband and I purchased this home in 2009 after vacationing in the Yosemite/Bass Lake area for a couple of years. We fell in love with the Sierra National Forest and so did our kids. We reside in Los Angeles and love to escape to the Family Lodge monthly and enjoy nature. We come as often as we can and our kids never want to leave. The property is well kept and is so relaxing and inspiring. My husband and I get great inspiration while we are here, an awesome retreat. We know you will enjoy it as much as we do!

Dena purchased this house in 2009

Why Dena chose Yosemite Area

We love this area, the big ponderosa pine trees, the lake, Yosemite and the peacefulness. We can be at Bass Lake in 7 minutes and Yosemite in 30 minutes. We often spend the day at the lake or Yosemite and come home to our hideaway in the woods. We love to get out of the city and enjoy nature...... watch the deer and the turkeys.....and the smell of the pine trees. There is also lots of land for our kids to run around on and they love it!

What makes this house unique

You'll enjoy a retreat experience with modern comforts, a gourmet kitchen (furnished with dishes and cookware by Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn), and luxury comfort with all new beds and luxury hotel linens. There are 4 acres of open, wooded land to run around on, plus the endless National Forest just outside our front door. There are many activities at the Family Lodge and very close by. Play a good old family game of badminton in the yard or take a short hike up the mountain behind the house and take in the breathtaking views. Bass Lake and Yosemite are so close and so beautiful, it's also great during the quiet off-season months! The Family Lodge is rustic, modern & very comfortable!

Dear Dena,

We loved your home! We had fun roasting marshmallows in hte fire pit and having dinner on the lake. It was a great time for the kids and the adults too. It was such a relaxing get away for an old group of friends.

Our Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here last summer and are planning again for this summer. We had a family reunion here and had plenty of room for everyone. There was lots of yard and woods for the kids to play outside. The kitchen and house are very nicely furnished and comfortable. We spent a lot of time at Bass Lake and Dena gave us recommendations for Yosemite. We look forward to coming again in August this year. Thank you Dena!

Lovely retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time to stay at the family lodge. We stayed here in the summer of 2011 and again in 2012. It's a great place and location for our family gathering. The deck is great for relaxing as it is so peaceful and quiet. Ours kids ran around and played on the playset. The house is very spacious and comfortable with beautiful furnishings. The kitchen is very well stocked and has a big island. We went to Bass Lake and Yosemite. The owners were so helpful and told us about the swinging bridge in Yosemite which our kids loved. This is one of our favorite houses we have rented.

Nice Home, Terrible Owner

  • 1 of 5

Many of the lovely things you read about the property are true and we had a very nice stay with our family and friends. However, the owner of this property is a nightmare to deal with and definitely taints our fond memories of an otherwise fun family vacation.

Upon departing the property we notified the owner that a minor faucet part broke in the bathroom; we also offered to order the part and pay for it. Note, the part broke under "normal use" and it was generous of us to offer to pay but in good will, we did. The owner took 6 days to respond and when she did, she included a list of FALSE complaints about the property claiming we left it dirty, damaged, and that extra cleaning was required. Each of her claims was wrong and borderline rude. We have photos which dispute them. Note, in addition to a security deposit you will pay a signifcant cleaning fee for this property and yet if you leave a crumb under the table, beware-- the owner will claim that as "damage" to her home. Same is true if you put trash in the trash can; she again believes this is "damage". Mind you, the checkout procedure book (which hopefully she will now fix) tells you to leave trash in bedroom, bathroom and kitchen trash cans when you check out.

The saga goes on but is not worth detailing. Suffice to say, she was unresponsive about our deposit check unless we first emailed her and inquired about it; we often had to wait 4-7 days for a reply which usually just told us to be patient. Not once during this time did she send a repairman's estimate of the cost to repair the faucet which any good owner will do if they plan to withold funds from a security deposit. It took over 4 weeks from our departure date to receive a refund of our deposit (less the faucet part) and she only did this after a very firm letter promising legal action. Had we not sent that letter, it's quite likely we would still be waiting or would never have received any money back.

There are many beautiful homes/properties in the Bass Lake/Yosemite area. I strongly urge you to look elsewhere for one that is owned by a reasonable, responsive, and honest person. We would NOT recommend this property to anyone and as landlords/property owners ourselves, we were disgusted by the lack of professionalism this owner displayed.

Owner's Response: It is really disappointing to have a review like this from a guest that we went out of our way to accommodate. We work really hard to ensure that all of our guests have a wonderful time and have everything they need. Our house is well taken care of and offers many ammenities that most house rentals do not. It is unfortunate this guest decided not to treat our home properly. The children's beds were badly soiled from several bathroom accidents. No attempt was made to rinse or wash them out. The linens had to be disposed of. Food was left all over the house, including dried-up waffles and bacon under the kitchen table. The guests admitted they never swept the kitchen after being there for nine days with 12 people. Although they did not show any care for our home, we did not charge them for the extra cleaning needed. Our housekeeper worked an extra day to get it clean. As for the broken faucet, the spindle was broken from misuse. The metal piece was clearly broken in half. All of the bathroom fixtures were newly installed in early 2012. The guest did attempt to find the broken part online, however, she found the wrong piece and it took time to get the correct one from the manufacturer. It took four weeks to get fixed as we had a hard time getting the correct piece. When we received it, she was only charged for the actual cost. I spent many hours getting this repaired with no apologies from our guest. I was in constant contact with the guest keeping them updated. We understand things are going to get broken, but it's too bad this guest had to take her anger out on us. We were quite generous with this guest and it is unfortunate she has chosen to lash out at us after not taking care of our home.

Family Lodge Review

  • 5 of 5

My family and I (6 adults & 3 children) stayed at the Family Lodge in July 2011 celebrating my parents' 50th wedding anniversary and had a wonderful stay. The home is conveniently located near Bass Lake (10 mins), Yosemite South Gate (30 mins) and Oakhurst (15 mins). We found it very clean and well maintained. The kitchen was extremely WELL STOCKED with dishes and utensils; especially if you are used to staying at a time-share condo or the like. The beds are very comfortable with nice linens and the bathrooms had very nice towels. The property is great and adjacent to the National Forest. We saw deer every day coming through the yard. We also enjoyed numerous fires and making s'mores at the backyard firepit. The price was very competive with other properties, but looked much better than other homes on the internet.

Perfect Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying in this beautiful home. It was even nicer than we expected and very comfortable. The kitchen was great and we loved grilling on the deck. The kids loved the playset and watching the deer and the turkeys. The house is really close to the lake. The owners suggested that we go to the Swinging Bridge falls in Yosemite and we loved it. It was really hard to leave, it's so peaceful here. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality Dena and Bob! We highly recommend.

Lovely Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The house was spacious and well furnished. Since we cooked our evening meals, we enjoyed the kitchen and the ourdoor grill. If you are looking for a secluded quiet home in the foothills, this is hard to beat. A good golf course is 20 minutes away which the six of us played twice. Bass Lake is about 10 minutes away and has boating, swimming, fishing, restaurents and bars. Yosemite is about 30 minutes but the Park is so large that it takes another 45 minutes to an hour to get to many of the hikes and falls. We spent three days in the Park and one should go early.
