Guestbook comments from the owner

Mahalo for sharing your lovely residence. Everything was as described online and we really appreciated the bicycles. The beach is only a 3-minute ride and island snow is on the way for shave ice. Honolulu and Waikiki are a short bus trip, which absolutely beats driving and parking there. Overall, it was an immensely pleasant and relaxing stay!

The Perfect Kailua Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED the Ginger Gazebo, not only was it an easy access to Kailua town, the beaches of Kailua & Lanikai but Susanne had all the amenities that you would want from Bikes, to beach chairs, umbrellas and more. It was Memorial Day weekend which is always busy in Kailua and it was so quiet and peaceful on her property! We will be staying here again, and honestly Susanne couldn't be a better host! Mahalo!

Good and not so good

  • 3 of 5

This is a house in a residential neighborhood that the owner has converted into several rental spaces. During the time we were staying there we shared the property with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 7 others (a total of 7 and 9 including us). The house spans the property from side to side with just enough room for a walkway down each side. There is room in front for three parking spaces, a small lawn, a gazebo and the entry to the main house. The back yard is mostly filled with the pool and spa although there is a small lawn and deck that is associated with the main house.

The landscaping is pleasant and does provide a measure of privacy from the neighbors. The pool and spa are also pleasant but hardly big enough for all of the residents to enjoy unless you figure out a way to take turns. The house and neighborhood are generally quiet but you should expect typical neighborhood noise.

That's the good, now to the bad. We had the unit associated with the gazebo which was considered "our" outdoor space. The outdoor space is important as the units don't have a lot of interior room and it's pleasant outdoors. The gazebo was essentially our living room but it had no roof so it wasn't much use when it rained. And incoming service wires run overhead which makes a perfect spot for birds to roost....you know the rest.

The furniture for our outdoor space needed to be refurbished or replaced. Two of the chairs were missing pads on the legs which made them wobbly and the metal structure of the table had corroded away inside of the wicker out covering. I'm not sure that it would have held if a person had leaned against it. The barbecue for our unit was rusted to the point of being useless and one of our two kitchen chairs was beginning to come apart as the glue was failing. The bed was comfortable but the covering was faded rather than the bright color shown in the pictures.

Air conditioning is provided but apparently not getting regular service so were not operating very efficiently. One of our neighbors complained and was amazed at the difference basic maintenance made in it's operation.

Hot water regulation is another issue but I don't have room to discuss that.

The property could be much nicer than it is if the owner paid as much attention to the incidental items as she does the landscaping and pool.

If you are comfortable with limited privacy and the owner fixes some of the problems I would stay here but I would look elsewhere first.

Owner's Response: Well I actually got a very detailed list from this guest and have improved some of the items, already had purchased two beautiful outdoor chairs from Costco ofr the gazebo. Although I have to say I have not had such a negative attitude in a guest in a long while and feel no responsibility for that. I spend so much time making sure my guests have top of the line products and furniture and showers and pool and spa and bikes and beach chairs and parking and landscaping and fish ponds and high speed internet and quiet. Please know that $165 a night does not give you private 10,000ft lot two blocks from the prettiest beach with no traffic or road noise . I live here and rarely see my guests so we are very private and people are super friendly. I know you can pay $500 a night for the hyatt but please tell me where you get a private pool because I have seen the hotels in waikiki and the pools are packed solid....our is stunning and 99% available for just you. Our outdoor gazebo is so priceless with the fresh air and the stars at night so I am surprised at the comment about the birds..... He was right about my outdoor light switch was corroded and I have called my electrician again. My a/c is top of the line and less than a year old. These comments seem unfair and unrealistic and dont seem to capture the beauty of my properties.

Great getaway

  • 5 of 5

We found the Ginger Gazebo to have everything we needed. The room was personalized with lots of bright, creative touches as well as the owner's artwork. The King size bed was comfortable and the air conditioner in the bedroom worked great. There were bikes and boogie boards to use when we needed them. Overall, good experience!

Not my favorite experience

  • 3 of 5

We traveled from Maui for a trade show and stayed in the studio on this property. When we arrived, there was a "welcome note" from the owner telling us not to communicate with anyone asking questions in the area because her rental was legal; however, we were instructed to tell anyone asking that we were a "friend" of the owner's and just visiting (not paying guests).. This was very awkward to us.

Then, we opened the booklet on the table prepared for our stay and found:

1) We would be charged a significant amount if we left the A/C on in our room while we were away.

2) Another unusual upcharge if we left the pool/Jacuzzi on

3) There was a disagreement of some sort or contention with a neighbor and if approached by him we were to tell the owner immediately

We found these things a bit disturbing. We also felt we couldn't enjoy the pool area with any privacy because the back of the house and living area was completely open (no walls) to the pool and back yard area. This gave all of the other guests and the owner a view of us if we had decided to swim. Again, a bit awkward.

Overall, the unit was mediocre. Needed a good cleaning - mold in the shower and on the shower curtain, a layer of dust under the bed, and a pitcher we decided to use for iced tea was filthy.

The A/C worked very well, and plenty of dishes and utensils were provided. Bed was okay.

Too far to walk to town but just close enough to walk to the beach (as long as you don't have to carry chairs, coolers, etc.).

We felt, for the money, we would have rather had a hotel with daily maid service, soap/shampoo an upgraded bed and cleaner surroundings. We have not stayed in many studios; however, we have rented entire homes and condos before and found them to be much nicer and with better amenities without the "warnings" regarding neighbors and such.

Finally, remember this property is in very close proximity to neighbors; in other words, it is a subdivision with very small lots and hardly a "Luxurious Resort" as described.

Owner's Response: Sometimes reviews just make your heart sink, especially if you are me (the owner), who wants all of her guests to have a great experience. I have built this property from scratch and devote myself to going the extra mile. I even recently paid an electrician $600 dollars to get lights for the gazebo at night. It is so wonderful to be outside at night! I went swimming at flat island, which is three minutes from our property and it was totally amazing! I think these people don’t realize how fortunate we are in our location and the fact that there are no hotels on this side of the island. It is a small, beachy, gorgeous place. My backyard landscaping and pool are stunning and actually private for 95 % of the time. Did they hear the fountain in the fish pond at the front of the house that we maintain with a lot of effort? The shower and bathroom in this unit are my pride and joy, I hand painted the mural, the fish installed in the travertine and the starfish in the pebbles on the floor. I guess this guest doesn’t appreciate what an amazing property we have and how much work it has taken to make this place a great resort. Cant win them all just know I care and have worked very hard to give all of my guests a relaxing Hawaiian experience.

Nothing more we could of asked for!

  • 5 of 5

WOW!!! I don't even know where to begin. We had such an amazing trip to Oahu. Everything was perfect. So close to everything. We walked to the beach a couple of times or it is a short 5 minute drive, if that. The Coconut Cabana was home away from home. You truly felt like a welcomed guest at her home. So much attention to detail...from the owner's lovely art that decorated the space, comfortable furniture, a binder full of useful tips about the area, a selection of books to choose from when you just want to sit by the pool and get lost in a book, beach chairs, coolers, plenty of beach towels. And not to mention, super clean! I can't even think of anything else we could of needed. You won't get this from a hotel! I will definitely book here again if we ever make it back! Mahalo Susanne!!
