About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Perhaps best said -- this is 'our house'--we are here two to three months in the winter, so we have it fixed to suit full-time living, not a skimpy rental. We are happy to share it with others who find it suitable. Our management company (English speakers) is located one block away, and available by phone.

The house is safely located on a main, lighted street, with the typical Mexican 'high wall' surrounding. Entrance from the street takes you through a covered patio to the living level--living room, kitchen, dining area. Down a flight of steps to the two bedrooms, each with a connected bath, and each with a large window looking onto the lower flowered patio. Up a flight of steps from the living level to the roof patio, partially covered for shade and sun, with half-bath and clothes washing machine, and view of churches in Centro.

Inside and out, the house is tastefully painted and decorated, colorful but not gaudy, good lighting in all rooms, ceiling fans in bedrooms and living room and covered patio, gas heater on living level and in both bedrooms. Kitchen is fully furnished--full-size refrigerator and stove, coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave, lots of dishes, pots and pans, and cutlery.

A maid, Marcela, comes three times a week to clean and do the house laundry. She is totally honest and conscientious, and speaks English. She took over in 2013 from her mother who was with us since 1998. If personal laundry or ironing is desired, you can arrange payment with her. She does not cook for us, but might be available. You will find her conscientious and approachable -- she likes to practice her English! And will help you with your Spanish.

Keywords: Updated casa--convenient, comfortable, close-in, economical-- fully furnished, cable with flat screen TV, drinkable water from the tap, washer, roof terrace, view of Centro

About The Owner

Barbara and I first came to San Miguel for a week in 1987, returned for two months after I retired in 1993, and have been coming back each year, usually the winter months, ever since. We have a lot of family at home -- 6 grandkids within driving range -- and we're active in our church and with friends, otherwise we might be coming here more often.

The Owner purchased this house in 1998

Why The Owner chose San Miguel de Allende

We bought so we would have a good location in San Miguel. We rented for several years, but found it getting more difficult to be as close-in as we liked so we could take advantage of all the offerings available. The house is easy to maintain, and has responded to our efforts to make it better -- we've added a covered patio in front, made the roof into an outdoor living space, and re-did the interior in colors and photos and flooring that gets 'oohs' and 'ahhs' from visitors.

What makes this house unique

We are one block from the street Ancha San Antonio where the Instituto Allende is located, offering art and language classes and cultural events. There are restaurants around here, but the easy walk into town will get you to many more excellent restaurants. While we are here, Barbara paints, I write, get into theatre stuff, and study Spanish. When we go out, we walk or take a taxi. Taxis are plentiful and cheap. And with the clear rich blue San Miguel sky overhead, it's pretty great to be here.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Dear Don and Barbara,

What a lovely home you have here at Orizaba 7A, "El Nido del Colibri"! It has been such a pleasure to have this as our "nest" while exploring San Miguel. Coming from British Columbia, I have so enjoyed the things I rarely experience there: the local ceramic tiles and dishes, the rooftop, patio, and bougainvilla. Don's beautiful photographs and Barbara's paintings are an added bonus, definitely. The gorgeous sunshine and overwhelming art scene, along with the colonial town itself, will all be fondly recalled.

A sincere thank you is extended also to Abraham Cadena [house manager] and Nicolasa [maid] for their kindness during our stay. Of course, especially thank you to Barb and Don for their generous, welcoming spirit. It would be wonderful to have this opportunity again one day . . . Happy New Year.

Location, location, location

And that isn't all. It's only two blocks from the institute, an easy walk to a score is restaurants, a large drug store , a dozen tiendas. And it is a 10 minute walk to the Jardin, the center of activity in the town. Buses are available for five pesos and cabs cost 40-50 to go most places you would like to see. The propert itself is well maintained by a sweet and charming young woman named Marcel's who comes thrice each week. The place is comfortable, homey and clean , with plenty of interesting art and photography by the owners. The kitchen is well supplied. Further the entrance is protected by high metal gates and secure locks, so we always felt safe. The walk to the town center can be a little challenging if one has physical limitations, but the ready availability of cheap cabs makes it "no problema". We had a wonderful time in San Miguel, and we shall return ASAP

A screen door and a cottage atmosphere here in San Miguel

  • 5 of 5

We have been here for two months and love our Casa. Perfect location, charming decor and a terrace with a screen door! Despite very wet weather in March we are delighted to be here. It is our tenth year visiting San Miguel. Thank you Don and Barbara and Marcella and Cadena

Just what we needed...

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a month - from mid December to mid January - in this well located, well equipped, well maintained and well decorated home. We could walk everywhere worth visiting, while enjoying a lively neighbourhood with everything we needed close at hand.

We echo the praise of the previous review - Convenient Oasis! -and add our thanks to Don for his helpful tips on getting to SMA and his detailed operating instructions for the house. The property manager was helpful and located close by.

We also got to enjoy all the Christmas and New Year festivities!

Our only regret was not bringing enough warm clothes. The evenings and nights were quite chilly at this time of year.

Thanks, Don

Convenient oasis!

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely, peaceful, well-appointed home away from home! We enjoyed the front patio each morning for coffee and the mirador each evening for a view of the city lights and the cool breezes. The house is clean and well-looked after by Nicolasa, who also did a bit of ironing for us. Don't forget to pay her extra for those tasks. Transportation was available just outside the front door either by local autobus (a 5 peso ride to el centro) or by taxis that pass by frequently. It is also a not-too strenuous walk up to el jardín from San Antonio. The house is well- located to the Instituto as well as local restaurants and Farmacia Guadalajara where you can get almost anything you might need. I would highly recommend the property to couples, single ladies (felt very secure)...great for an extended stay. We would definitely stay here again!

Owner's Response: Betsy and Jim -- thanks for your great review. It sounds like you captured just about all the house and its location has to offer. Please come back -- and stay longer!! I'll pass you good thoughts to Nicolasa and the Cadena office.

Home Yes!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We were astonished by the beauty, comfort, and value of this house. It is everything the artistic and comfort-craving soul could want in San Miguel! And the main street into Centro, which is lined with shops, restaurants, the Instituto, and more is literally steps away. A fantastic place, and everyone involved with it is a gem.
