About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

A combined living and dining room with cathedral ceiling and large colorful kitchen offer ideal areas for entertaining or family gatherings. The first floor has one bedroom and full bath while the 2nd floor provides 3 more bedrooms and bathroom with shower. The front porch overlooks meadows and woodland, leading down to Frenchman's Bay.

Midway up the Maine coast, this cottage is the perfect pied de terre to visit the rocky peninsulas and inlets of the state. The cottage offers easy access to Acadia and Schoodic for hiking or antiquing. Traveling farther afield, you can reach Campobello to the northeast, Deer Isle to the southwest, and Baxter State Park or fishing camps inland. Explore the surrounding area and find choice galleries of pottery and paintings, a winery, and organic farm.

If staying put and just relaxing is your aim, then walks through the surrounding farmland, blueberry picking, and painting may be more appealing. The nearby town of Sorrento offers great amenities for families. Kids can take tennis, sailing, and swimming lessons or engage in outdoor or rainy day activities with other children. Adults have golfing on the scenic Blink Bonnie golf course by the bay or tennis and croquet. The town provides water access for kayaking or boating.

A fun way to see Mount Desert is to take the ferry from a neighboring peninsula, browse the shops of Bar Harbor, and take an electric bus around Acadia National Park. Hiking the island's mountains offers unsurpassed views of rocky slopes cascading to the ocean, pink granite against deep blue. Follow up your day with fine dining and live theater.

The cottage offers escape from electronic media. A rainy day is a perfect opportunity to curl up with a great book by the fire or play a spirited game of cards. If you really need to check your email, the local library has wifi.

Why The Owner chose

The views, ocean breezes, and peaceful location are why we like it here. It represents an escape from the city with its noise and traffic. But we still find plenty to see and do.

What makes this house unique

We like hiking the trails of surrounding mountains and swimming in freshwater ponds. Other days, we do our gallery hopping. Our kids enjoy running around the mowed meadow nearby playing soccer, baseball, or a spirited game of frisbee. Younger children like picking blueberries for their pancakes or making terrariums out of moss and tiny pines. For city folk like us, we never tire of sunset watching or stargazing.

Charming Maine Cottage; Beautiful, Quiet and Well Equipped

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful vacation retreat house. It is nestled in the woods with a fantastic view of the mountains of Mt. Desert from the shaded front porch. The house is equipped with every thing a visitor could possibly need and it is spotlessly clean and neat. There is even an extra sleeping cottage to rent if you need more bed space. The owner was most helpful and very easy to communicate with. I would highly recommend this property to any person or family wishing to experience the peace and quiet beauty of the Maine coast from a comfortable and convenient historic Maine summer cottage.

Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My family and I really enjoyed our time here last summer. The cooler weather was a welcome change from the steamy heat back home. Our dog especially appreciated that! The house was perfect for us with plenty of room for everyone, and the view from the front porch is spectacular. We liked having the big stone fireplace to use on those colder nights. There was no lack of things to do in the area. Locally, we picked lots of wild blueberries for pies and cakes, a highlight for the kids. We also visited Schoodic Point, part of Acadia National Park, to watch the surf breaking on the rocks. It was a great place to have a picnic.

We also made several trips over to Mt Desert Island to take advantage of many of the activities there. Hiking and climbing some of the mountains were highlights, as was taking a mail boat to some of the smaller islands. We all enjoyed exploring the harbors and coves along the coast. Another highlight was a carriage ride. Tea at Jordan Pond House was a must, and we spent several times in Bar Harbor checking out the shops and restaurants.

It was the perfect family vacation for us and we have a lot of good memories of our time there. Everyone involved was so helpful and considerate of our family. We recommend this place to anyone who likes "rusticating" and being outdoors a lot.

Owner's Response: It's true, the home's open living/dining floorplan with fireplace and the expansive front porch encourage family interaction and easy entertainment, all within reach of some of the most gorgeous places to explore on the East Coast.
