About Peter and Andrea Kent

Peter Kent, arrived in Bocas Del Toro, Panama in 1993, one of the first foreigners to settle in the area. Originally from England, he has lived in Spain, France, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Costa Rica, on top of many years spent traveling the world. Throughout his life, he worked on a wide range of international construction projects, gaining experience. Peter has designed, developed and constructed numerous homes throughout the Bocas Del Toro Islands. His construction experience allows him to navigate the challenging development process of Panama, while his keen eye results in inspirational designs for each of the unique homes.

Andrea Kent is originally from Northern California, but lived in Costa Rica as a teenager. Her parents own a Resort in Costa Rica, they traveled to Bocas and met Peter, became good friends and ten years later met their daughter Andrea (for the first time). Fell in love, were married and now enjoy their son Orion. The Interior Designer graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California and has since applied her unique creative talents to both commercial and residential design projects, domestically and abroad. After founding Hawking Design Group, she became a reoccurring featured designer on the Home and Garden Television Network. The Kentways homes, including Vista Azul Lodge, benefit from Andrea's ability to marry traditional Caribbean style with more contemporary design and conveniences. Not a single design element goes untouched, resulting in inspired homes, built in the islands of Bocas Del Toro.

Peter and Andrea Kent purchased this house in 1994

Why Peter and Andrea Kent chose Central America

Peter bought the 100 acre property back in '94, 'I knew where I would eventually build my residence. I waited for my soul partner to cross my path so as to build our dream home together but the time was not yet. So I started to build, when the interior stage was upon me, I met my wife who turned out to be an interior designer'.

What makes this house unique

The spectacular setting of the creative Lodge with the Caribbean sea at the doorstep and the jungle at the back door gives this property a uniqueness, plus the Lodge is just a five minute boat ride to the charming, vibrant town of Bocas. It would take six months to explore and experience the islands fully. With a multitude of local activities to keep your stay entertaining. With also access to spa treatments, a getaway for rejuvenation, away from the stress of work and home.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wow, this is a beautiful place! I feel refreshed, inspired and awake. Each morning I awake to the sun beaming over the water into our room calling me to my morning yoga. We are staying in the upstairs master suite w/the outdoor shower and jacuzzi tub, thus the outside deck is spacious enough for me to do my stretches and meditate. I keep getting distracted by the views! I went for a walk up to the headland and now understand why they call it Bocas Del Toro (mouth of the Bull). Beneath the headland point is a small cave like are carved by the waves which is the "mouth" roaring with each pounding surf (or at least that's what I think). Today I will continue my journey around Carenero to the other side of the island and do the whole loop through town.

Last night we enjoyed dinner at the Bocas Bamboo Beach Club in town. It was so pleasant to sit outside and watch the people walk by while sipping a South American wine. Tonight we head to El Picado (the sin). We heard it is a Thai fusion type place with great Sangria. We also were told to go enjoy the BBQ burgers at the Pickled Parrot down the beach from the house. Friday is the Marina. I don't want to step on a scale.

Thank you Andrea and Peter for providing our perfect vacation get-away!

One of the Best

  • 5 of 5

This was by far one of the best vacations I've ever had. The house was amazing, the staff was super helpful, and Peter was delightful in answering all my questions leading up to the trip. This is truly a unique location that provides creature comforts immersed in a beautiful natural environment. Can't imagine a better place to stay in Bocas and hope to go back soon!

Thank you, Peter, Ely, Armodio, and Choi for everything!

We rented out Vista Azul Lodge for our destination wedding. Peter agreed to let us perform the ceremony outside on the beach and it couldn't have been better. Armodio's help and experience was great and our wedding day was absolutely perfect! Even the torrential down pour at the end of the night made for humorous memories! The property was in great condition, the beach was beautiful and clean, and the regular team of individuals who were available to us for any and every situation was invaluable. If I ever come back to Bocas with a large group again, I know exactly where I'm going to be staying!!

One side note, however, be prepared for sand flies! Completely out of the control of any homeowner/property manager, but it is a reality that one must come prepared for. They were only bad at dusk and night outside.

Peter was a great host and was always available for any questions prior to our arrival. Ely was our go-to for any questions regarding the property or the town. Armodio is a great, caring, funny, and hardworking man who is at your doorstep when you need any help at the house. Choi and his sons were extremely reliable and prompt water transportation.

We appreciate the constant help and service from everyone involved with Vista Azul Lodge that made our dream wedding vacation a reality.

Awesome Week!

  • 5 of 5

Vista Azul has views from a post card. Unbelievable and breathtaking, the clear Caribbean waters, open ocean, and the nearby islands make every view spectacular. You walk out of the house onto a gorgeous beach with calm waters. The house has air conditioned bedrooms for comfort and sea breezes to keep comfortable in the living areas of the house. The staff is great and can prepare some really great local cuisine. Easy to get to Bocas Town via water taxi or just walk down the beach to a couple local restaurants. Huge glass windows on the back of the house allow birders and nature lovers to take in a little jungle view with sloths and a variety of birds from the comforts of the house. All the staff from the airport and back to the airport and everything in between are courteous and friendly. We will return! Thanks Peter and Andrea and all your great staff!!

Best residence for large groups on Carenero Island! Step off front steps to the sea!

  • 5 of 5

The Kent's home on Caranero Island is far and away the largest, most comfortable for large families and groups. Located right on the water on the island's windward side, you wake up every day with ocean waves in front of you and sleep to ocean sounds at night. Within sight, you will see surfers learning how to ride waves. The house is equipped to prepare meals or, better yet, have the staff coordinate cooked meals for you! Within a short walk, there is a lovely seafood restaurant, Bibis. Just be careful not to run into a land crab at night (they're terrified of people)! The Kent's local staff is highly accommodative and ably coordinated any boat travel, services (e.g., in-house massages and excursions) or housekeeping we required. We echo some comments other guests had warned regarding eager locals who walk close to the house, infringing a bit on privacy especially during the afternoon hours. But once we grew accustomed to our surroundings after Day 2, we were convinced of how fortune were were to be guests of one of the nicest accommodations in Bocas del Toro. Thank you to the Kents and staff for a wonderful booking experience and vacation stay, as well as your responsiveness whenever we had questions!

Owner's Response: Pleased to hear the staff took good care of you and that you all had a wonderful time at the lodge. Yes, the land crabs are a humorous aspect when walking home after dinner at either the Pickled Parrot or Bibi's restaurant, but they are totally harmless :) Thank you for your posting. Warm regards from all the Vista Azul staff.

Great house in an amazing location

  • 5 of 5

Peter was very responsive during the booking process.

Arriving in this house is a true experience. It is located in an idyllic location, the house is huge and decorated with style. Every room is spacious, the bathrooms are clean and comfortable,.... Ely, the house manager came to pick us up at the airport and escorted us to the house.

We booked 2 people to help us with cleaning and cooking. This is really a great recommendation. It allows you to have a more relaxed stay and also experience local cuisine and cooking. From the island, we were able to explore Bocas every day as we pleased : we booked a local boat (Choy is our favorite!) and explored the islands in Bocas, we visited a great cave, went to the town,....

As for potential improvements :

- We did not have hot water in 1 side of the house for a couple of days. Not a disaster, but some people do appreciate a nice hot shower

- We were there in a holiday week. We were hoping for more privacy. You have quite some tourists walking by and chilling on the beach during the day and during the days it got very crowded with locals who literally trashed the beach. Piles of trash were left behind on the beach and cans and bottles were floating in the ocean when we woke up. Really sad. But I think that on regular weeks, this is less of an issue.

- There were a lot of bugs, so take plenty of insect repellent and coils if you want to enjoy the deck outside.

But all in all a great experience and a place I would definitely recommend for larger groups.

Owner's Response: We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your birthday stay at Vista Azul Lodge. The housekeeping ladies had fun preparing the decorations for your celebration too. The 16th of November is Bocas Day, similar to the U.S version of 4th of July's Independence Day, when many head to the province for holiday and celebrate the forming of the province of Bocas del Toro. It's become a very busy and special day for Bocatorenos. I would like to take this opportunity to inform future potential guests that Mr. Anonymous and I covered many varied aspects via 94 emails (back and forth), to be sure to answer all his questions prior to his trip. We make a lot of effort to communicate prior to guests arrival in Bocas Del Toro and our home. On behalf of all the Vista Azul staff we thank you very much for your business :)

PARADISE!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We have been fortunate to travel and see many places, but Vista Azul beats most. The house is spectacular, the architecture wonderful, very nice layout, each room and bathroom very good. All kinds of details present: interesting books to read, movies, amount of towels, beach chairs, etc. The truth is that we had exceeded expectations through the pictures we had seen.

Do not forget to try the food Martha!

Armodio thank you very much for your concern to every detail and make us feel always safe.

The best person to do the rides is CHOY. You should ask for it, always with the best intentions, very gentleman.

Very important!!! as Vista Azul is located on the beach and in the woods, mosquitoes are something to consider. Bring a lot of repellent

While there are always details that enhance (washer never worked, some air conditioners in poor condition, cleanliness was not the best), the place, the house, climate, etc. They managed to be the best holiday we have had as a family.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your experience at Vista Azul Lodge and for sharing the lovely photograph of your whole family on the upper deck chilling with afternoon cocktails :) Now the season is over, we will be doing a "deep cleaning" before the next season starts along with some new appliances, A/C's and new wine glasses, that always seem to define "the celebration has started" upon crashing to the floor :) We look forward to accommodating you all again in the near future. Warm regards from the whole Vista Azul staff.
