About Peter and Andrea Kent
Peter Kent, arrived in Bocas Del Toro, Panama in 1993, one of the first foreigners to settle in the area. Originally from England, he has lived in Spain, France, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Costa Rica, on top of many years spent traveling the world. Throughout his life, he worked on a wide range of international construction projects, gaining experience. Peter has designed, developed and constructed numerous homes throughout the Bocas Del Toro Islands. His construction experience allows him to navigate the challenging development process of Panama, while his keen eye results in inspirational designs for each of the unique homes. Andrea Kent is originally from Northern California, but lived in Costa Rica as a teenager. Her parents own a Resort in Costa Rica, they traveled to Bocas and met Peter, became good friends and ten years later met their daughter Andrea (for the first time). Fell in love, were married and now enjoy their son Orion. The Interior Designer graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California and has since applied her unique creative talents to both commercial and residential design projects, domestically and abroad. After founding Hawking Design Group, she became a reoccurring featured designer on the Home and Garden Television Network. The Kentways homes, including Vista Azul Lodge, benefit from Andrea's ability to marry traditional Caribbean style with more contemporary design and conveniences. Not a single design element goes untouched, resulting in inspired homes, built in the islands of Bocas Del Toro.
Peter and Andrea Kent purchased this House in 1994
Why Peter and Andrea Kent chose Bocas del Toro Province
Peter bought the 100 acre property back in '94, 'I knew where I would eventually build my residence. I waited for my soul partner to cross my path so as to build our dream home together but the time was not yet. So I started to build, when the interior stage was upon me, I met my wife who turned out to be an interior designer'.
What makes this House unique
The spectacular setting of the creative Lodge with the Caribbean sea at the doorstep and the jungle at the back door gives this property a uniqueness, plus the Lodge is just a five minute boat ride to the charming, vibrant town of Bocas. It would take six months to explore and experience the islands fully. With a multitude of local activities to keep your stay entertaining. With also access to spa treatments, a getaway for rejuvenation, away from the stress of work and home.

Vista Azul exceeded our expectations. I have been to Bocas about 12 times and this is my favorite place so far, the house is amazing and the beach, just steps from the front door, is calm, clear and great for lounging and swimming. There are restaurants a short walk away, a store about a 15 min walk away, and Bocas town is a short 5 min boat ride away. If a boat is not at the dock and you don't want to wait to call one you can walk 10 minutes to the Aqua Lounge and there is always a boat there. I would bring Deet as some members of our group were annoyed by the sand flies, locally known as chitras. Other reviews are accurate that the beach is not private and because it is such a beautiful beach people come during the day but you will have the beach to yourself in the morning and evening. If you want a more secluded experience the trade off is that you will be 20-40 minutes away from restaurants, stores, and town. The man that watches the house, Armadio, is a tremendous resource and will build a fire on the beach, call a water taxi, help arrange for a cook - anything you need.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write your posting, to which also helps future potential guests. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in Bocas and we look forward to accommodating you for your 13 visit to Bocas 😎
Warm regards from all the Vista Azul staff, Andrea and Peter
Location, location, location!
White sand beach out the front door and beautiful views of the water from every room in the house -- This place seemed too good to be true! It was perfect for our family vacation. The staff was so helpful and kind. Catching a water taxi was easy. Our cook was amazing! ... and Bibi's restaurant, just down the beach, was a perfect place to find a refreshing fruity drink!
Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Amazing location right on the beach!
This house is “one of those” that is even better in person than it appears in the photos. The bedrooms are expansive with great private baths and the view to the jungle makes the house open up even more. The beach on which the house is located is a “public beach” as other reviewers mentioned. That didn’t negatively affect us, and we actually enjoyed speaking with quite a few locals. The only issue is when they used the deck or would come up onto the deck, but it should be noted they think the house is a bar or restaurant-asking for agua or cerveza or basura or banos. Yes, there are “private property” signs, but most were innocent mistakes and we would point them down the beach. The snorkeling is pretty average in front of the house, a bit harrowing with boat traffic, but we brought an orange buoy along which helped the taxi drivers locate us (we left at the house for others use). We also took a snorkel tour which is worth the time and money. The location on the beach is prime real estate and we gave out the rental information to many other tourists interested. Agree with other reviewers that the kitchen/dining could use additional pots, pans, cookie sheets, etc and better lighting but when traveling we’ve learned to improvise. We caught fish two days with a fishing captain set up thru Armodio and prepared some amazing dishes in that kitchen. I can’t say enough about Armodio and his family, he truly made our vacation memorable (and his children too!) Armodio’s wife even baked us homemade bread a few days! It should be said, we had absolutely no water issues, and we had 8 occupants showering along with dishes, flushing, etc. However, one negative comment outside the control of the owners, there is a bar on the island that starts to play thumping music anywhere from midnight through the early morning?? With the screens on the upper windows, it was hard to drown out that music. Yes, there are sand flies, but there aren’t many locations left in central America that are sand fly free-Bring your repellent! Highly recommend this beach house!
Wonderful that you enjoyed your time in Bocas and the lodge.
Thank you for taking the time to write your posting with good information for future guests.
The snorkeling directly in front of the lodge is average, but if you swim a bit further out to the edge of the reef where it drops-off, you will find a lot more activity.
I have requested more kitchen utensils to be purchased.
The inside is being repainted, so the lodge will have a new fresh look.
The coconut bread sure does taste good 😊.
You can also wave down the fishermen/divers paddling out in their dugouts in the morning, to stop by in the afternoon with their catch to purchase.
The trick with the sand fly’s, is to understand and be aware of the conditions when they come out, and then move indoors.
Enjoy your summer.
Warm regards from the whole Vista Azul staff.
Great Location but disappointing stay
We landed and Peter the owner spotted our group as I think he was on his way out and told us there was an issue of limited water at the house and on the Island. Ely would explain, so I talked with her while waiting for our luggage . I was told we only had 450 gallons for water left for our 4 days and 10 of us.
She recommended we not wash clothes, keep showers very short and not to do too many dishes. We planned to cook as we had people with dietary restrictions.
Everyday we were worried about how much water we had.
The morning of our departure we had run out, only 2 people had showered ,toilet could not be flushed and used drinking water to brush our teeth.
They did pay for our laundry to be done in town but had to pay for water taxis back and forth. They supplied us with paper plates, cups and spoons, but when we ran out we had to pay of them. Armodio was great about getting groceries ,our laundry and cutting fresh coconut for us.... thank you very much.
The house has outstanding views and great access to clear waters for snorkeling but as you are close to the pier there are lots for water taxis coming and going . You really have to watch out. We were there over a weekend and that was mistake. There were tourists and locals walking by and chilling on the beach during the day, it got very crowded and noisy with tons of trash were left behind on the beach. Sunday morning 6am we had a water taxis bringing 6 drunk individuals with blaring music. They were on the beach and in the water for about an hour. As the house has small windows thru out with only screens ,the noise was an issue.
People get very close to the house so privacy was also an issue especially if you wanted to sit out on the front deck.
The kitchen cabinets are in bad condition ,hard to open, some are broken and skillets, pot and pans are in need of replacement.
Sand flies are a real problem.
Overall not what we had expected.
We sympathize for the circumstances during your stay in Bocas.
In the 25 years since I arrived in Bocas, the water situation has never been this drastic. It has not rained in Bocas for over 7 weeks now, and to compound the situation, the water department told me that only one of the four well/pumps are working. I’m sure many other vacation rental owners have been receiving similar postings as yours, as the whole town/area is in the same situation. We were actually lucky to find someone who was able to sell us some water which we transported to the lodge for your stay. It did rain one late afternoon before you arrived, only to watch agonizingly as the showers pass by about a mile or two away.
Your stay coincided with a school holiday period and with the lodge and the beautiful beach only five minutes away from Bocas town and its 10,000 + population, you have a ying-yang situation. Either have privacy but be a long way away from town or be close to town but have to share the beach.
The small windows you refer to, are “lucetas”, which are a wooden carving with fly screen (no glass). The purpose of the 94 lucetas throughout the lodge, apart from enjoying the artistic creativeness, is to allow a cross breeze.
Some guests enjoy watching or joining in the fun with the locals in the water, which is usually a fun happy time and some don’t. The six drunks arriving at the beach at 6am is very much a “one off” situation. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever encountered that situation before.
We sincerely sympathize, unfortunately some aspects are out of our control.

Truly an island paradise
This property was certainly above and beyond our expectations, though we had seen the beautiful online pictures and read every review. Peter was so prompt in answering our questions and so patient with the details, always including even more than we had asked about. Ely twice arranged excursions for us that we felt were incomparable and you need the insider information for the contacts. She also arranged local ladies to cook for us, starting with one evening, then two, then four! These dinners became such an important and convenient part of our family experience. Peter's place is so beautiful and spacious. Everyone of us could do our own thing, and of course, being right on the water with a beautiful sandy beach was an incredible pleasure. Armodio was there to answer questions, help us get fish from locals, show us a sloth, and give us al sorts of information. Ely, Armodio, the local cooking ladies, and the water taxis fellas
were all gems. We have traveled a lot, but this was definitely our most special place ever. Big resorts as a whole do not tempt us, so this was exactly our kind of place,
one to dream about! Thank you, Peter! All of us agreed it could not have been better.
Wow, what can we say, except you feel the same way as we do when we are there. It really is a very special home, location etc. We are so please to hear you all enjoyed yourself, awesome. Thank you very much for your lovely posting and we look forward to accommodating you again in the future. Warm regards from all the Vista Azul Lodge staff.
Beautiful house with outstanding staff and surf!
Our 2 families experience at the Vista Azul Lodge on Carneros Island was wonderful from our first contact with Peter regarding staying at the lodge until receiving our damage deposit refund in full.
The house is stunning with outstanding views and great access to high quality surf breaks. You can paddle out from the house to Black Rock or take short water taxi rides from the dock out in front of the house to Carneros (the point) or Paunch/Dumpers on the main island (Colon Island) or even further surf breaks.
Peter has great local staff to meet you at the airport, bring you to the house and orient you to the house and local surroundings. They can connect you with water taxi drivers, set up housekeeping and grocery shopping / meal preparation services, and even keep a close watch on the house to maintain security of the premises.
All in all, a wonderful stay and we hope to return one day!
We are all pleased to hear you all enjoyed your stay at Vista Azul Lodge, an every lasting memory.
Look forward to accommodating you again in the future. Warm regards from all the staff, Andrea and Peter.
