We offer a spacious, and unique home on the beach with three separate en suite guest bedrooms. Two bedrooms have a king size bed, the third one has two twin beds with canopy. They all are tucked away for privacy. Each has its own bathroom and deck or patio and enjoys a full view of the Caribbean. Situated on over 80 feet (25 meters) of quiet beachfront with hammocks swinging from the palapa. It is the ideal location to relax, snorkel, or explore the Riviera Maya.

Located an hour and a half south of Cancun, minutes from Tulum, Tankah Bay is a small paradise. Our private access beach road has 24-hour security. Quiet and very safe while amenities are easily accessible on foot or in a ten-minute car ride.

We designed a house where everyone can enjoy the spacious common areas and yet retire to their room for complete privacy. Each bedroom has ample closet space, a safe and a high quality Hunter fan.

As you enter the house you are stunned by the view of the Caribbean and the expansive ground floor.

You will take in the dramatic, circular living room with custom designed palapa (thatched) roof. A series of French doors open to the beach, yet the living room retains privacy. To the left is the light-filled dining room, with large French doors, which extends outside to a furnished patio.

Conveniently, the well-equipped kitchen is directly adjacent to the living room, making entertaining a delight. It features black granite counter tops, All-Clad cookware and major appliances. A central island is the perfect place for a quick snack or to gather cooks and guests. From the kitchen you may look out to the water or turn around and face the luxurious garden.

On the opposite side is the beach level master suite, with a king size bed, private bathroom and a deep blue tiled shower. A sliding door connects this shower to a protected outside shower. The room’s French doors open to a patio with a hanging hammock and lounge chairs.

As you wind up the circular stairway you reach the wide-open second floor landing with an interior balcony overlooking the living room. On each side is a bedroom. The master suite has a king size bed, a private furnished shaded deck, a private bathroom with two sinks and a white and green tiled garden shower with local plants.

The other bedroom has two canopied twin size beds, a private furnished shaded deck, and a turquoise tiled bathroom. Each bedroom has ample closet space, a safe and a high quality Hunter fan. All bedrooms have ceiling fans and optimize the ocean breezes with maximum ventilation.

The second floor stairway takes you to the roof where you can enjoy views of Tankah Bay, the jungle, or you can watch the ospreys and pelicans dive. You may also enjoy the sunset with a Margarita in hand or make it your private sunbathing area.

On the garden side of the house is a palapa covered outside kitchen with a wood table, gas barbecue, sink and counter space. You will have easy access from the kitchen door. It is an ideal place to cook any time of day.

Villa Mariposa is tastefully decorated with local artifacts, well maintained, and in excellent condition. All the woodwork (furniture, windows, doors, closets etc.) in the house is handcrafted of mahogany, giving the house a warm comfortable yet sophisticated atmosphere. Throughout the house the floor is “conchuela”, a 42 million years old fossil stone from the Yucatan. We carefully designed the house to provide views, natural ventilation, privacy and large living areas. From any room – even your shower! - You can enjoy the changing shades of the Caribbean.

From the white sand beach just footsteps away you may swim, snorkel, or take the two kayaks on the bay. You will love sunbathing in hammocks and lounge chairs, or enjoy the ocean view sitting under the shady beach palapa.

Our caretakers, Luis and Nery, live on site in a separate home on the property. They provide five day a week maid and gardening service. They can prepare delicious Mexican meals for an additional fee.

The villa is located between Akumal and Tulum, offering the convenience of shops and entertainment while staying on a quiet secluded and safe beach. We are steps away from 2 restaurants and swimming at the magical Manatee Cenote (swimming hole).

We are only a 10-minute drive to restaurants, shops, Tulum ruins, and other gorgeous beaches (Sian Kaan). Coba ruins are a 45 minute drive, Valladolid, a small colonial town, is a wonderful day trip and famous Chichen Itza is a 3 hour excursion. The region is renowned for its fly-fishing opportunities. We have spotted bonefish in our own bay!

Villa Mariposa is a quiet, peaceful sanctuary surrounded by extraordinary beauty where you will have an easy and relaxing tropical vacation.

About Veronique Fourment

We are a bilingual, bi-cultural family who loves to come back to Tankah. Our first child started coming here when she was 2 years old, the youngest one made her first trip at 10 months! Now in College our daughter keeps coming back to this quiet paradise. They both learned scuba diving in our Bay. We live in San Francisco and we come to Villa Mariposa as often as possible. We love to share our home with friends and family. It has a magical effect on our souls and brings our family together.

Veronique Fourment purchased this villa in 1998

Why Veronique Fourment chose Quintana Roo

After coming back year after year to the Riviera Maya, we purchased the land in 1998. We spent time studying the climate and the location. In 2001 we built a home where materials were sourced locally. The house is perfectly adapted to the land and climate. Every aspect of the house has been carefully thought through. We take pride in its original design and unexpected features.

What makes this villa unique

We love the peace, surrounding natural beauty and the people. The water is warm, the snorkeling wonderful and the birds put on a show every day. For our daily exercise, we go swimming in Manate Cenote - a fresh water inlet-. Early morning, you'll have it to yourself and see the tiny needle fish, wild orchids, crabs etc.. Later in the afternoon you can watch the birds returning for the night and listen to their calls. You can take the kids on a kayak in the Bay or on the cenote. Children can play safely on the beach or at the water's edge. When you've had enough relaxing you can go explore the ruins, other beaches and even go on an inland day trip. There is always something or nothing to do!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time at Villa Mariposa. It is a fabulous property in a fabulous location. The flat water of Tankah Bay was great for kayaking and snorkeling. We kayaked four or five times, and snorkeled at various locations within the Bay, including the outflow area from the Cenote. Hanging out in beach palapa and hammocks was totally relaxing as well.

Location was about 100 meters from the lovely Cenote, and we dined at both the Blue Sky and Casa Cenote restaurants a few times, generally for breakfast on our way out, but also for dinner once each. Both were great.

The location of the villa, just a few minutes to the city of Tulum, was also great. We went several times...Amy is a professional chef and part of her vacation protocol is always to shop for, purchase, and prepare seafood and quality produce.... mission accomplished. Very fun.

Using the villa as our base of operations, we drove back up to Playa del Carmen (not a great experience as we are not big shopping freaks). Akumal beach (ok, but too crowded after our languid hours at the Villa), Tulum, and Coba. Both these last two were interesting for me since I am a retired archaeologist for the US NPS and have been on a couple of international teams working with the Mexican institute of archaeology (INAH) and the government of Belize.

Although the decorative elements of the villa were great, I was particularly enchanted by the Mayan glyphs hanging on the wall near the powder room, and looked all over for somewhere to purchase something like them...without success, until the drive to Coba where we found them en route them and purchased several to bring home after he showed me some illustrated classical Mayan archaeology texts.

Returning from our travelling experiences to the villa itself...it has an elegant design, has plenty of room, and is well decorated. Airflow negated the need for air conditioning. Setting was very secure with the gate guards, and the in-bedroom safes worked great. Being steps from the beach was a real plus.

Luis and Nery did a great job meeting our needs, reliable, efficient, friendly, and they tended to be low profile although we were often around much of the morning. They also cooked for us one night...it was very good.

We had a great time and would highly recommend Villa Mariposa to anyone seeking a place to stay in the Tulum area. We would definitely stay there again since it has so much to offer. You should be very proud of such a lovely home

Rooms With A View

  • 4 of 5

We met from different 3 different parts of the globe at Villa Mariposa and had a very relaxing week, enjoying magnificent views from every room. The 3 bedrooms are comfortable and we enjoyed quiet times, each from our own balconies if desired many an afternoon lazing and chatting in the hammocks, shaded from the sun, only a stone's throw from the water. One of the highlights of the day was to watch the pelicans as they hovered and dove for fish just off shore. Villa Mariposa and the caretakers there met all our expectations, including a lovely 'in home meal' prepared for us and our laundry being cleaned, folded and returned within hours (both for a reasonable fee). There was some concern when we, three women, booked a house away from the throng of Tulum Beach however we immediately felt safe with the presence of the security guards at the gatehouse, who cheerfully meet you as you are coming and going on the main road to Villa Mariposa. In essence, it was a great place for 3 friends to meet, relax and feel at home

A glorious home base

  • 5 of 5

All the good things people have said about Villa Mariposa are 100% true. All 3 bedrooms are beautiful, spacious & removed enough from the main area to make everybody feel they had their space. Being 'slightly padded' Canadians, we were concerned how we'd fare without air conditioning but it was fine. The ocean breeze graces every bedroom and the fans help too. You might want to bring earplugs as the jungle is not always quiet - lol. There are a few birds who are rehearsing to be alarm clocks and it made us snicker most mornings as they did their vocal warm ups.

Luis & Nery are wonderful caretakers & their kids are polite and sweet. I wish we'd had Luis cook for us but we never quite got our act together.

We love the friendly, quiet road where Villa Mariposa is situated and having security at the entrance just enhances how safe the area is. Strolling down to Blue Sky Pizza for a meal or exploring Casa Cenote were convenient treats.

Our group ranged in age from 17 to 61. All of us love to get out and explore but I must say that the best days were spent at Villa Mariposa... the days when we'd wake up and leisurely have coffee on the patio, letting the sun and sea greet us. Eventually we'd grab our snorkel gear and swim out in search of another stunning adventure. We saw stingrays, eagle rays, hundreds of fish... we'd stay out watching for hours. Eventually we'd drag ourselves out of the water and flop into the hammocks under the palapa with a cold drink. Lunch, siesta, then more lazy beach time watching the sun go down. True peace.

Thank you, Veronique & family, for sharing this magnificent gem with us.

Relaxing holiday week with our family in great setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful, relaxing stay at Villa Mariposa, a comfortable, well maintained beach home overlooking the Tankah Bay. It is tastefully decorated, beautifully reflecting the culture of the setting. It matched the description and photos and exceeded our expectations. The owner provided us with helpful information and tips in advance of our arrival and was easy to communicate with throughout. Wonderful caretakers live on the property. We explored the Tulum area by car and made trips into the village, the playa, ruins, restaurants etc. But we also enjoyed our time relaxing at the house and could have used an extra day doing just that! The hammocks under the palapa were prized spots and just steps from the bay, but the house is laid out in a way that gives plenty of privacy and options, inside and out, for our family of six (5 adults and one teen). Yes, the beach and bay are rocky as described, and we followed instructions to bring water shoes and made use of the kayaks. Possibly due to the tides or time of year, the edge of the bay was a bit closer that in the photos, but that was not a problem! (There are other beaches to visit in the Tulum/Akumal area for a different sort of beach day if desired.)

If we return to the Tulum area we would definitely hope to book Villa Mariposa again!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review! Glad your family had a wonderful time! A few very strong storms have eroded the beaches along the coast that's why the water is higher up on our beach. We hope to welcome you again at Villa Mariposa.

Excellent Value and fun fun fun

Spring Break 2014 Actually late March 2014--just unpacked and had time to write:

Very quiet beach seemed like our very own....Nobody selling trinkets. Relatively calm water protected by a distant reef accessible via a provided Kayak or two. Good snorkeling and a cenote almost next door. The water is far enough to feel comfortable if you have small children and close enough to hear and jump in 100 times a day. The house is plenty big for six adults. The living room is very comfortable for all......... if you ever bother to come inside. The weather was so pleasant we barely had time to sleep. We cooked most of our meals on site in the well appointed kitchen and outdoor BBQ. Several quiet restaurants also within walking distance. The best was the pizza place. The tiki hut on the beach and hammock were a hit. The owners were quick with all communication, fair, and honest in all respects. The on site care takers were enthusiastic, polite, and take excellent care of the dwelling and grounds.

Lovely stay in Tankah

  • 4 of 5

We arrived at the Villa Mariposa with our teenaged girls after a short stay in the authentic town of Vallalodid. Villa Mariposa has a nice aesthetic with lovely views and grounds beautifully tended by the caretakers. Tranquil, breezy and outside the fray of a now crowded Tulum, the Villa is nicely situated for day trips to local ruins, cenotes and lagoons. A beautiful cenote with it's beach front restaurant (and killer margaritas!) just down the street, enabled us to stay and feel more like locals and less like tourists. It was wonderful to see our now "grown up girls" playing and relaxing like children again.

Wonderful Stay in Tankah Bay

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from two weeks stay at Villa Mariposa. House was just as described but even better! Excellent communication with owner prior to arrival (directions, grocery shopping and recommended restaurants) to confirmation upon arrival that everything was satisfactory! Location couldn't have been better....walking distance to restaurants for breakfast, lunch & dinner not to mention the nearby Cenote and short ride to Tulum Pueblo & Tulum Playa. However Tankah Bay is so beautiful it's difficult to leave the beach !!! Villa had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. Caretakers Luis and Nery do a wonderful job in maintaining the lovely property. Villa Mariposa MUY TRANQUILO! Can't wait to return!
