About Laura Strehlau

Steve and Laura Strehlau have owned their property on Whidbey Island since 1989. Their log home has been featured in local magazines and their garden has been on the Whidbey Island Garden Tour in 2007 & 2011. This newly built cabin (800 sq ft) is located on the six acres on which their log home is situated. They share their time between their home on Whidbey Island and their home on Maui. They also love to travel and meet new people throughout the world. Animals are a big part of their lives with sheep, goats, a cat and two Golden Retrievers sharing their home.

Laura Strehlau purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Laura Strehlau chose Whidbey Island

With over six acres of forest and beach, we wanted to share our land with others who want a bucolic setting for a vacation. Our vacation rental has just been completed (spring 2010) and is landscaped and ready for more guests. The home is bright and airy though it is located in a stand of 2nd growth Douglas Firs and Western Red Cedars. It offers both the woodlands and the beach, making it an ideal vacation rental. The setting is extremely private and quiet for a retreat like atmosphere. Trail and stairs meander thru huge evergreen and fern filled forest to our secluded beach.

What makes this cabin unique

Beach walking, crabbing in season, salmon fishing and picnicking are just some of the many outdoor activities here. We have even been awakened by barking sea lions and viewed grey whales in the Harbor on occasion. Bald Eagles fly on currents and deer are regular visitors. Being close to Seattle and Everett, Whidbey Island is an ideal getaway for anyone looking for a tranquil weekend or longer vacation. Our village of Langley offers excellent restaurants, shopping, art and entertainment and is only six miles from our door.

Home away from home

Once again we had a wonderful stay here. The home is incredibly clean and the outdoor space is divine. Great home base to explore all parts of the island and very close to a great grocery store for picking up items. The home is so comfy and has so much of what you will need including a washer and dryer and even firewood for the fire pit. Walk to the beach is not for kids or elderly. If you plan to use this make sure to bring good hiking shoes. If the walk isn't for you, Double Bluff beach is about a 10 minute drive and fabulous! We will absolutely be back again!

Cozy, well-appointed retreat in the woods

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Heron's Roost for 5 days celebrating our anniversary. The place was as described - the cabin is cozy, well-appointed and very clean. The landscaping is beautifully done incorporating native plantings in a clearing in the woods. There are a couple of homes close by - the owners live on the 5 acre property - but there is complete privacy on the cabin area and the woods conceal the nearby homes. It does have a "retreat" feel, and we enjoyed the fire pit and hanging out in the gazebo in the evenings. We went down to the beach a couple of times. It is a little precarious going down there, but well worth it. The kitchen is well stocked (though a dutch oven for steaming the local mussels would be a nice addition - but I cook way more than most people). It's super-quiet and dark at night. The location is a great base for exploring the island - 15 minutes to Langley, 30 minutes to Coupeville. We hiked in all the parks - the South Whidbey State Park was particularly delightful with it's giant trees, heard some music at DjangoFest, and had some excellent brunches in both Langley and Coupeville. I would recommend this property to others wanting a peaceful place to stay on Whidbey.

Would highly recommend to anyone that enjoys majestic trees, privacy and beach front access. Good spot to get to ferry and shopping etc. Love the town of Langley.

Cosy cottage in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our short visit to Heron's Roost and a chance to explore Whidbey Island. The cottage was well appointed and in a lovely private wooded setting. Well designed and comfortable home with a lot of outdoor space for relaxing. The walk down to the beach was a real adventure and not for the faint hearted. Highly recommended!

Really nice cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the cabin. Couldn't have been happier! The kids loved Pele the dog and feeding the goats and sheep. We made the treck down to the beach and must mention that it is not for the faint of heart or for anyone who has a fear of heights:) the cabin is so quaint and nestled magically in the woods, it was like something from a fairy tale. Everything we were hoping for and more. What a fabulous trip!

What a lovely little retreat

  • 5 of 5

This place was a wonderful little spot. The cabin had lots of sweet and thoughtful touches, bathrobes, artwork, fireplace, granola bars and bottles of water. They even had food bowls and towels, and a list of off leash walking areas for those who bring their dogs! We really felt that we were guests in their home. I haven't even mentioned the outside, which is absolutely delightful with little whimsical art pieces and specimen plants everywhere you look. It was both special and inspiring.

The house is very central to everything we wanted to do and close to the store, some good restaurants, etc. The path to the beach is an adventure, but it's a beautiful walk through the woods. We loved using the fire pit at night and listening to all the birds. It was all the things we enjoy about camping, without actually camping. Yay!!! Laura made sure we had everything we needed with restaurant recommendations, beach hike information, and other vital info.

My kids never wanted to leave, as my 4 year old said, "I want to stay at this holiday house forever, mama". Needless to say, we'll be back to this little gem.
