About Laura Strehlau

Steve and Laura Strehlau have owned their property on Whidbey Island since 1989. Their log home has been featured in local magazines and their garden has been on the Whidbey Island Garden Tour in 2007 & 2011. This newly built cabin (800 sq ft) is located on the six acres on which their log home is situated. They share their time between their home on Whidbey Island and their home on Maui. They also love to travel and meet new people throughout the world. Animals are a big part of their lives with sheep, goats, a cat and two Golden Retrievers sharing their home.

Laura Strehlau purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Laura Strehlau chose Whidbey Island

With over six acres of forest and beach, we wanted to share our land with others who want a bucolic setting for a vacation. Our vacation rental has just been completed (spring 2010) and is landscaped and ready for more guests. The home is bright and airy though it is located in a stand of 2nd growth Douglas Firs and Western Red Cedars. It offers both the woodlands and the beach, making it an ideal vacation rental. The setting is extremely private and quiet for a retreat like atmosphere. Trail and stairs meander thru huge evergreen and fern filled forest to our secluded beach.

What makes this cabin unique

Beach walking, crabbing in season, salmon fishing and picnicking are just some of the many outdoor activities here. We have even been awakened by barking sea lions and viewed grey whales in the Harbor on occasion. Bald Eagles fly on currents and deer are regular visitors. Being close to Seattle and Everett, Whidbey Island is an ideal getaway for anyone looking for a tranquil weekend or longer vacation. Our village of Langley offers excellent restaurants, shopping, art and entertainment and is only six miles from our door.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Once again we had a wonderful stay here. The home is incredibly clean and the outdoor space is divine. Great home base to explore all parts of the island and very close to a great grocery store for picking up items. The home is so comfy and has so much of what you will need including a washer and dryer and even firewood for the fire pit. Walk to the beach is not for kids or elderly. If you plan to use this make sure to bring good hiking shoes. If the walk isn't for you, Double Bluff beach is about a 10 minute drive and fabulous! We will absolutely be back again!

A sanctuary in the woods

  • 5 of 5

Your cabin is wonderful! Loved the setting and although we were in a cabin, it was great to have all the updated features and comforts of home. Loved visiting with the goats (the curly one was especially friendly) and chickens. Wish we had met you as well! Thank you for the suggestion of eating at Gordon's; our anniversary dinner was fabulous. We will return; thank you!

The perfect place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent our first visit to Whidbey Island in this rental for four nights. The property was absolutely beautiful and private. The inside of the house has every modern amenity a renter could want. We had everything we needed to cook meals and wash laundry. The path to the beach is well cared for and it's closer than you would think! The property was halfway between Langley and Freeland (10 minutes) so the options for food and entertainment were doubled. Highly recommend!

truly an oasis

  • 5 of 5

the herons roost was beautiful. A cabin in the woods above the bay. Dave (the Caretaker) was very helpful and nice. He provided us w/ info regarding parks and hikes that we might take. He even got us a detailed a map to get around and highlighted areas of interest. the fresh eggs every morning were a bonus. The cabin was well equipped and very cozy. Thanks again. can't wait to come back.

Lovely spot, well appointed cabin

  • 4 of 5

Overall this is a truly lovely property. The cabin itself is cozy, comfortable and quiet. The grounds are whimsical and fun to explore, with many surprising elements spread throughout the woods. Besides the human amenities, they also provide pet amenities, which was an unexpected bonus!

I suggest getting up and outside before sunrise one morning (for me that was 5:45am) - the chorus of owls was astounding! But it's a slim window - once the sunrise started around 6:00am the owls went silent.

Accessing the beach from the property is quite a challenge, and a pair of gloves wouldn't be a bad idea (lots of splintery wood handholds). It is definitely not for anyone who is isn't in fairly good shape. Our elderly dog definitely couldn't make it down.

The cabin is nicely furnished and has just about everything we needed except a toaster, but we used the oven's broiler. The bathroom is fine, and the beds were nice and comfy.

Really nothing to do with the cabin or property was the weather in that area. We had never been to Whidbey and it seems that the side of the peninsula we were on was the windward side possibly. It was super windy and much cooler than we expected. Also, the cabin is in trees, so it never really warmed up. We had brought kayaks, and Steve lent us the boat launch key, but the weekend we were there the tide was the lowest all year, so if you plan to do any boating you'd want to research that (we didn't!). Although we liked exploring the beach from the club area, so be sure to ask for that if beach walking is for you, definitely an easier access than the stairs on the property itself.

Really, the addition of a hot tub would put this place over the top (5 stars!) since it would provide an additional option to be warm and outside in the woods!
