Also within walking distance from Shoes Off is a large children’s playground, sand volleyball court and day camp facilities at the Bald Head Island Club.
Our home was first listed on VRBO in April 2010.
Shoes Off is a family home with the focus on just that…..Family.
Bald Head Island is the most family friendly place we’ve ever been.
Summer weekly rentals in our home include temporary memberships to BOTH the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club. The Shoals Club is situated on the southeast tip of the island, where the convergence of South and East Beaches form the “Point” of Cape Fear, one of the most beautiful ocean views on the USA’s Atlantic coast. You can literally stand on a two-foot wide point of sand, with waves coming from both the southwest and northeast, on the very tip of the Cape.
Weekly rentals include all cleaning charges. Provided to all Shoes Off guests with our compliments are linens, bath and beach towels, bath tissue, paper towels and trash bags. We have a well-equipped kitchen with service for 12 people and seating for even more. We maintain an open guest cabinet in the kitchen with an array of cooking spices, oil, coffee filters and more. We’ve rented beach homes in the past that were completely void of most everything………Not a paper towel, salt-shaker or roll of TP in sight. We are pleased to offer you the opposite of that. Just bring your bathing suit, your flip-flops, your favorite refreshment, your iPad/Pod and a good book.
Our home is designed on a reverse floor plan with living, dining, screened porch areas and incredible ocean views on the 3rd floor. The home features two master suites, and two other bedrooms on the 2nd level, all with direct deck access and ocean views from each bedroom. One bedroom is specifically arranged for children, featuring bunk beds, sleeper sofa, some toys, Spectrum Cable and Apple TV for streaming.
We also provide one high-chair and two Pack & Plays.
On the deck, just outside of the 3rd floor kitchen/living area door is a 48” stainless steel gas grill than can handle outdoor cooking for the largest of families or groups.
We offer large flat screen monitors and Spectrum cable TV in all of the bedrooms. The 3rd floor living area features a 50” Panasonic Plasma TV, Spectrum cable, Apple TV and a Bose Lifestyle System audio home theater with Bluetooth audio connectivity.
Our master suite includes a 24” iMac computer. Wireless internet access is provided throughout the home, with a signal that can reach the beach if that’s of interest. The fishing from the beach is sometimes excellent to outstanding. We recommend that you unplug and take a fishing rod instead.
Shoes Off offers an elevator. While not completely handicap accessible, the elevator makes the 3 story climb easy on the knees for anyone who might have trouble with stairs. We use the elevator primarily for hauling luggage, groceries and supplies to the 2nd floor bedrooms and 3rd floor living and dining areas. The elevator is exceptionally helpful in this regard.
We provide bikes for children and adults, a baby jogger, kids bike trailer, beach chairs, some beach toys, a few kites, sand spikes for your fishing rods and a full size beach umbrella or two.
The loop road behind Shoes Off (Snowy Egret and Black Skimmer) is a fantastic place for children to bike and skate safely in an area with virtually no traffic. Two of our children learned to ride bikes there. Two of our children’s bikes have training wheels available. The entire Island is also a fantastic place to walk, jog, bike and skate. Some contractor vehicles are allowed on the roads during the weekdays but you’ll mostly just see and hear the quiet hum of the occasional electric golf cart passing by.
We can provide you with information for children’s day camps at the Bald Head Island Club and the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Both offer terrific children’s programs and can provide Mom and Dad with a few hours of peace and quiet, one of the real beauties of a vacation on Bald Head Island.
Vehicular transportation on the island is limited to golf carts. We offer one 6-seat cart and one 4-seat cart.
The photographs of Shoes Off hardly do the place justice. It’s simply an incredible home for your family and friends to unwind, relax, retreat and recharge. Bald Head Island is unto itself. Come and feel for yourself. You’ve never seen the sunset like you will see it from here.

About Steve Montgomery
We hope to have you as our guest soon. Steve and Kids - Madeline, Maxwell and Eleanor.
Why Steve Montgomery chose South Beach
It's the most family friendly place we've ever been. Having our extended family scattered from the Midwest to the northeast USA, Shoes Off has been very friendly to ours. The place is the ultimate magnet in our selfishly attracting friends and family to come and visit.
What makes this House unique
It's darker at night than any place we've seen. The sky at night is bright like you can't imagine. It's safe for our kids and the dog to run free. The Island is quiet. The Island's ecosystem is diverse, from oceanfront beach, extraordinary marine life, 12,000 acre old-growth maritime forest to the marshes and creeks of the lower Cape Fear River Basin. The fishing can be excellent most months of the year, with always something biting even in the warmest months. The focus on nature and conservation here is a terrific element for our three young children to experience.

Our entire experience with this property was AMAZING!
Steve Montgomery, YOU ROCK! Thank you for being so kind and sharing your wonderful home with us!
Wonderful Family Escape!
After a 15 year absence from Bald Head Island, we decided to return with our teenage children and had a wonderful experience at this home. We fell in love with the island and the home, filling it with laughter and memories. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms, bikes were great and the golf cart worked perfectly getting us around the island. The owner was responsive and very accommodating. Highly recommended.
Thanks a million for the accolades. We enjoyed having you and your family in our home. We'd love to have to back. Our housekeepers commented that after your departure they walked in and felt almost not needed!
Hearing your comments about "falling in love with our home, filling it up with laughter and memories" warmed my 3 kids (13,13 &12) and my heart. It's exactly what we hope to offer for our guests. A place for families to make memories for a lifetime, while disconnecting from this oftentimes crazier-by-the-day world.
Perhaps, don't wait another 15 years to come back again and enjoy this very special slice of paradise we call Bald Head Island. You know the door code. Just let us know!
Good location . Owner answered questions in a timely manner .
Family sunsets and good times
We have travelled to BHI for years, renting on various parts of the island. This home is in a fantastic location with direct views of the ocean and sunsets over the water. Very close to the BHI club. Steve goes out of his way to make the stay comfortable and provides everything (much more than most rentals) needed for fun inside and outside of the house, including Apple TV, two golf carts, cooking supplies, bikes, umbrellas, beach cart, and chairs. Also, rental comes with temporary memberships to both clubs. Perfect home for two families.
The island is perfect the house needs some love. We enjoyed membership to both clubs this year.
The home is across the street from the beach. However, it is NOT 38 steps from the beach. It is maybe 38 steps from the end of the drive way to the very beginning of the beach access path.
Wifi in the house is awful except in the main living room. It definitely did not reach the beach. And while its nice to say things like "unplug, don't worry about internet", this is 2017 and you need the internet, even on vacation.
As for the condition of the house, it was okay, but a bit run down. The exterior paint was in need of repair and the interior paint could use some work too (we actually heard a couple drive by in their golf cart and comment on how the house needed to be painted). There were areas of water damage on the ceiling and mildew in lots of spots. Lots doors stuck or didn't close properly, windows would open but not close. I literally had to repair the screen on one door because, frankly it was embarrassing to watch it flap in the breeze. The furniture was just okay in most every room, however, the beds in the masters were actually not bad, except for the dirty sheets (which I blame on the cleaners, not the owner). Basically, you can tell that this is a rental. It does not feel like the kind of house that someone lovingly takes care of.
Also note that the golf carts are not that great, they work fine and it's nice not to have to rent one, but you'll be driving around in the equivalent of 90s Ford Escorts. One of the keys literally crumbled when we tried to start one cart (the owner did not respond to our request for help on this, luckily we found a spare key that worked). If it rains, there is not enough plastic to cover the 6 person cart and there was no plastic for the 4 person cart, so you'll get wet if you need to leave the house.
The visitors that we had on a daily basis in the form of cockroaches, were a nice touch. Hope we didn't unwittingly rip any of them away from their family by accidentally taking them home in our bags.
Shoes Off is an absolutely amazing home. It has everything you could possibly need for a perfect vacation. Not only are the views amazing, but the location on the island is great too. The owner, Steve, goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need and makes your stay important to him. All you need you do is bring your flip-flops and sunglasses! I cannot recommend this home enough!
Don't miss a kayaking trip in Bald Head Creek and adjoining tributaries.
