Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: I moved to France to get out of the rat race in London. First house was in the Cathedral town of Coutances. Having renovated that it was time for a change again so moved to “The Farm House” in Orval in 2006. It kept me very busy for the first two years. When I bought the house the kitchen was a tap and a sink in a 20 meter square room. So in went a range cooker and more storage then you could shake a stick at and a dining room table that sites 10. I added a second bathroom and additional bedroom. In my living room I turned the very inefficient open fire into an eco wood burner that heats all the radiators in the house. It runs on locally sourced sustainable wood. I took a big chunk for the garden and we now have free range chickens and vegetable patch that provide an enormous amount of our vegetables. Don’t get me wrong I am no environmental tree huger but when given the opportunity to make things better. That’s what I tend to do. It was then that I turned my attention to “The Stables “. My plan was to convert it to a place for me to stay and rent out the main house in the summer. One season latter I was back in the main house with my Girl friend and her family as well as my daughter. It was then that “The Stables” was born for people to stay in. The stables is there for full of all the stuff we all have all the time. I lived there for three mouths and a dishwasher was a must. Read the reviews they tend to hit the nail on the head or mail/ call me to ask what ever question you would like. One thing that always amuses me is when people arrive and I come to meet them I can tell by their reaction that they thought I would be older. Well at 43 I have a fair amount of water under the bridge but still need to work like a devil to keep the dream alive. Come and stay in “The Stables” and get a taste of why I came and stayed in Normandie.
Why the Owner Chose Orval, Manche, France:
I wanted to be nearer the seas and out of town. As soon as I walked in it was a case of how am I going to buy the house not if I am.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Beautiful period features of a 200 year old farm house with all the mod cons. Perfect place to stay to see the real Normandie
