About Sonya MacKinnon

We are both retired now but moved to Osoyoos in 1975 because of my husband's employment transfer. We intended to stay only 4 years but soon decided that this town is a great place to live so we built a lakeshore home where we raised our family and where we still reside.

Why Sonya MacKinnon chose Thompson Okanagan

Some time later we purchased the lakeshore lot next door and built another home supposedly for our eventual retirement. In the meantime it became a desireable vacation destination for tourists and snowbirds.

Over the years we have made additions and renovations with the plan that we would someday retire there and although we've been retired for several years this still hasn't happened and probably never will.

What makes this house unique

This area is a golfer's paradise boasting a 36 hole course 5 minutes away. There are also two 18 hole courses and two 9 hole courses 20 minutes away. Year round activities include all water sports, adventure playground, tennis, biking, hiking, horseback riding, mini golf, bowling, skiing, curling, concerts and street dances. As well, there are wine tours offered at our many vineyards and activities at the Community Centre and Seniors Centre.

Simply Perfection!!

  • 5 of 5

We have rented vacation homes for years and this has been our absolute favorite. The location and layout of the house are perfect. Within minutes of arriving, it felt like home. There were only two of us so we didn't use the upstairs, but there's plenty of room for the whole family. The whole back of the house fronts the lake and there are so many windows, each offering fantastic views. The week we visited was rainy and windy but the house was so cozy, we really didn't mind.

The house is completely stocked with most everything you'll need for your visit, except for food and wine of course. We used most of the appliances and everything worked without a glitch.

The best part of all is the value. We would have paid more for a small hotel room and been trapped during the inclement weather and gone stir crazy. The American dollar is very strong right now in Canada so if you're American, you get a great value in vacation rentals here. In all honesty, even though this house is priced roughly half of what we'd pay for something similar in California, it would be worth it!

We'd consider coming back to the Osoyoos area just to stay here!

Sonya, thank you so much for opening your beautiful home to us and providing such terrific hospitality. Kim & Dirk

Beautiful Home

  • 3 of 5

We rented the home for a family vacation following the death of our father. My family (5 of us) stayed at the lovely home and enjoyed the privacy and lovely grounds and were able to host a family reunion dinner for total of 11 people and visit during our stay however the owners live next store and are very particular about any one visiting the home beyond who has rented it even though we had less staying that advertised. They appeared to be monitoring the home, dropping over to check on garbage unannounced and dropping over to get things. Although helpful when we experienced a wasp nest down by the beach in there grass area it was a little unnerving. Although this is a beautiful home and lovely setting I was very disappointed with how the owners made us feel. Plus is location, space and beautiful deck and comfortable chairs on the deck. Negatives older Décor and outdated, Master Bedroom bed uncomfortable and owners monitoring and rules. Check these out prior to renting.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review and also for the positive comment you wrote in our guest book on departure. I'm sorry we were unable to make our property available for the two weeks you requested for next summer. Good luck finding suitable accommodation where they accept dogs.

Way better than the photos!

  • 5 of 5

This place is outstanding. It's right on the lake, at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac with a big yard and lots of parking. Everything you need is on the main floor with two large bedrooms + a full bathroom upstairs. The owners are close by and ready to help if needed. The best part of this place is the back deck and warm lake. You can slip in and out of the water from the easy-access beach and lying under the shade of the trees is the perfect way to cool down. The back yard is completely private and the views are stunning. The pictures don't do justice to how great this house + yard are. Getting to town is easy and everything is close by. Love this place :)

A lovely vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

We had the great pleasure of staying in this lovely lakefront home in early April of 2016. We definitely made the right choice. The home is situated just a few yards away from the lake edge and the outside space was perfect for enjoying coffee on the deck in the morning as well as meals and quiet evenings. Even though the house has two floors, everything we needed was located on the first floor which was very convenient. We felt very comfortable and at home. The homeowners, Sonja and Pete, were wonderful hosts and were available to answer any questions we had. We hope to return to this wonderful spot in future years.

Our getaway in osoyoos

  • 5 of 5

For five or six years we have been coming spring and fall to this lovely part of Canada! The home we are lucky to rent is right on the lake with beautiful views of the mountains and vineyards across the water. Although it's two stories, everything we need is on the main floor but when family join us they stay upstairs where there are two spacious bedrooms and a bathroom. There's a big deck across the back looking over the lake. Our grandchildren love swimming in the shallow sandy beach right out front and have been able to swim as late as thanksgiving and early as May first. The house is well equipped with everything you'd need and well located in wine country. There's a wood fireplace for chilly evenings, Internet connection and tvs. The owners live next door and are very helpful and well informed about the area. It's almost like coming home.

Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at this wonderful home was the result of a search for a spot where 6 adults and 3 young children could meet: the locale and set-up was perfect. The New Zealand contingent had the downstairs bedroom, bathrooms and den and the comfortably air-conditioned upstairs housed the grandparents and the 3 person Calgary group. This arrangement provided ample privacy, and wonderful gathering spaces downstairs in the living room and the adjacent outside patio with delightful lake view. The little beach and shallow lake was perfect for our grandkids. The grass provided a safe and ample play area, too. Deck chairs were plentiful and comfortable. In fact we had everything we needed at this property: ample towels, kitchen utensils etc. Osoyoos provides many sight-seeing opportunities and a variety of swim locales -- we found the peaceful surroundings at the house to be perfectly suited for our little family reunion!
