The Salty Cabin is on a wooded hill in a very private setting at the bottom of the hill is waterfront access to Long Cove, perfect for launching a canoe or kayak.
This spot has direct access to Long Cove, which is a great spot to put your kayak in the water. From there, you have many options for a short or long paddle being right on the edge of Muscle Ridge Channel and Penobscot Bay.
The Salty Cabin is clean and comfortable, and about a 3 min walk to the water. The galley kitchen is truly unique, with etched glass cabinet doors and a large slate sink. There are 2 bedrooms, (1 upstairs and 1 downstairs) both have comfortable beds. The loft with a futon can also be used as sleeping space. There is a DVD player, but no cable or internet. We did not miss the TV, and a short car ride to the Jackson Memorial Library or coffee shop suited our internet access needs.
We really enjoyed our stay here, and the area has lots to offer in July. We would like to return again to the Salty Cabin next time.
I want to add to my former comments that the owners of the "Salty Cabin" provide a spiral notebook filled with information of things to see and do in the area -- maps, restaurant menus, information about the cabin, etc. This notebook was vastly helpful. Also, another very great provision were the two removable gates provided for the top and bottom of the spiral staircase in order to protect children and pets. Lastly, here are a few area attractions to see and do:
Marshall Point Lighthouse (incl. gift store and small museum), picnicing
Owls Head Lighthouse, picnicing
Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse and mile long jetty
Maine Lighthouse Museum, Rockland
American Lighthouse Foundation Gift Store, Rockland
Puffin Project, Rockland
General Henry Knox Museum/Mansion (Revolutionary War hero), Thomaston
Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland
Maine Maritime Museum, Bath
BIW Shipyard tours, Bath
ferry to Monhegan Island (10 miles out at sea), inclu. lighthouse & museum, art galleries, hiking, etc.
Camden Hills State Park (hiking, picnicing, gorgeous scenery, boat rides)
chartered sail boat rides in Camden (Appledore) and Boothbay Harbor (EastWind)
Rockland is the largest nearby town to the Salty Cabin, and has a wealth of eating places and stores, gift shops. Camden and Boothbay Harbor are "must see", quaint New England seaside towns.
All the above and more are well in driving distance of the "Salty Cabin".
My husband and I spent one week (9/10-17/2011) in the "Salty Cabin", and were extremely pleased with our lodging. We happened to be very exhausted after 1 1/2 years of taking care of a dying parent, etc., so we appreciated the very private, peaceful, relaxing setting in the woods. The cabin is cedar clapboard on the outside and beautiful knotty pine on the inside walls, w/pine floors and a large stone fireplace that we so enjoyed. There were many, many beautiful touches to the cabin, including a neat little window nook filled with bookshelves and a place to sleep. The book selection was varied and ample; we especially enjoyed many fine selections about the Maine coast, lighthouses, sailboats, travel, etc.. Many board games are in the cabin, as well as generous paper and other supplies. We brought our own wax logs for the fireplace to minimize having to deal with real wood, but there was some wood outside. There is also a large propane monitor for additional heat, which we used and appreciated -- also much easier than dealing with the wood stove. There are two full bedrooms (w/one double bed in each), as well as 2 futon couches and also the window nook space (which is pictured to the right of the dining room table). There is a full living room downstairs, as well as a full one in the loft, and two baths -- one with a clawfoot tub and one with a shower. Very cozy and comfortable and spacious cabin (good in case of rain, but we had great weather). The propane tank for the gas grill was empty. There is a DVD/video machine, but the connected T.V. is very small and also not connected to cable. Since we had brought our own computer speakers and a laptop computer, we used that setup to play DVD's. If you want them, be sure to bring your own DVD's as the video library is depleted. Water rights to a beautiful inlet of the ocean are a very short walk down the hill and, unexpectedly, a great tandem kayak was provided, which we launched and so enjoyed. Since we do not personally own a kayak or car racks to transport a rented one, we very much appreciated having this kayak available & right next to the water. A lobsterman also lives at this spot and sells lobsters to cook, which we did. Nearby attractions are abundant, and are esp. appealing to nature lovers, kayakers and hikers, lighthouse lovers, boaters, history and art lovers (i.e. museums), etc. Many fine restaurants and interesting shops are in the area at large, as well as chartered boat trips. Great, fun area.
This is a very nice little cabin with real character. Beds were comfortable, the pictures posted perfectly represent the cabin, and the kitchen was well equipped. We had a couple of issues that could easily be fixed and would improve the cabin greatly: Cleaning could be a bit better, deck chairs would have been nice, seeing that the grill is full of gas for renters would be nice, connecting the TV so it can actually be used would also be nice. Better lighting over the kitchen/dining table is essential.
Very private location. Peaceful and pleasant.
