Overview

About the property

Cabin, 6 bedrooms + Den, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 17)

My property is called Elk Valley because it is located on a secluded ridge 100 yards from the Black Hills National Forest. I have a small valley or meadow where Elk, Deer and Wild Turkey live. The Elk come in from the National Forest and water at my pond about 75 yards behind my large 4000 sq ft 'cabin.' A private service road connects the house and land to Elk Valley Road, which is right off of SD Hwy 89 or 'Sylvan Lake Road' a historic Hwy that continues up to Sylvan Lake Lodge, Crazy Horse Monument and Mount Rushmore.

Mount Rushmore is 20 minutes from Elk Valley, Crazy Horse monument is only 5 minutes away. Elk Valley is a magnificent place, secluded yet minutes away from Custer and easy to locate. Mornings are especially beautiful at this unique place which has a spiritual quality.

About Tim Wilka

I am 62 years old, semi-retired, two adult children. I graduated from O'Gorman HS in 1973, Univ. of Notre Dame in 1977, and USD School of Law in 1983; I love spending time in Custer, South Dakota at Elk Valley, it has a spiritual aspect to it that can only be experienced by going there.

Tim Wilka purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Tim Wilka chose Custer

It was built to be my retirement home where I can keep my horses. Custer County is the most beautiful county in the Black Hills--and that means maybe in South Dakota. It is a tourist town of 2,000 people that services the entire USA and still remaims small and where you want to move to and either retire or raise a family. Custer has 12 churches.

What makes this cabin unique

It is near everything in the Black Hills; It is comfy, restful, and the land is as beautiful as it gets; I have an exercise room, a steam shower, foosball, pingpong, outdoor activities, just about anything you want to do-like camping or making a bonfire in the back yard.

This property is ABSOLUTELY beautiful and spacious!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property from the moment we stepped foot in the house. It is absolutely beautiful and spacious and has enough room so that you are not stepping all over each other (we had 10 of us in our party and still had an abundance of room). The house is well supplied with bedding/towels. The kitchen was above and beyond any rental we have stayed in and had enough room that 4 people could be preparing meals at any one time. Just a short drive to Custer to shop/eat without being inconvenient. Being able to sit on the deck and watching the wildlife is so relaxing, not to mention how quiet it is plus the beautiful scenery. Tim is FANTASTIC to work with....would definitely stay at this property again and again!!! Thank you so much, Tim!! I can't say enough wonderful things about this property.

July 2018

Our family had a very nice time staying here. There was lots of room for the 10 of us and the location was very nice. It was close to everything and very quiet.. It could use a little updating such as the TV's but overall everything was nice.

Great get away!

  • 5 of 5

You want to get away from it all? This is the place. I live in the mountains of Colorado and it is beautiful so how do you get away from a place like that? Go here! First of all the house is wonderful and spacious with more than enough room to stretch out, either in the house, on the deck or the massive space right in the back yard. The eastern side of the property abuts Forest Service land so you can explore. I took my dog for a walk every morning and we saw antelope, deer, and wild turkey everyday. It is so quiet you can hear everything going on around you and it isn't road traffic it's nature.

The location is perfect as it is just a couple minutes away from Custer where you can get groceries or there are many restaurants to go to if that's your thing. Location is also perfect for sight seeing as well. We went to Mt. Rushmore and then through Custer State Park in one day and it was just one big beautiful circle.

The biggest thing was the hospitality though. I never had to ask Tim for anything while we were there but I have a pretty good idea if there was something wrong Tim and his staff would have been on it immediately.

I personally have been to the Black Hills 3 times now, (I like to check up on Crazy horse every 10 years or so just to see the progress). This is our place from now on. We had guests from three different states meet us there and every one was very happy. You know how hard it is to keep EVERYONE happy?

Do yourself a favor and stay here so you can get away from your hustle and bustle.

Beautiful scenery surrounding a lovely spacious home.

  • 4 of 5

Our family enjoyed our 4 night stay in Tim’s home. The atmosphere was relaxing and even though we had neighbors we couldn’t see their homes from ours. We enjoyed deer and turkey early in the mornings. It was nice being only a mile or so from town! Thank you for allowing us to stay at your home!

Beautiful!!!!

  • 5 of 5

The property more than accommodated the needs of our surprise family reunion to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday! This location was ideal to visit all the places my mother had been dreaming of going; Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, even Devils Tower WY was within a reasonable driving distance as was the geographical center of the united states! (once Hawaii and Alaska were added) Thank you Mr. W. for sharing your beautiful property with us! The surprise was a huge success! (Mom cried she was so happy!)

Excellent location and comfortable cabin

  • 4 of 5

Nice cabin that's very well located for tourist activities but far enough off the beaten path to be peaceful and private. Tim, the owner was very responsive and helpful as I made our travel plans. The cabin met our needs very well. We were concerned at first about the lack of AC but it cooled off nicely after the windows had been open a while.
