About the Property

5 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms,, sleeps 13

Between Breton and Wreck Cove they say there’s buried treasure. Use your Breton Cove hideaway as a jumping off point for your own great treasure hunt and vacation.

The Farmhouse is family and pet friendly and can accommodate up to 13 people. It comes with 5 bedrooms, a spacious living room with extended Douglas fir beams and cozy wood stove, a full kitchen and dining room (electric stove, microwave, refrigerator, dishware and utensils) and two full baths. There is also a deck off one of the downstairs bedrooms with an outdoor fire pit near by. Trails leading from the farmhouse through a meadow and old growth forest to a look-off over the ocean. Overall the farmhouse is a great jump-off point to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Cabot Trail.

While you are a short drive from its sister property Cabot Shores, visit us to rent a kayak, canoe or stand up paddle board, to go swimming and explore more trails. Have an evening of entertainment and great food at our GoBistro, a drink at the bar, or just soak in the scenery. You are always welcome.

The Breton Cove Farmhouse is on the Cabot Trail. You'll find us on the right side of the road as you head north towards Ingonish, 23km north of the Englishtown ferry, on the Atlantic coast of Cape Breton. Opposite us is the Gaelic Singers Hall and Community center, with a ballfield, dugouts and a field suitable for soccer, frisbee, baseball...

You can explore mountain trails, beautiful fields, and a gentle sloping forest leading down to a small pond and also to a beach on the Atlantic. You can walk south from beach to beach, finding sandy and rocky beaches and the famous Black Rock (Skir Dhu in Gaelic), where one time fishing boats were tied.

Other Activities: snowshoeing, native crafts, basketball, soccer

Manager info

Year Purchased: 2001

About: At Cabot Shores, your hosts are Dr. Paul and Barbara Weinberg, Cosmo the guide dog and friendly staff. Barbara is an accomplished acupuncturist, vegetarian chef and gardener. Dr. Paul is a former 'road warrior', teacher and psychologist, who considers his doctorate to now be in 'adventure travel'. Paul can be found jamming on the blues harmonica and trombone, hiking, yoloboarding (stand up paddling) or kayaking with Barbara and Cosmo.

Why Victoria, Subd. A, NS, Canada:
When we found the farmhouse, it was the 60 acres along the Atlantic and 120 acres in the Cape Breton Highlands that first drew us in. We were told to bury or burn it and rebuild, but we chose another alternative: to renovate with local spruce, hemlock and imported Douglas fir beams, and preserve the history and beauty of this beautiful, spacious Cape Breton home. In 2000, we renovated the 19th century homestead/working farm which once had horses, chickens, pigs, sprawling gardens and a sawmill. Dr. Paul and Barbara walked the land, re-creating trails once used by the Urquehardt family, who built and lived in this house. The farmhouse had been a place where midwives delivered babies and it was a home to many adopted children. Since then, it has become a gathering spot for travelers, families and friends who enjoy spending time with each other hiking, swimming, boating, and listening to local Celtic music and ceilidhs.

The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
The Breton Cove Farmhouse is located on the Cabot Trail, near the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and many artisans, shops and places of interest. However, you may never have to leave the comfort and beauty awaiting you. With trails following through a meadow of blueberries and wild flowers, into an old growth forest, past a pond and to the ocean look off, there is plenty to explore on site. The farmhouse is both extremely private and conveniently located for further adventuring, and a great place to spend quality time with loved ones.
