Mountain View

  • 5 of 5

I was more than pleased with the casa on the mountain. Beautiful views and the sound of the river flowing below was very comforting. The casa was very clean, well decorated and stocked with every possible thing I needed. Laura was more than just a wonderful cook. She was fantastic at guiding us to different places (tour guide) also. I would highly recommend this place and I will return again. If you are looking for a genuine Mexico experience, this place won't let you down.

Navidad 2017

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Marfil December 28- January 4. This trip was to celebrate 20 years of visits to Puerto Vallarta with our children. We were a group of 6 adults and 2 children. The space fit our needs and more. There was space for privacy and space for gathering together. The house keeer Laura was so kind and helpful. For a small price Laura prepared two breakfasts for us that provided leftovers for other breakfasts. The granddaughters loved the chilequiles. Laura also baby sat one night so we could have an adult dinner out. She helped us get a taxi on the phone etc.

The house was clean and nicely decorated in a charming Mexican fashion. There are about 50 stair steps from front door to main kitchen level. I did not count the steps on the spiral stair case to the roof. The spiral staircase is not to do after too much tequila. This was significant to me as I am recovering from a knee surgery. I managed and considered the stairs PT. This could be an issue for some people.

Cherryl Haverhals was very helpful ahead of trip helping to arrange airport transfers as well as two lovely meals prepared by a private chef. Cherryl also made an emergency doctor appointment for us when we thought my husband had a detached retina.

If you are familiar with Puerto Vallarta you can get to Casa Marfil with an airport taxi or Uber for less expense. For our purposes with small children the pickup was worth the extra expense. I will say the same about the chef cost as there are many good restaurants nearby. However for convenience with our group it was worthwhile. Chef Jonatan and his mother Chelly were delightful as well as good cooks. I was disappointed that they did not clean up after the meals.

A favorite new place for us is an open air restaurant a the bottom of the stair bridge on the Rio Cuale. It is named Babel for the sound of the river. The food was

good, inexpense, and the service was great. You can sit with a coffee or other adult beverage and watch the iguanas and birds on the river. It is an oasis in the heart of the city. It also has a park with hammocks that the granddaughters loved.

After our family left we (grandparents ) moved to a hotel near the malecon. I was actually home sick for Casa Marfil. I do hope to return someday.

If you want an authentic Mexican experience I cannot say enough about this place.

Absolutely charming home.

  • 5 of 5

Casa Marfil, we miss you already! What a lovely home - we couldn’t have enjoyed our stay more and can’t wait to stay there again. The bedrooms, living spaces, and outdoor spaces are just lovely and as described with beautifully detailed wood and tile work. Gorgeous!! It’s in a great location- easy to walk to many great places (including the beach!) which we loved. Laura, the housekeeper was incredibly kind and warm. She kept everything so clean and tidy. Sherryl, the owner, was super responsive if there were any questions or anything we needed. Everyone was just wonderful! Thank you for helping to make our holiday in Vallerta one that we will never forget. See you again soon.

Beautiful Home

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful home in central Vallarta. Walking distance to the beach. Lots of privacy within the home perfect for couples trip, family vacations, or large groups. The cons to the home LOTS of stairs and parking, we rented a vehicle and parking was very difficult due to the roads being extremely narrow but other than that the house was perfect for our vacation.

Owner's Response: Thank you for choosing Casa Marfil and for your response for review. When we receive an inquiry, one of the first things we describe about Casa Marfil is that there are four bedrooms; the first two are on the first floor, the second two are on the second floor, kitchen and dining room are on the 3rd floor and the roof top garden area is on the roof, or on the 4th floor. The house is built much like a Amsterdam town house, tall and skinny, central Puerto Vallarta, minutes walk to the beaches, Malecón and restaurants. For that reason, our potential guests know if there is a health issue or comfort issue, they know beforehand, there are a LOT of stairs. Older folks and people with knee issues can make the best decisions for themselves with that information. As far as parking, many of our guests do not rent cars as we are so centrally located; those driving in from different parts of Mexico, however, will find parking an issue as we are located on a winding, cobblestone lane that should be one way traffic direction, but isn't and that makes for lots of residential parking up and down the street and difficult to drive through to the house. Again, thank you for choosing Casa Marfil and we hope that you come back soon to visit. Casa Marfil Management

Plenty of space and excellent follow up by owner/mgmnt

  • 5 of 5

We arrived with 5 adults and had plenty of space whether you needed private time with your iPad/work laptop/cocktail or if you wanted to congregate and make plans for the day or evening in PV. Sherryl was needed on a couple of occasions for separate reasons (none of them negative reasons) and was very responsive to our needs. I polled by fellow travelers and here is what they said:

"It was a fabulous house with tons of room to enjoy your friends or to escape them when needed! :)"

"Loved Laura...loved the accommodations and location. Wifi signal a little too weak in the downstairs bedrooms but overall two thumbs up!"

We were there for New Year's and had an excellent view of the fireworks and lanterns release. It was truly amazing and we would recommend this property with a hearty 5 star rating.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for choosing Casa Marfil, we enjoyed having your group as our guests and would welcome you back at any time in the future. Laura will also love to hear that you enjoyed her when you were with us over the holidays. I've called our wifi specialist to remedy the issue with the downstairs wifi signal and this will be resolved right away! It's important to us that our guests feel welcome to let us know how to improve their stay and we enjoy great ideas our guests have to offer and implementing them to create a wonderful stay. Happy New Year and please come back when you visit Puerto Vallarta again in the future! Our goal is to create a space where people can feel that it is their home away from home and return regularly as good friends and family will do.

Beautiful Property

  • 2 of 5

This house was really gorgeous and a great size. It was a little exhausting with so many stairs, but those under 60 should have no problem. If you have a car, the roads are challenging to maneuver, but we managed even with a van. My rating is low because the owner was very difficult. I felt constantly accused by her, which took away from a relaxing vacation. She charged me for things that I did not break, accusing my grandchildren of breaking her air mattresses when they were asleep when the mattresses originally were inflated and we ended up on the floor in the middle of the night. Yes, they did bounce on them the next day when Laura inflated them again, but they were already broken. I was charged $200 for 2 mattresses so I hope no one else has to pay for them as well.

Puerto Vallarta is lovely and again, this house was really beautiful.

Owner's Response: This guest was initially canceled due to non-payment after several times trying to reach her to conclude the transaction. This guest asked for a reservation for 12 people; 15 people showed up. This guest told me she needed an extra night for her son and his family and asked if she could pay cash upon arrival. I do not like to do this as it is always a bad problem. I allowed it with great trepidation. This guest then told me her son would not need the extra night as his flight was canceled. This guest did not control the children and allowed them to jump on the air mattresses and broke them. This guest, when I asked why the air mattresses were being used since half of her group didn't show up due to flight cancellation, then admitted that they did arrive. This guest did not honor the 12 maximum people allowed in Casa Marfil and then tried to deceive how many people were there. This guest would not pay for the extra night until I sent the contract reminding her that she was paid up and until the last night of the contract and I informed her that if she didn't pay for the extra night, I would assume she didn't need the extra night. This guest had so many issues from the beginning that I should have known better than to allow her to re-book after I canceled her reservation for non-payment, but it is indeed difficult to know how to navigate the political field of dealing with difficult guests. They can cause enormous problems, if I didn't re-book her she could have complained about that. If I re-booked her, she could have made trouble at the house. And indeed, my employee who keeps the house clean was so over whelmed with the amount of people in the house and the daily chaos and complete messiness maintained by all of the people and children with clothes and toys everywhere, that my employee ended up at the doctor from stress of dealing with this guest and the enmity and confusion she created between the three of us. I had the warning signs from the begining, but I always try to give the benefit of the doubt and be very clear from the outset about rules of the house and the amount of people the house can comfortably sleep.

About Lupita Hernandez, Manager

This charming Mexican villa built in typical Vallarta style offers dramatic stone and brick archways. Casa Marfil is a beautiful 4,300 sq ft, 4 story villa nestled on the hillside with spectacular views of the Bay of Banderas. Conveniently located in Gringo Gulch within walking distance to all the fine restaurants, shopping, open air markets, beach and popular nightlife. Relax on the terrace sipping margaritas while enjoying the many spectacular sunsets or the nightly fireworks display.

The views of the Rio Cuale allow for great wildlife viewing of large yellow and black striped iguana, egret fishing, and wild parrot flying above the river. At times you can catch views of the otters playing in the river and each night frog’s song and cricket are the sounds of the night. The open air concept on the 3rd floor kitchen and salon make for wonderful bay breezes to flow through the villa. This villa is very charming and dramatic. All the beds are new and very comfortable. There is maid service three times a week. A chef or cook is available upon request.

We came to Puerto Vallarta in 2005 and were enchanted by the laid back and relaxed atmosphere. Great communities and people, easy to relocate and feel comfortable. We currently split our time between the U.K. and Puerto Vallarta.
