Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 1 Bath, (Maximum 5 adults or family of 6)
This is a classic two story cabin that has been remodeled. The upstairs is the sleeping area with two small open bedrooms, a lofted sleeping area suitable for children and sitting area with fireplace. The downstairs includes a bathroom, kitchen and sitting area and opens onto a full deck with outstanding lake views and privacy. The property sits on the south end of Lake Papakeechie and backs up to the Tri-County game Preserve. This is the hilly end of the lake with heavily wooded lots that create a real sense of solitude. Wifi was installed in 2014.
Lake Papakeechie is a private lake that was created about 100 years ago by combining several smaller lakes. The lake is controlled by an owners' association and there is no public access to the lake. Motors of any kind are prohibited. This ensures a peaceful environment with excellent fishing and safe swimming. The lake is fed by artesian wells and water from the adjacent wetlands of the game preserve. The water is tested annually by the association and is consistently found to be extremely clean.
One is surrounded by nature here. The lake is home to diverse waterfoul and wildlife including swans, geese, ducks, great blue herons, beaver and a bald eagle. Hiking or hunting in the preserve is literally across the road. It feels secluded, yet the Lake Wawasee public boat launch is 5 minutes away.
The cabin is located at the bottom of a steep driveway and there are stone steps to the cabin and lakefront. This may be a consideration for those with mobility issues.

About Pam and Dan Leffers
We are from Fort Wayne, Indiana. I am a contractor and my wife is retired after a career in non-profit. We enjoy outdoor activities, travel and family get-togethers. We have two sons who are married and two grandchildren.
Pam and Dan Leffers purchased this Cabin in 2008
Why Pam and Dan Leffers chose Turkey Creek Township
Our family has owned property on Papakeechie for over 40 years. We love the lake and the area. Our family cottage is next door to this cabin and we purchased the cabin to provide extra space when needed and to protect our investment.
What makes this Cabin unique
This lake is a vacation for the body and the mind. There is no hustle and bustle here, no jet skis roaring by and no waves crashing to shore. The loudest noise we hear are geese flying by or the sound of paddle boats in the water.

Very clean and well-stocked cabin. The private lake was so serene, and we enjoyed the flamingoes, ducks, geese, woodpeckers, jumping (big) fish, and a pair of beavers! One small glitch was taken care of rapidly. The owners were very responsive and so kind. Would have loved to stay longer!
Glad you enjoyed your weekend with friends. We wanted to thank you for your patience with the heater issue. The one disadvantage of a "rustic" cabin is that we don't have things like central heat and air conditioning.
We did have to chuckle at the image of flamingos on the lake! I'm guessing it was the beautiful swans, unless a crazy flamingo decided to fly north from Florida.
Hope to see you back again.

Great getaway at a vintage cabin
What a beautiful, historic cabin! It is quaint, well-kept and ideal for a quiet getaway
Beautiful, quiet place to relax!
Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the little red cabin! The sunrises over the lake were spectacular. The hosts were very accommodating and helped us with any issue that came up. What a beautiful and peaceful place to relax!
Owners very kind and considerate. Organized well equipped and clean cottage. We hope to return.
There are many steps to this spirited cottage with the most amazing peaceful view of quiet wooded lake. We are challenged to scale down on the “stuff” we bring to make an easier packing in and out. We found most everything we needed already there. Thank you Dan and Pam for your hospitality.
So glad you had most of the things you needed at the cottage. The stairs can be daunting but I also think the view is worth it. It’s a great place to be in the Fall so hope the weather cooperated.
Always Love Staying Here!
This was our third trip to the Red Cottage, and it's just as enjoyable as it was the first time.
Can't wait to do it all over again
Our 4th time to stay at Red Cottage. Hope to go back next year
Just to restate what has already been said in previous reviews and add some of our own observations:
very steep terrain, eclectic added on architecture and interior room arrangement, all bedrooms on 2nd floor - bathroom on 1st floor, wonderful large exterior decks with great view, well appointed kitchen with view to lake, depending on the month and weather – pan fishing is somewhere between very good and excellent, hiking trails in the nature preserve just across the street, private and quiet, very nice and accommodating owners.
We love it when a family makes Lake Papakeechie a family tradition. We'll look forward to seeing you next year.

Lake Papakeechie is a private lake that does not permit motors of any kind. Rowboats, canoes, kayak, paddleboats and sailboats are welcome. This ensures a peaceful environment with excellent fishing and safe swimming. The public boat ramp for Lake Wawasee is one mile away for skiing and boating. The Tri-County Game Preserve with excellent hiking and hunting backs up to this property.
