About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-12)

Located in the private community of Benway Landing on the Chain, our lakefront French country cottage was designed by national award winning home designer, Robert Martignoni of Building Science Associates.

Nestled in the woods on a private road, the house is built on a slope and offers views of the lake from the large great room, the master bedroom, the screened porch and the sprawling deck. The floor to ceiling windows in the great room provide plenty of light and add to the spacious feel. The stone (wood burning) fireplace is the focal point in the great room and not only warms the room but provides a romantic ambience on those cold winter nights.

The home features natural pine floors throughout with tile in bathrooms and carpet in upstairs loft. The gourmet kitchen has Jenn-Air appliances, including a gas stove with convection oven and French door style refrigerator with ice maker. The painted custom cabinets contrast the beautiful granite counter tops. There is plenty of storage and all kitchen essentials are provided including a Cuisinart blender, Kitchen Aid mixer, dishes, glasses, serving trays and cookware. The eating area seats six, with an adjoining enclosed screened porch that seats six to eight more guests.

The great room has just been updated with a 50" flat Plasma (HD) TV (DirecTV satellite service), a Blue Ray DVD player and a new stereo receiver with surround sound.

The master bedroom has a queen size iron bed and a closet with drawers and hanging space. The adjoining master bathroom includes a granite vanity, Jacuzzi corner tub, stall shower and linen closet.

The guest bedroom has a full size bed and is right around the corner from the main bathroom which has a granite vanity and stall shower.

The loft upstairs has a sofa bed which pulls out to a queen size bed. We've added a 4" memory foam topper to the mattress for extra comfort. There is a wonderful view of the lake from the loft.

The expansive outdoor deck is approximately 10' x 30'. Enjoy the quiet and serene setting gazing at the lake and surrounding wooded areas. There is a gas grill, Adirondack chairs, and a large table with umbrella which seats six to eight. Guests thoroughly enjoy drinking their morning coffee as the sun comes up on this wonderful deck.

The (unfinished) basement provides additional beds (great for kids) and game area. There are two full size beds, one twin bed and a roll-a-way bed in the basement along with a pool table and foosball table. The new walk out patio provides additional outdoor seating at ground level with easy access to the boardwalk leading to the lake. The fire pit area is conveniently located close to the walk out patio and there is an additional seating area down by the lake.

Attention wildlife enthusiasts! The cottage is located on Benway Lake, which is among the 'Upper Chain of Lakes'. The lakes are perfect for kayaking and canoeing. Paddle through all six lakes on one trip or break this fabulous landscape into day trips. Either way, you are in for a unique kayaking or canoeing experience. We have two one-person kayaks and a canoe for your use, as well as life jackets. Enjoy wildlife such as loons, swans, ducks and turtles. Fish for bass, pike, walleye, and even trout and muskie! We also have a row boat available so if you'd like to bring your own boat motor you can easily attach it.

Please note: There is not a sandy beach at this property, but both Lake Michigan and Torch Lake beaches are just ten minutes away.

The best northern Michigan golf courses are all a short drive away: Bay Harbor, Shanty Creek, The Chief, Hawks Eye, Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, A-Ga-Ming, Antrim Dells and Dunmaglas. The cottage is a great base location for golfer's who enjoy playing a different course each day. Excellent local restaurants include The Blue Pelican in Central Lake, Shorts Brewery in Bellaire and The Rowe in Ellsworth. Classic Pizza in downtown Central Lake has pizza and subs. And, believe it or not, the Central Lake BP gas station on M-88 also has great pizza (order fresh!), smoked chicken and smoked ribs! The local grocery store in Central Lake has most everything you will need to cook at home and if not, the large Family Fare market in Bellaire is a short drive away.

About Margaret Devall

We built our cottage in 2005 as a family retreat and future retirement home. Since our careers moved us out of state, we are unable to visit as often and decided to share it with others. We hope you love it as much as we do!

Margaret Devall purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Margaret Devall chose Central Lake

After spending many years visiting friends 'up north', we too began to fall in love with the areas natural beauty. We never thought we would find property that was on a lake (my requirement) AND had acreage (Tom's requirement). We purchased ten acres on Benway Lake in 2002 and began to build in 2003. We recently purchased the lot next door adding an additional three acres and lake frontage totaling 220'. We love the location as we feel the west side of Michigan is the most beautiful with its rolling hills, country roads, cherry and apple orchards, wineries and road side markets. We love the location and we love the house! We only wish we lived closer so we could enjoy it more. Our loss is your gain!

What makes this cottage unique

Golf in the summer and ski in the winter! What a great location near the best golf courses and ski slopes. Agaming and Shanty Creek are just 30 minutes away; Boyne Highlands, Boyne Mountain and Bay Harbor are just 40 minutes away. Stay home and walk the woods and country roads, sit on the deck with morning coffee, cook to your hearts desire in the wonderful kitchen. You may never want to leave the relaxation of the cottage. If you do venture out, don't miss going up to the picturesque town of Charlevoix on beautiful Lake Michigan, a lovely twenty minute drive northwest. Enjoy great shopping and food including American Spoon, fudge (of course), and ice cream! Another twenty minutes from Charlevoix is beautiful Petoskey, with Harbor Springs just a bit further up along Lake Michigan into Little Traverse Bay. Heading south on M-88 from Central Lake, Bellaire is just twenty minutes. You will find the famous Short's Brewery, recently expanded, a nice coffee shop and an ice cream parlor. Back in Central Lake, pick up a great pizza at the BP gas station or enjoy a nice dinner at the Blue Pelican. Want to go to the beach? A short drive due west (ten minutes) takes you to Torch Lake and Grand Traverse Bay beyond (Barnes Park), where you can lay on the public beach for hours (remember, we do not have a sandy beach at our property). Do you have a special occasion in which a fine dining experience is worthy? Drive no further than Ellsworth (ten minutes) to The Rowe Inn and enjoy their unique menu (reservations suggested). There are plenty of places to go and things to do. Don't forget Sleeping Bear Dunes and Mackinac Island are both day trips from our cottage!

We loved our week here!

  • 5 of 5

This home had everything you could ask for inside and out! We had never been to Michigan before and our favorite part of the trip was spending time right in the back yard and on the lake. Having the use of the kayaks, canoe, and fishing boat allowed all of us (family of 4) to enjoy exploring the lake together. You can't swim off the dock but can kayak across to a little sandy area (it's a very short distance). The town was quaint and has what you need. We also enjoyed a day trip to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes and thought that was beautiful. All that sand makes for some tough hiking, but it sure is pretty! We spent a day at Mackinac Island and recommend renting the bikes if you go. Traverse City is about 45 min away and was a neat town too. You can swim in Lake Michigan there, paddleboard, hike or just enjoy the shops. Margaret was easy to work with and was quick with answering questions. We would definitely recommend this place!

Beautiful & serene!

  • 5 of 5

The wife and I celebrated five years of holy matrimony at this beautiful lake house! The location is ideal with regard to being in the vicinity of food and drink, while still staying secluded. We loved our stay here; the scenery is hard to beat, and the property itself is high end and gorgeous!

Beautiful home just as photos show

  • 5 of 5

The Devall cottage is a beautiful home in a beautiful setting. The photos are a great representation of the house and we loved the decorations, the setting, the conveniences, and the overall layout...The patio and sun-room were our favorite. Upon going down to the lake upon our arrival, we noticed some poison ivy growing onto the walkway but a quick call to Margaret on Saturday night and it was taken care of first thing Sunday morning.

We brought our 17' four winns on this trip and found that we were not able to access any lake south of Benway as it was too shallow so we played a bit on Benway and Wilson but also pulled the boat out of the water on 2 days to enjoy nearby Lake Charlevoix and Walloon.

Overall, it was a great trip and Margaret was a great host.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the kind words! The boat access situation is very useful for upcoming guests so I appreciate you including this information. I'm glad to hear you explored nearby Lake Charlevoix and Walloon Lake as both are gorgeous areas! Perhaps next time you could drop your boat in the picturesque Torch Lake, just ten or so minutes west. Thanks again and we hope you return soon!

Everything you need and more in a peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

We just returned after staying 7 days at this great cottage. Great location for exploring the Mission Peninsula wineries (which we did twice!), Sleepy Bear Dunes, Traverse City and Petoskey. Mackinaw City where you catch the ferry to Mackinaw Island is just under two hours! The house is outfitted with everything you needed and then some. I am a former personal chef (yes my knives travel with me) and I always find one or two missing items in most kitchens.. not the case here! The beds are super comfortable, as are the pillows! I had two work for a couple of days and was afraid that the internet connection wasn't going to allow me to join video meetings, not an issue. Had a great connection to my meetings via GoToMeeting. Can't beat taking business meetings from the beauty of the back deck looking on to the lake. I can go on and on... and the pictures certainly don't do it justice! Last but not least, the owners are super responsive and took great care of us. Even when we managed to lock one of the bathroom doors from the outside. They were prompt to have someone there to sort it out.

Great Location - Beautiful, Quiet Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family, two of us, plus four of our teenagers and a couple of their friends had a wonderful week in this quiet, modern, well-designed, well-appointed home. Plenty of seating (inside and out), plenty of beds, cooking utensils, games, kayaks, sunlight, trees campfires and water allowed us to enjoy everything we love about Michigan in the summer. Easy drives to Charlevoix, Petosky, and Elk Rapids. Lake Michigan, Torch Lake, M88 and charming local towns of Central Lake & Bellaire, were all close to the house. Plus, boating all up and down the Channel Lakes from the dock! The Devalls created a wonderful space to act as a basecamp for all our northern adventures and then easily relax when we were done.
