About Karen Armel

Our family rented a variety of homes in the mountains of western NC over the years. We loved staying in vacation rentals, so when we found Pine Shadows Chalet and fell in love with it in 2003, we took the plunge into second home ownership. After a year we decided to share our wonderful vacation home with other families. It has worked out fabulously, and the people who have stayed have been top-notch!

For twenty years, I was professor of fine arts and humanities at Florida State College in Jacksonville, FL. My spouse is a retired journalist of The Associated Press and has recently published his first novel. So the chalet has a full library of books and music and is decorated with an artist's touch. Come enjoy our wonderful place.

Karen Armel purchased this chalet in 2003

Why Karen Armel chose Blue Ridge Mountains

We keep our beautiful home well-maintained, updated, and guest-friendly. Your great experience visiting Pine Shadows Chalet is our top concern. Our guests -- some of whom return year after year -- say it best in their reviews. Please view them.

What makes this chalet unique

We instantly loved Pine Shadows Chalet because of its surrounding pastoral beauty. We liked that the home was at the top of a private road and off the beaten track yet in close proximity to the attractions and shopping in Hendersonville and Asheville. The house was custom-built in 1981 with a 25' apex in the living room at the top of the 5000-brick fireplace. We loved the many angles of the walls and roof lines, the interior brick walls, the natural oak doors, and the many upgrades too numerous to list. We were instantly drawn to the gorgeous westerly view from the living room-dining room, all the natural light, and the 'good karma' of the chalet. The owner/builders lived at Pine Shadows Chalet from 1981 - 2003. We are the home's lucky second owners.

Spectacular location!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, private home, close to Columbus (1.4 miles), yet far enough away to feel like you are "getting away from it all".

Sitting on the deck was our favorite - drinking coffee, eating dinner. Gorgeous.

Our one recommendation for this place is to remove some of the furniture - not the couches, but there are oodles of chairs, many book cases, other shelving units etc. There is a lot of stuff in this house....but it didn't detract from our weekend!

We will be back.

Great location to tour the area

  • 4 of 5

Nice location and great view of mountains from back deck. Easy to find and private drive with lots of yard for roaming around or letting the dog play. The kitchen is furnished with most staples, so don't pack unnecessarily! The queen bedroom mattress is not so comfortable, but maybe time to replace? Our only complaint is that there was so much kitchen stuff on the counters that we didn't have enough counter space to work with, but we made it work by putting our things on one end of the table.

I think, for a rental it would be better to have less furnishings (but that's just me). Then house was clean and well designed. Just FYI; there is no door on the master upstairs if that's important to you. We all went to bed at the same time, so it was fine.
