The beach in front of our villa, 4304 Ocean Club (“Chez Circe”), has moved closer to us recently so the walk to the water is now one of the shortest in Wild Dunes, about 200 yards, I think. This is great news for our guests who are beach-goers and swimmers! (But for golfers like us who loved the old 18th hole of the Links Course as a par 5, not so much. It is now a (hard) par 3.)
The palm trees that once surrounded the green of the signature 18th hole (Photo # 6) now protect what has become an impromptu venue for Beach Bocce Ball and pickup games of touch. Like Janus, Photos 7 and 8 look in two directions, one at our building (Building 4) and the other at the beach, shown in all these photos at full high tide on Memorial Day, 2015.
The Ocean Club (in which our villa is located) is the premier condo complex in the up-market gated community of Wild Dunes, located a short drive north and east of Charleston, SC. Wild Dunes is a beach, golf, and tennis resort and haven for many full time residents.
A highly respected property management company here gives our villa, 4304 Ocean Club (“Chez Circe”) their highest rating, “platinum”, their only platinum ranking in the Ocean Club complex.
But despite the deluxe decor, expensive furnishings and the original art, our guests tell us that they find our villa comfortable, cozy, and “family friendly”. And they tell us that the view from our third floor balcony of the beach and of the Atlantic Ocean…. that view, they say, is “astonishing”. The unit is laid out so that its living room, the master bedroom, and the balcony all share the ocean views.
A short walk on the boardwalk from our building past Ocean Club’s private saltwater swimming pool and hot tub/spa leads to a gently sloping, uncrowned and unspoiled three quarters of a mile stretch of beach that welcomes swimmers, beachcombers, bicycle riders, boogie boarders, readers relaxing, and generations of young dreamers who build castles in the sand. The sandcastles always vanish overnight, but happy memories become part of who we are.
Late in the afternoon it’s time to leave the beach to repair to the Chez Circe balcony for refreshments, and to review the seashells found, or the ride when the boogie board caught the wave just right, or to discuss the meaning of the half-read chapter of a beach book. Then the last sunlight of the day sparkles like crimson diamonds in the sea, and the ancient murmur of the Atlantic sings its soothing, peaceful lullaby. True, sometimes Nature pouts and cries big drops of rain and makes angry, crashing noises. And then the spectacle from the balcony is even more wonderful and awesome.
When the sun sets, and it’s time to come in for dinner, have no regrets. The day will end well, for appointments in the living room include Tommy Bahama furnishings and fabrics, original art, a 60 inch Sharp Aquos TV and a top of the line Sony sound bar.
The Open Plan Kitchen is well stocked with all the implements needed to prepare a quick sandwich or a gourmet feast (plus a phone for making reservations). Appliances include a Sub Zero paneled side by side refrigerator, a Dacor glass top Range with a convection and conventional oven, a built in Dacor Microwave, Bosch Dishwasher, Scottsman Ice Maker and a generous supply of china, glassware, and cutlery. The laundry is outfitted with a top-of-the-line Maytag Washer and Dryer with digital controls.
Long distance phone service for the United States and Canada is provided free. Password protected High Speed Wireless Internet Access is also free. There are telephones in the living room, kitchen, and in all three bedrooms. The unit is heated and cooled by a state of the art Carrier High Efficiency Two Stage Heat Pump.
The Master Suite's extra comfortable king bed is equipped with fine linens and bedding. The large sliding door that leads from the master bedroom to the Balcony has decorator window treatments. Hidden in the chest-on-chest there is a 42 inch Sharp Aquos Television with DVD. A large dressing room adjoins the master bedroom, accessible from the bathroom area.
The Master Bath has a granite counter top with dual sinks, Italian stone floors in warm colors, a large Jacuzzi Tub, and a dual head walk-in shower (large enough for two adults) with Delta Shower heads and dual Delta Auxiliary Horizontal Water Jets. The lip that defines the shower is only 3 inches high, which makes access easy for a person with limited mobility.
Each Guest Room has custom bedding and window treatments, plus tiled baths with upgraded linens.
In Guest Room 1 (“The Islands Bedroom”) there is a comfortable Queen Bed and a 42 inch Vizio TV with a Sony DVD. Its bathroom has a shower – tub combination.
Guest Room 2 (“The Room of the Sailors”) has both a comfortable Queen Bed and Twin Bunk Beds. Its bathroom also has a shower – tub combination.
The Ocean Club Villas is located at the northern (easterly) end of the Wild Dunes community. Entrance to the Wild Dunes community is through a Security Gate that is staffed 24 hours a day. The entrance to the Ocean Club Villas complex is protected by a second Security Gate, staffed during daytime hours and accessible by a keypad with a security code at other times. Access to the Ocean Club Pool Area and spa – hot tub is by a keypad with a security code.
The large Ocean Club saltwater pool, poolside hot tub/spa, and poolside barbecue areas are about 150 feet from the condo. For cookouts by the pool, there are large charcoal grills, as well as a preparation bar and large tiled sink area. From the pool area, a walk on an elevated boardwalk leads to the Beach. Two elevators serve 4304, each no more than 100 feet from our villa's door.
My wife and I call this special castle-by-the-sea “Chez Circe”, Circe’s home. (Circe was that irresistible Greek goddess who almost made Odysseus forget that he was very late for dinner, years and years late, in fact. “Circe” is also a pun on “Sur Sea” (by or on the sea). And “surcie” is a southern vernacular term for “an unexpected but welcome little gift”. For us, time spent Chez Circe is all three.)
We hope you will choose to enjoy a “week out of time” at Chez Circe this summer or this fall. (Please check the calendar for availability.) And we hope that the warmth of your summer memories will sustain you, and those you love, long after you have returned home from this special “surcie”, a place of play, and fun, and joy.

Charlie and Sheila,
We can't thank you enough for a perfect vacation! We have been trying for several years to get all of our kids (and 2-year-old grand baby) to get together for a family vacation and it finally happened. I'm still pinching myself, making sure it wasn't just a dream! Chez Circe was absolutely perfect for our family. EVERYTHING about the condo is first class. The rooms are spacious and so comfortable. We especially loved the porch overlooking the beach! I also appreciated all of the communication with you, Charlie; it truly made us feel that you were opening up your home to us. We thought we would go into Charleston and the area more but we found it hard to leave the serenity of the condo, the beach, and the pool. We can't wait to go back!
Dear Charlie and Sheila,
Thank you for allowing us to rent your very spacious, spotless, and beautifully-accommodated condo. We felt so much at home that we had a hard time leaving. A week was hardly enough time to see and experience all. However, all that we did do, came from your excellent suggestions found in the condo-notebook. Your directions and attention to detail have far surpassed anything we had seen before. You also readily returned calls regarding our concerns. That was much appreciated.
Our most favorite routine was each and every morning we would walk the beautiful beach and return home to have our coffee on a very spacious deck. (We might add that your deck is much larger than it appeared in the photo) We hope that we will be able to return to "Chez Circe" sometime soon.
Take good care and God bless,
Tina, MaryAnn, Norma, and Sharon
Our family of four has a new favorite place at the beach. We have been going to Wild Dunes for many years, but Chez Circe is our new favorite condo. The location is fantastic as we love to be away from the more populated parts of the beach (although we have never found Wild Dunes to be crowded). It was a blessing to be able to easily walk to the end of the island and around to the marsh side every morning at sunrise. We were thrilled to have a new experience every single morning. Two mornings we experienced dolphins surfacing just 10-15 feet from where we were standing on the shore. The pool area is fantastic. . . never crowded and plenty of options for shade or sun. There is also a wonderful area with grills and tables. Having restrooms available in the pool area enabled us to stay for a while after checkout and still be able to get cleaned up and dressed for our trip home. A note to non-golfers. . . we too are non-golfers and were completely at home in the midst of the golfing community.
I could go on and on about the outside area. . . but the inside of the condo really set the stage for the whole trip. It is lovely and very comfortable. It is appointed such that one really feels like a special guest in a home rather than a renter. If there were more than 5 stars available for the rating, we would give it more! We are looking forward to returning!
My family has stayed in here for several years and will keep coming back. Condo is wonderful, beach is very private and location within Wild Dunes is great! The beach, which has suffered the effects of erosion, is now back in its prime--short walk, lots of room at both low and high tide. Can't til next year!
Charlie and Sheila,
Thank you again for sharing your beautiful condo, our girl’s trip was magnificent as always. I believe this was our 4th or 5th time to stay in Chez Circe, I cannot begin to convey the level of amenities that are provided within this condo, location, and resort. We have used VRBO numerous times, this by far is one of the top rated 5 star condos we have rented. We always feel like family, thank you.
One detail I would like to highlight during this past May’s trip, the new extended beach view and play area. The sandbags have finally been removed from the beach, in addition to expanding the beach area directly in front of the condo. We now have amazing room to fly kites directly in front of the condo, play ball, just fun in the sun. We thoroughly enjoyed the new beach expansion directly within feet from your condo.
We look forward to our annual trip next May.
Thank you so much Charlie and Sheila, you made our trip a true slice of heaven.
Loved our week at Chez Circe. Perfect location and accommodations that clearly show the pride the owners take in their beautiful home. Charlie and Sheila's recommendations were excellent - the Eco-tour is a must - we tried the blue crabbing expedition and it was great fun. Thank you for sharing your home with us - can't wait to return!
Wild Dunes is a gated community with private homes, condominiums, and the Wild Dunes Resort on the Isle of Palms about 30 minutes drive from Charleston, SC. A modern causeway (The Connector) links IOP with the mainland (Mount Pleasant, SC) and MP's full service shopping centers including national retailers plus myriad restaurants, bars, etc.
But our villa, with its ocean views and an unspoiled stretch of beach, might as well be on a Caribbean Island, except for all the benefits that being near Charleston, SC affords. Some of our favorites include visits to Middleton Place Plantation and its gardens, Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island just south of IOP, Fort Sumter in Charleston's harbor (the place where the American Civil War began), the H. L. Hunley restoration, the first underwater craft ever to sink a naval vessel in combat, and so much more.
And, of course, there is Charleston, SC itself, "the Holy City", so named because of all of the churches that dot the city. In the last 20 years the city has sprouted good restaurants like freckles on on a red-haired kid's cheeks, but despite having been "discovered", it has still managed to retain its charm. After the Civil War (the shot that started the War was fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor) the city was saved from Victorian and subsequent "modernizations" because until the early 1960s, as residents say, "We were too poor to paint and too proud to whitewash."
But that was yesterday. The Southern Hospitality for which "the Holy City" has long been famous remains, but prosperity has brought modern, upscale hotels and retail. And the new Boeing plant at the Charleston Airport where Boeing builds the 787 Dreamliner has brought seven thousand five hundred new high tech jobs, along with a large number of supplier businesses and high tech startups.
Charleston has long been a college town with The College of Charleston (1770), the Medical University of South Carolina (1824), , The Citadel (1842), Charleston Southern, Trident Tech, (to mention just a few). MUSC is a "Magnet" teaching hospital with 596 beds and is home to the the Hollings Cancer Center. Next door to MUSC is the Roper St Francis Hospital, also highly regarded.
As you might except, having so many young college students so close to downtown means that there is an active nightlife, and the bar and restaurants have spread north along King Street, with new ones popping up almost weekly. Some people are very fond of 6th Street in Austin, TX, but for my money, King Street in Charleston is more vital, has more depth, is a good deal more interesting, and has no bats. (Don't take my word for it. See for yourself.)
But there's plenty to do and plenty to eat and drink closer to home on IOP, Sullivan's Island, and in Mount Pleasant.
If you stay on the Isle of Palms, the IOP Marina is a five minute drive from the villa, with its Eco tours, kayak and boat rentals, etc. And any number of outfitters fish the marsh between IOP and the mainland for spot tail and other saltwater species, both on a fly and with spinning gear.
There are some fine restaurants on IOP and on Sullivan's Island just to the south/east of us, and Mount Pleasant (just across The Connector causeway from IOP) has bunches, including but by no means limited to, the familiar chains.
(We provide a "Briefing Book" for our guests with suggestions of the things Sheila and I like to do best, and the places where we most like to eat and drink, when we are in residence.)
The long and short of it is, if your week at "Chez Circe", 4304 Ocean Club, lasted 30 days instead of seven, there would still be many things you regretted not having time to do.
