***Pets Cannot Be Left Alone At The Cabin and Must Be Supervised At All Times.***
Bird watchers will love this cabin where Hummingbirds, Chickadees, Steller’s Jays, Grosbeaks, Nuthatches, Bald and Golden Eagles, and Red-Tailed Hawks abound. Wild animals such as white-tailed deer, elk, big horn sheep, and bears may be seen on their way to drink at the river. Caution should always be taken staying in the wild, wooded mountain areas and always watch your children and pets.
Star-gazing while watching the Milky Way, meteor showers, and other heavenly bodies here are exciting since the sky is so clear and the cabin is away from the big city lights that block the sky. Bring your telescope and/or binoculars for day and night use. The full Moon will astound you!
Staying at the Caretaker’s Cabin will give you a treasure chest full of memories that will entice you to return year after year.

Why Jim and Nancy Kendrick chose Ridgway
We chose to build the Caretaker's Cabin because we love the land, river and mountains here and we own a home and 5 acres right next door across the creek. It is so beautiful and has a hillside to the north that is covered in lupine flowers with delightful perfume every May and June. We offer this cabin to people to enjoy the quiet tranquility of nature in this special spot. We feel the seclusion, quiet and privacy of the area should appeal to people who want to 'get away from it all.' It is the only piece of property in Ouray County that is truly on the river out of town for rent.
What makes this Cabin unique
The Caretaker's Cabin is unique because it is right on the Uncompahgre River and the seclusion and privacy allows one to meditate, be at peace and one with nature without being too far removed. There is still TV and news, but no phones unless you bring your cell phone. With the peace and quiet there are many species of birds and animals that pass through the property. The picture postcard views of the river and mountains are great for artists and photographers alike. The Ute Indians used to come here to summer along the Uncompahgre River and believed in its healing properties. Just south of the cabin is the Dallas trailhead for hiking up into the mountains. From Ouray there are many other hiking trails. Be advised that our trails start at around 7,800 ft and many go as high as 14,000 ft. In Ouray, you can rent a jeep or take a jeep tour, go to the hot springs pool, walk around town to see the historic mining homes, or go to the historic mining museum. There are many places to shop and eat. Ten miles north of Ouray is Ridgway, CO, where you can eat and shop, too. Head a little west along Highway 62 and at the Dallas Divide you can see the panoramic view of the magnificent 14,000 ft. Sneffels Range of the San Juan Mountains.

This is just what we were looking for. It felt like we were miles from anywhere even though Ouray is only about 10 minutes away. We chose to explore every day driving around the Skyway, but if I did it again I'd just sit on the deck and listen to the river. It was a very comfortable place, clean, with everything we needed. There was even a horse that came by every day and hung out at the base of the stairs. We really enjoyed this place.
Very nice, private home
We really enjoyed the cabin. It was a bit of a challenge with the trailer but we surely managed. Beautiful property and would be booked again if and when I come back. Everything was in order and well supplied. Thanks for sharing your place with us
Private and close to town
My husband and I, plus our dog, chose the Caretaker's Cabin as our base for six nights to enjoy the Ouray/Silverton area. The cabin is perched right above the Uncompahgre River and we loved hearing the rushing waters as we drifted off to sleep. There is even a little trail off the driveway that leads to the river bank. However -- the main road is right across the river and while you cannot see any vehicles, you can hear the traffic noises from the porch - not awful, but a reminder you're still in town. The cabin itself is simply furnished with adequate pots, pans and utensils for cooking and BBQ; the bed was comfy, with lots of extra blankets and pillows available. We were checked in and taken care of by Linda, who was an exceptional surrogate host. Because we had no phone service in Ouray (and it appears many visitors have the same issue), plus no wi-fi at the cabin, Linda bought and left a cell phone for use during our stay. While it's nice to get away from it all, it's also reassuring to have some method of communication in case of an emergency, or to call into town. The cell is now a new feature of the cabin. Thanks! In summary, a relaxing and fun place to stay in a convenient location, and I do recommend!
Thank you for your review.
Charming cabin in the woods next to the Uncompaghre River
If you like seclusion and the sound of rushing water this place is perfect. The cabin has all the amenities one needs and is in a very peaceful wooded environment. We so enjoyed the front porch where we ate all of our meals and chilled out on the lounge chairs while basking in the surrounding beauty. The cabin is conveniently located for so many activities including hiking, jeeping, dining etc. Although we did not get to meet Nancy and Jim, Linda guided us to the cabin and answered all our questions throughout our stay. Would strongly recommend this cabin for anyone who wants to get away and experience the most awesome mountain scenery in Colorado.
Jim and I are so glad you liked Linda and our cabin.
Hope you come again,
Secluded Cabin by the river.
Nice secluded cabin in the woods near the river just outside of Ouray. Great place to relax and enjoy some solitude. I would definitely recommend.
