Footprint on the Marsh has become a cherished retreat for our family. It is always a quiet and laid back atmosphere where you can relax and spend quality time with loved ones. Our neighbors on both sides are year-round residents so you never have to worry about loud house parties. The interior of our home is an open floor plan with 2 story ceilings with lots of windows letting in the sun, and making it bright and cheery. The kitchen is open to the great room so no one ever feels left out while working in the kitchen. There is also a lot of kitchen counter space so several people can help with food prep.
The outdoor areas of our home are our favorites. The porches and sundeck on the front of our home overlook the marsh and are great places to enjoy both day and night. The sundeck is great for sunbathing during the day; the covered porches are great places to enjoy being outdoors without sun exposure. With the table and chairs on the upper porch you can enjoy meals and/or lounging with a few drinks while watching the sun set over the marsh in the evenings. The sundeck is also a great place to stargaze at night!
The deck on the back of the house overlooks the canal. We have 4 large rocking chairs there and enjoy watching birds 'fishing' in the canal. The ground level patio is right at the canal and has a picnic bench; great for waterfront dining.
Our floating dock on the canal is a great place to do a little fishing and/or crabbing. The dock will accommodate up to a 28 ft. boat.

We're an extended family, consisting of our mother, two grown brothers, our wives and our children. My wife, Melissa manages the beach house for our family. We've owned a number of homes on Holden Beach over the years and so our children have grown up enjoying many trips here. The kids (all girls) are all recent college graduates now, but have loved Holden Beach no matter what their age. Our family enjoys trips to Holden Beach year round. The girls and now their significant others, prefer the warm spring and summer months and prefer stay in or by the water the majority of the time. Over the years we've appreciated how safe Holden Beach is; when the girls were young, pre-teens, it was such a great feeling being able to allow them to walk or ride bikes by themselves to buy ice cream or explore the island. In past years our parents always enjoyed the quiet, no crowds off season and many years would spend several of the off season months enjoying the slow pace and often times warm temperatures and sunshine. My brother and I and our wives also enjoy it year-round. When the water is too cool to play in, we get out the boat and go fishing,.... and/or there's always golf for us guys, and thrift & antique store shopping for our wives!
Melissa purchased this House in 2000
Why Melissa chose Holden Beach
When our family was first interested in purchasing a beach vacation home 24 years ago, Holden Beach was recommended to us by several friends. We decided to spend a weekend there; after that trip, we were hooked. It's more than just a great beach; the island itself is a great escape from the 'real world' with very little commercial development, no hotels, resorts or large or high-rise condos. While there have been many more homes built on the island since we first found Holden Beach twenty-two years ago, the island has not lost the feeling of being an 'escape', the lifestyle is still slow-pace and the island still has a lot of natural areas to enjoy. Besides the great beaches, there are two great inlets at each end of the island where you can fish, hike, sunbathe, etc., several large marshes throughout the island with lots of wildlife, and other beautiful natural areas full of wildlife on the island best gotten to by boat or kayak.
What makes this House unique
Over the years we've owned several different homes on the island, this our present home is our favorite as for us it has it all.... a short walk to the beach, a canal with our own private dock for quick boat (or kayak) access to the ICW (Inter Coastal Waterway), awesome views of the marsh (especially at sunset!)from 2 porches and a sundeck, and a short walk to the end of our street to a town park area for picnics, fishing, etc. overlooking the ICW. There's also a nice hiking trail off our street between the marsh and the ICW. Additionally, our street is a great place for the family to ride bikes, it is a very quiet, safe street.

We enjoyed our fall get away. Our son and other youth from church were at Fort Caswell for a teen fall retreat, so the parents took advantage of a retreat also. We met up with the youth for Sunday morning worship service and then went to eat at South Port (Fishy Fishy, a restaurant on the water). This was the first time we rented on a canal and took the boat. Although fishing was not successful the fun was. The lay out of the house was wonderful, very functional with an open floor plan. Nice view of the marsh and only a short walk to the beach. We spent time on the beach, walking to the pier, playing cards and board games and cooking (and watching football of course). Melissa is very very nice and easy to work with. We have always loved the Holden Beach, South Port, Oak Island area. Great place for a vacation with family and friends without all the tourist traps.
Being beach lovers, the easy access to the ocean was a HUGE selling point for the house. This was our first time to Holden Beach and we are so glad we came!
The sand at the beach is delightful...super soft, white sand, with still lots of shells to be found. The beach was never crowded and super family friendly. We had great luck fishing from the beach, wonderful waves for boogie boards, and the water was pleasantly warm all week. There is a general store just up from the house where you can get bait and other basic needs, super convenient. The neighborhood for this house was really quiet, neighbors very friendly.
We are boaters so having the house on the canal was a BIG selling feature. It is super tidal there so be aware of that. We would not have been about to launch or dock at low tide with our boat but that was not a problem. We have a 23 foot Sea Doo Wake Edition so with the jet engines we only need about 18 inches to float but that risks sucking up mud running. For us, it was under 2 feet at the dock edge. But a few hours on either side of low tide was fine. There are great restaurants on the water on the Intracoastal...we went north one day up to top end of Oak Island and another day we went south all the way into northern Myrtle Beach...great cruising water!
The town of Holden Beach has some great local shops, a Food Lion, and some restaurants. If you need anything closer or bigger like a Wal-Mart there is one only 20 minutes away...they also have a movie theater near the Wal-Mart we went to one night...easy drive. The funnest part for our kids was driving over the bridge that spans the Intracoastal...crazy high! The best feature of the house though is the deck overlooking the marsh...seeing the sun set there and the week were there Jupiter was shining bright in the early night sky...amazing views!
The house is super comfortable, clean, well kept, kitchen well stocked...just as advertised. That's not always the case but it certainly was here...so appreciate the owners working so hard to make other people's vacations memorable! They were easy to contact, super knowledgeable about the area, responsive and timely with booking and such! This house is an amazing value...don't miss out!
We appreciate your kind comments, and thank you for taking the time to write such a nice review of our beach home. We are especially thrilled you all enjoyed your stay at our home, and wonderful Holden Beach! We too think the upper deck on our house, overlooking the marsh, is a most wonderful place to watch amazing sunsets, wildlife, and is spectacular for stargazing year-round! I'm so glad you found the house clean, comfortable, and the kitchen well-equipped. That's what we strive for! For our guests,(and also for myself, I cook large family Thanksgiving dinners there) I try to outfit the beach house kitchen as complete as most people's home kitchen. I once had a guest call me laughing, she couldn't believe that not only did I have both rectangular and round cake pans at the beach house, I also have a bundt cake pan! She told me that she and her sister loved to bake together when they were kids, and since we had all types of bakeware, etc. at the beach house, they were planning to bake together during their vacation. I bet they had very happy family members at the house that week!
We so regret that you felt the canal and access at our dock was tidal. We were surprised to hear that, as it's never been our experience, nor have we heard that from others using our dock or our community's canals. After receiving your email, I took your concerns to our canal community's homeowners' association, mostly year-round residents who use the canals all the time, and they assured me that the canals since the re-dredging, 1.5 years ago, are, at both low and high tides, accessible to even the largest boat in our community, our next-door neighbor's 42 foot "yacht". To be sure we didn't have a problem specifically at/under our dock, we've had the company that services our dock come out to examine it at low tide. They found the water levels and dock space at low tide to still be quite sufficient for the largest boat we have use our dock, a 32 foot fishing boat, which repeat renters bring each Fall. We appreciate you letting us know your findings, and we will certainly examine our dock area more closely at low tide when we are there; we have also asked our care-taker to examine the dock area/water levels when he is there every other week. Our year-round neighbors are also good at letting us know if they notice any problems or changes around our property/dock.
Thanks again for your kind review, we hope you all will return to Holden Beach and stay at our beach home again!
Loved it, would rent again!
We typically rent homes on Oak Island, and this was our first Holden Beach rental. My wife, her three sisters, my son, and I all loved it, and would readily rent it again. This is one of the best values we have found.
Although not ocean front, public access to the beach is only a short walk or bike ride away (bike racks are provided at the public access). We actually didn't go to the beach as much as we thought we would, but only because of the beautiful, peaceful views from both the front and back decks. During the day one deck is in the sun while the other is in the shade, so you can work on your tan or relax in the shade, whichever you prefer. During our time there a gentle breeze was blowing over both decks.
The kitchen is well-equipped and able to accomodate multiple cooks simultaneously. Counter space is abundant for both prepping and serving, and cabinet space is plentiful. There are chairs at the bar and a large dining table is also provided.
The master suite is spacious and comfortable, and has direct access to the back deck (canal side). The other rooms on the lower floor have ample space and direct access to a shared bathroom.
The loft is convenient and comfortable, and has direct access to the front upper deck (including the tanning deck). It offers little privacy and there is no upstairs bathroom, but it is still very comfortable and served our purposes well.
The floating dock offers convenient access to the canal. We took full advantage by taking several kayak trips out to the waterway. We fished from both the dock and from the kayak, but unfortunately with little success. Based on several conversations at the tackle shop, the poor fishing appeared to widespread, and caused by heavy rainfall from the tropical storm that hit a few days prior to our stay. Hopefully your luck will be better!
The owner, Melissa, is very responsive, friendly, and helpful. She is very quick to respond to emails, and is also receptive to texts and phone calls.
Holden Beach is a very quiet and peaceful community. If you're planning wild beach parties, this is neither the house nor the beach for you. But if you want a peaceful beach retreat with plenty of fun, fishing, and family activities available, look no further than "Footprints on the Marsh."
Nice family house
We just booked a week for this summer and wanted to share our experience last summer!
This time we stayed with another family- 4 adults and 3 kids. My previous stay was a girl's retreat- the house was nice for both groups. The kitchen is great- we steamed shrimp, made cakes, and enjoyed the charcoal grill in the backyard too. The sunsets are really nice over the marsh and we played games in the backyard. The living room is spacious and good for hanging out if a sudden storm kicks you off the beach.
It is a short walk to the beach and the cart is nice for hauling kid's toys, and the street is really quiet.
Melissa was really nice to work with too and knows a lot about where to get great produce and fish.
We have stayed in many houses over the years at Holden. We stayed in this home with another couple for our 25th wedding anniversary. It was extremely clean and cozy. The kitchen was more than fully equipped. Our mornings started with coffee on the front deck looking over the marsh. We cooked every meal. Watched dolphins swim in canal and a few neighbors too. Melissa was great to work with. We will be renting again hopefully next year.
Foot prints on the marsh
Great place to stay. Peaceful but very friendly folks on street. Enjoyed the walks down to intercostal waterway.
fishing and crabbing on our own canal dock, and throughout the island.... ocean, ICW, and inlets.
