Located on the private south end of Great Guana Cay, this quaint traditional Bahamian style house sits high on a ridge with constant breezes and commanding view of both the Sea of Abaco and the Atlantic Ocean. Decks surround the house on all sides. There is a large open deck with teak table & 4 chairs and umbrella, 2 lounge chairs for sunbathing, outdoor shower and 2 rocking chairs for taking in the view and a screened in porch for indoor/outdoor living including a large dining table seating for 8.
The cottage sleeps 4 comfortably with 1 king bed that can be split into 2 twins in one bedroom and 1 double and 1 twin in the second bedroom. Air conditioning and fans are in each bedroom and the main living area. Looking around the cottage you will notice a nautical motif with beautiful carpentry details such as mahogany trim around all the doors and windows and mahogany counter tops in the kitchen and bathroom. The house is furnished with several custom made pieces of furniture and decorated with batiks from Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
A community dock is steps from the cottage where you can tie up your rental boat should you decide to rent one. A boat ramp is available for launching kayaks and small boats. Just a 5 minute walk away on the Atlantic Ocean is a beautiful semi private white sand beach. The 3rd largest barrier reef in the world is just 100 yards from the beach with spectacular snorkeling. We offer boogie boards for surf conditions when the wind picks up and bicycles. Kayaks and motor boats are available for rent on the island.
The cottage is equipped with satellite Direct TV, Sirrus Radio, iPod dock, DVD player and library, CD, WiFi and a VHF radio. Lots of books and magazines
Phone service is available via Skype if you bring your computer. Otherwise you can call home free from Nippers in the settlement while enjoying a frozen Nipper overlooking one of the best views in the Bahamas. My husband is a very talented carpenter. Using his skills we decided to build our dream retirement home on Guana Cay. My parents had a second home in Marsh Harbour where we spent many of our family vacations. It was a dream for a child like myself fascinated with this subtropical environment. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to return to this beautiful part of the world.
Bruce and Deb Lenahan purchased this cottage in 2008
After looking long and hard around the Abacos, we choose to build on the south end of Great Guana Cay because for many reasons. The Abacos and Great Guana Cay are a boater & fisherman's delight and is what attracted us to this part of the world. There are so many islands to explore. Just from our end of Guana you can kayak down to Scotland Cay where there is one of the most beautiful tropical beaches in the Bahamas while exploring a couple of uninhabited islands on the way. We also appreciated the beauty of this undeveloped part of the island and yet be in the settlement in 5 minutes by golf cart.
There are only 15 houses on this end of the island and it gives you the feeling you are in a special part of the world when you leave the pavement behind and jump on the sandy roads of the south end. I find it remarkable that if the wind is blowing from one side of the island you can retreat to the calm waters of the other side. Yet there is always a breeze at Gumbo Limbo. We appreciate that the conveniences of the settlement when we long for civilization is only 5 minutes away.
My husband and I stayed at Gumbo Limbo for an all too short week in April. The cottage, even more lovely than pictured, is beautifully built and maintained. All the comforts of home are provided including a very well equipped kitchen. We had a fabulous week, cooked in most nights and snorkeled from the nearby beaches each day. The snorkeling was lovely with beautiful fan coral, many fish and an occasional turtle seen. The caretaker Sally Ann was wonderful and helped us with many aspects of our stay. The cottage feels very secluded and we saw few people on the beach. Everyone was very friendly and we loved meeting the local neighbors. Golf cart travel to and from town was pretty fun and easy. We would love to return one day to this beautiful spot. It was truly one of our favorite vacation homes and locations of all our past travels.
We stayed in Gumbo Limbo for nine beautiful days, this well appointed house is scenically located with 360 degree views of the Atlantic as well as the Sea of Abaco. Well ventilated to easily access lovely tropical breezes, incredible woodwork throughout, it had every possible feature anyone could want or need. Great conscientious caretaker. I would highly recommend this amazing place.
Super place to get away from it all!
Lots to do in GGC if you like boating, fishing and the beach.
Gumbo Limbo is a super home away from home. Highly recommended. Absolutely need a golf cart.
We really enjoyed our stay. Such a beautiful house, very clean and plenty of room. Island was breathtaking and the locals were so nice. Would definitely do it again.
Loving our stay at "Gumbo Limbo"! Relaxing and laid back for those looking for relaxation, but who enjoy amenities like Wi-Fi, Sat./VHF radio and Direct TV. Island living at its best. Reluctant to give too positive a review as others will might consider this lovely retreat as a place to getaway. Beautiful furnishings, books to read and all the cookware/seasonings one needs to prepare any meal. Commanding view of the Sea of Abaco, Atlantic Ocean and Foots Cay. The Ocean and swaying curtains rock you to sleep at night. Words cannot describe this wonderful cottage.
Words cannot truly express how much we enjoyed our time at Gumbo Limbo! It was perfect for our family (mom, dad, son 7 daughter 4)! The home was built with great attention to detail, the kitchen had everything we could want for cooking and the boogie boards and beach umbrella were great additions! This is our 3rd time in the Abacos and this home had everything we could possibly want. This home is on the South end and provided us seclusion and wonderful space for the kids to go out and be kids. Already planning our next trip. Thank YOU very much for sharing your wonderful home with us!
