About the property

Farmhouse, 6 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 11-14)

Lavender Hill Farm is well known on Vashon Island for our U-Cut lavender stand and farm store, open from late June through early August. The property has 1500 lavender plants and more than 15 varieties, as well as beautiful gardens and stunning views. Come vacation in this tranquil setting in a 1930's farmhouse, thoughtfully updated and spacious enough for a reunion of friends and family. The long farmhouse porch is the perfect spot for morning coffee overlooking the gardens, fields, Quartermaster Harbor and Mount Rainier. Listen to the bees as you stroll through the fields and wander into the town of Burton, just a five minute walk, for supplies, coffee, and some browsing or a meal on the deck of the Quartermaster Inn. Inner and Outer Quartermaster Harbor is a short walk.

The house is light and bright, with nicely appointed guestrooms and three bathrooms for guests. The kitchen works for a crowd, with two ovens, a large center island, 6 burner cook top and large pantry - and there's a second fridge in the basement. The living room has two seating areas, there are two tables in the dining room and the long porch table seats twelve.

Enjoy the stars at night, the quiet, and spend your days biking, riding horses, kayaking or just finishing a book or writing one (wireless internet throughout the house). The island has a movie theatre, movie rental (and you've got cable as well) and many concerts, performances and gatherings to keep you as active as you like.

About Cathy MacNeal

Tom works as the head of a labor union local in Northern California and Cathy is an actor who also runs a non-profit providing education in Cambodia, where we adopted our two younger daughters. We also have a grown daughter and son. Tom is also a writer of slang books - we live in Berkeley, California during the school year and hope to retire to Vashon eventually. We have learned a lot about lavender in ten years and love our time on Vashon.

Cathy MacNeal purchased this farmhouse in 2006

Why Cathy MacNeal chose Puget Sound North

I've been visiting Vashon since 1994, when good friends moved here from Los Angeles. It's a very special place. Tom and I bought a small cottage in 2003 and fell in love with the lavender farm when we came to pick lavender. In 2006, we were lucky enough to buy it. We kept the previous owners' tradition of opening a U-Cut stand and farm store and have learned a lot about lavender. For three years, we participated in the lavender farm tour, a wonderful weekend with 2500 visitors coming to enjoy the lavender. Each year we run our lavender farm business from mid-June through July, with the rest of the year available for vacation rentals. We love our time on Vashon.

What makes this farmhouse unique

What do I love most about Lavender Hill Farm? The view is amazing - Mt. Rainier, the boats in the harbor, the lavender. We think of it as Maine and Provence rolled into one, with snow-capped mountains as a bonus. It's quiet and the stars shine bright. I love working with the lavender - very relaxing. The house is big - it's so cheerful and so many places to curl up with a book. There's room for a lot of guests and the porch is the perfect gathering place! I soak in the claw foot tub in the master bedroom and then sink into the king-size bed. Truly a vacation from our lives in the Bay Area - and no traffic! It's also so easy to get here. The airport is a 20 minute cab ride or 30 minute bus ride to the ferry, and the island bus comes to our corner (and sometimes right past the house). The island has good restaurants, an arts scene, pools, and lots of opportunities for biking and hiking.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Everything was absolutely wonderful! Our friends and family loved the Lavender House. One of my friends said she wants to organize her family reunion there next year!

Thank you for providing such a special place that is so homey but elegant.

Wonderful place, as usual.

This is year #5 for our group of five. We meet here once a year for several days, most recently for a writing workshop. We love the ambiance, the fabulous kitchen, comfortable rooms, and the view. We'll be reserving again right away for next year.

A large well-appointed home exudes peace and comfort, surrounded by gardens and view of the bay.

The peace of this home enveloped us from the first moment we walked in and continued to bless our Labor Day/wedding weekend. Janett, the local manager, was most gracious in responding to our needs and questions. We all appreciated the little details: the small lap blankets, the abundance of lavender, table linens, basic pantry items, comfortable beds, cozy towels.

The kitchen was wonderful for the cooking we needed to do. Three full ovens, two sinks, dishwasher and 2 refrigerators (One in the basement). There was plenty of room for a large gathering of family and friends for meals. All of the outdoor spaces were so welcoming: having tea at the tables on the terrace near the lavender, soaking up the sun sitting in the Adirondack chairs and reveling in the roses on the patio by the dining room. People gathered on the long porch chatting, bird watching, eating. There were apple and pear trees and berries. The bride and groom had lovely “first look” pictures in the yard below the porch. We saw sunrise every morning across the bay (those of us who were awake!).

General information about the area: Burton’s general store, just a walk down the hill, was helpful for last minute needs (wrapping paper, birthday cards…). The coffee stand had multiple brews and sweets, even gluten free cookies. The bus from Burton provided transport to the commuter water taxi for venturesome souls to visit downtown Seattle. Up the road toward Vashon Center: Minglements is a mix of locally made crafts and organic foods including gluten free staples. The Open Space for the Arts was a wonderful outdoor wedding venue with meadow and pines framing the site we used. Staff were most accomodating in setting up both outdoor and indoor options as well as an expansive reception area. On a clear day Mt Rainier can be seen from there.

**We did not have small children in our group, but it was clear that they would be welcome. There was a bedroom with books and DVD's that would interest the very young up to pre-teens. **

Serenity and sweetness!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for providing us with the ideal location on Vashon Island. The house was beautiful, light-filled and perfect for our family. We loved cooking together in the large, well-appointed kitchen and dining outside watching the sunset skies turn purple and pink. The views of the harbor, the gorgeous Mount Rainier and magnificent garden, grounded us. We never wanted to leave! Our grandchildren played in the yard and helped us pick fruit for our morning breakfast.

This trip was exactly what we needed and wanted. Our family has created new memories that we will always treasure!

Wonderful family reunion

  • 5 of 5

The property served our family well. We took turns making dinner and the kitchen is magnificent for many helpers. Every utinsil we needed is there. The house is as advertised, very well maintained and clean. The owners and caretakers are most helpful.

Lovely house with great support staff

  • 5 of 5

We recently got married at Lavender Hill Farm. We couldn't have picked a better venue, even with the iffy weather. We had planned a small outdoor wedding in the lavender garden but ended up having a more cozy indoor reception. It worked out beautifully and the staff was so nice and helpful on our big day. It also helped that the house was well stocked and taken care of. All our guests loved staying there and took advantage of the location by walking to the beach and enjoying the views.

Prior to our stay, the host, Cathy was always quick to reply to our questions and made sure we had everything we needed for a pleasant stay. Can't recommend enough. Thank you!

Wonderful family weekend!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent a terrific weekend at the Lavender Hill Farm. The house is fantastic and very well cared for. There are Mt Rainier views from the big picture window in the kitchen, as well as the living room and porch. We loved working in the kitchen! Lots of space for multiple cooks. Fabulous porch that was perfect for morning coffee, hanging out, lunch, drinks. Great place to be! The kids really enjoyed the yard. Our oldest is 6, and the walk to the beach was perfectly do-able. Cathy and Janette were very easy to work with and wanted all of us to enjoy ourselves. We had such a good time we have already booked this house for next year's reunion!!
