In 1759 this cottage in Sandwich, UK, was the home and shop of Thomas Paine, founding father of the United States and French Republic. He created the phrase 'United States of America', and was author of three of the bestsellers of the eighteenth century, including the cornerstone of American democracy, Common Sense plus the bible of English radicalism, the Rights of Man.
The cottage has been carefully restored and furnished with period items of furniture that enable the visitor to relax and enjoy a period atmosphere. The cottage is larger than the frontage would suggest having had a Victorian kitchen extension. There is a good sized living room with a reading area containing an excellent collection of revolutionary period literature and of course all of Paine's works. The stairs lead to a bedroom with two period single beds and a wonderful early Victorian dresser of mahogany, the upstairs rooms are wonderfully characterful with their beamed ceilings and walls and floors with extraordinary slopes on them. The next bedroom has a beautiful mahogany double bed from ~ 1870. The bathroom upstairs has both a shower and bath. There is a log fire in the living room and a good supply of logs are included in the rental fee. Parking is free of charge in the Guildhall car park a few minutes walk from the cottage. There is a south facing cottage garden for visitors to enjoy, its carefully tended and is a typical English cottage garden full of flowers during the summer months.

This is the best place to stay in Sandwich!
Being familiar with Sandwich, I knew this location was a few steps to the Market Square. The living room is filled with Thomas Paine collectibles. The house is very very old with slanted floors upstairs but a very modern kitchen. From there younstep out to a lovely mature walled garden. This is our third stay and I recommend it highly.
Our Favorite Stay Yet!
First, my husband and I are historical enthusiasts so this charming and quirky cottage was quite literally the best place we could have hoped for! Dr. Ward's arrival instructions were spot on, including where to park. Our first impressions? We could not get over how charming Thomas Paine's cottage was. Every appliance worked like new but maintained that antique charm. We appreciated both the books and the DVDs that were provided as well as the welcome beers. The house is perfect if you are looking for the most charming and historical cottage for an excellent value. The town of Sandwich is also one of our favorites we have visited. There were so many pubs, restaurants, and cafes to choose from we never even bothered cooking at the house which is a rare thing for us. There are several neat places to see nearby that we were never bored! This is definitely a place we will look to coming back to! Thank you for such keeping this delightful place so beautiful and warm and charming!
Characterful, comfortable cottage in the heart of Sandwich.
My husband and I stayed in this cottage for four nights in October 2016. Although it maintains its historical character it contains every comfort and modern convenience you could wish for. Toasty warm as well, with a very pretty English garden. We would love to return one day.
A lovely retreat in a cosy small town in Kent
This is a beautiful hideaway. We enjoyed every second of our stay, despite feeling cold and under the weather, this atmospheric cottage lifted our spirits. What a wonderful way to learn about Thomas Paine's peace activism and the incalculable effect it had on history.
The cottage was ideal and in the perfect location to explore historic Sandwich and the surrounding area. Cannot recommend highly enough.
Loved the historical feeling of the cottage and town. Robin thought of everything and was very helpful with our concerns.
Thomas Paine's cottage is located at the heart of the historic medieval town of Sandwich. Sandwich is the most complete medieval town in Britain and has the most complete street of timber frame buildings in Strand Street. The cottage is within a few hundred yards of a number of restaurants and inns as well as a range of shops. It is within 2 miles of 2 championship golf courses including the famous Royal St.Georges, there are excellent walks out to Sandwich Bay from the cottage. Canterbury is a 20 minute drive away and the cottage is a short walk to the railway station for high speed services to London. The cottage is well placed for day trips to France or Belgium by car since it is only a 15 minute drive to the cross channel ferries, return trips to Bologne or Bruges can readily be achieved in a day. Both Dover and Rams gate ports are within easy reach and provide a range of museums and castles such as Dover Castle. A number of tour companies offer tours out to visit the battlefields of WWI and WWII in France and Belgium and the cottage is well placed for this. East Kent provides some of the finest coastal walks in Britain taking in views of the iconic White Cliffs of Dover from the Saxon Shore Way.
