What makes this farmhouse unique

Over Easter we had a family get-together and had a lot of people spend the night. It was so much fun, we had a sing-a-long around the camp fire BBQ pit in the backyard, and the next morning a wonderful Easter breakfast for 40 people and egg hunt. Since Jan 2010 we have had 4 birthday parties and 6 other parties for my family and friends at the house - it was pure joy. It's great when you can all stay together and cook meals and have fun.

Nothing fancy, but loved the outdoor space!

  • 3 of 5

It was very hot while we were there, and the swamp coolers did not do a very good job of keeping up. It was quite warm in the bedrooms and cold in the kitchen. We had to move the coffee from under the vent to keep it warm. While the interior seemed a little cramped for the size of our group, we absolutely loved the outdoor space! The large canopy, fire pit and backyard area was wonderful for our family gathering - and the ample parking was definitely a huge bonus. Overall, for the money this was a great place for a get-together. If your family just wants a place to hang out and enjoy each other without the frills and expense, this house is a great choice.

Owner's Response: The Jolly House is fun not fancy. We do give our guests instructions on how to use the two swamp coolers. If they follow the instructions and do NOT open extra windows the house does stay cool enough for comfort. We did find extra open windows when these guests left. We have had some very unusual hot weather lately as well. Usually it doesn't go over 100. Please see our other guests reviews and you will see the swamp coolers usually work fine.

Wonderful Quirky Place: Perfect for Large Gatherings

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Jolly Tar Mines House for our parents 50th Anniversary Party weekend. It was perfect for our large and extended family and friends. To us the house was very comfortable and relaxing right away. We had about 20 people staying at the house and over 50 for the party. We never felt crowded. The decor and quirky things you'll discover are endless. I was finding and seeing new things up until we checked out. Would definitely return. The surrounding area has tons to do and the local restaurants, shops and markets were fantastic.

Great for rustic friend reunion

  • 3 of 5

The backyard was great for our children that range from 1 to 10 years old. It kept them entertained for a long weekend despite the heat. It was also nice to stay in one house all together for our 20th high school friend reunion with spouses and kids. There is great space in and outside for a large group over 20 and the kitchen was great too! There were plenty of dishes and cookware. We would not recommend staying there in the summer because of the swamp cooler's. If we had not brought 8 to 10 fans for the house, it would have been unbearable the first 2 nights.

Owner's Response: We have rented the Jolly House out for 7 years now and every summer we are fully book. We have only had one other complaint about the heat in the house, and that group was at the house during an extreme heat wave too. This group unfortunately arrive during one of the worst heat waves we have ever had, and temps did get to 110 degrees which is very unusually for the area. Please check the weather website and you will find most of the year Angels Camp has great weather even during the summer. We have both a large and a extra large swamp cooler, plus numerous fans throughout the house and the house usually stays cool enough for comfort. The house is very big and it was built over a 150 year period of time, to use regular air conditioners instead of the swamp coolers would raise the daily price by at least $100 a day, therefore we choose to use swamp coolers to keep our rates affordable. We are glad this group had a great time anyway.

Great stay with loads of space and character.

  • 4 of 5

My bridal party stayed here for our wedding weekend. The house was amazing and had plenty of space to accommodate our party. The location is great add it is situated right at the intersection of highway 4 so accessing our venue was a breeze. We are even talking about renting again to use for retreats and recording sessions for our musical band given the great acoustics and space for all of the band members mist of which were in the bridal party. We we'll definitely stay again and recommend to other groups.
